Julie James Comes to Los Angeles! (+Giveaway)

Posted May 1, 2017 by Rowena in Promotions | 11 Comments

The minute Holly and I found out that Julie James was coming to Los Angeles, we made plans to be there because if you know us…we love us some Julie James. Our love for Julie James was established in 2008 with the release of Just the Sexiest Man Alive. I adored that book to pieces. I adored it so much I forced Holly to read it, and have not missed a release of hers since. We’re just as much in love with her stuff now as we were then.

Friday night, Julie James was in town chatting with People Magazine’s Kara Warner at The Ripped Bodice in Culver City and our book nerd asses were over the moon. If you haven’t been, you really must make The Ripped Bodice, the only exclusively romance bookstore in America, a stop when you’re in LA. Sisters Leah and Bea have created funky, fun atmosphere where you can relax, browse new (and used!) books and be with like minded women who love romance as much as you do. Not to mention spend time with Fitzwilliam Waffles, the shop dog (https://www.instagram.com/fitzwilliamwaffles/). I live about 15 minutes away from The Ripped Bodice, but I don’t get out there nearly as much as I’d like. Which is a bummer, since they offer writing workshops, book signings and all manner of reader/writer events (check out their events page here to see what’s coming up).

It’s funny that we were much more excited about seeing Julie James than we were about People Magazine being in the house but well, I guess that’s not such a surprise considering our book nerd status. Having People Magazine there was just an added bonus.

Leah, Bea and their crew turned The Ripped Bodice into an awesome venue with a Chicago flair and we definitely appreciated their efforts (along with the refreshments, of course. :P). Julie James was welcomed with a good sized crowd. She regaled us with stories of her writing adventures, background on the books she’s written and her inspiration for The Thing About Love. She also took some questions from the audience, then signed some books. It was an all around fabulous book signing, even though my Dodger loving heart was a bit bummed that the Chicago Cubs game was playing in the background. Ha!  (H: Sometimes I don’t even know how we’re friends. CUBS 4EVER!!) If you have a chance to attend a Julie James signing, you really must. She’s a wonderful storyteller in person as well as in print. Holly and I enjoyed ourselves immensely.

To celebrate the event, we’re giving away a signed copy of Julie Jame’s The Thing about Love to one lucky winner. Please use the rafflecopter widget below. Good luck!!

Thanks to Julie James, Kara Warner of People Magazine and everyone at The Ripped Bodice for a fun night. It was one for the books and I will definitely be making more time to visit the best bookstore in the entire universe! 🙂

Julia Quinn’s Book Signing in Orange County (+Giveaway)

Posted April 5, 2016 by Rowena in Giveaways, Promotions | 14 Comments

Julia Quinn was in town this past weekend to promote her new release Because of Miss Bridgerton and I was in the area so I stopped by the book signing with my girls to see if we can find out the scoop on future books she’s planning but also to hear what Julia Quinn had to say about anything and everything in her writing world.

The signing was held at the Barnes & Noble in Huntington Beach, CA right next door to Cheesecake Factory. There was a good crowd that gathered to see Julia Quinn. All of the chairs that were set out for her had people in them and some B&N workers had to come back out with more chairs for the people standing in the back.

Right off the bat, she started up a question and answer session which for the most part was kept going by different members of the audience. She answered all sorts of questions from her new series, her old series and some writing and publishing questions as well.

Her latest series, The Rokesbys will be another quartet of books and will feature the four Rokesby brothers. We got George’s (the oldest brother and heir) book first but we can also expect books for Andrew, Edward and Nicholas (not in that order though).

Some other stuff that she mentioned while talking with the crowd are:

  • Lady Danbury probably won’t get her own story told because she’s on record in books talking about how her husband is an idiot. (Do we really want that story anyway? LOL)

  • Quinn has been inspired to write while reading books by other authors in her same genre. Authors like Judith McNaught, Julie Garwood, Jude Devereaux, Lisa Kleypas and Amanda Quick.

  • She has a lot of help keeping her facts and books straight from her readers. Within hours of books releasing, she hears from readers about things she got wrong. She appreciates all the help!

  • The epic pall mall matches in the Bridgerton books were inspired by the time she spent visiting her grandparents house. She had some pretty epic croquet matches with her sister and those memories are brought to life in her books.

  • No plans to switch over and start writing contemporary. She loves writing historical romances and challenges herself to keep things fresh by changing things up, by writing different kinds of historical romances.

The time zipped right by as I sat there and listened to Julia Quinn talk. She’s very charming and she’s also really funny. I got some goodies to giveaway on the blog and she was nice enough to sign them for me. It’s really cool when you go out and see authors who are celebrities to us readers and they know about your blog. I get a thrill out of that every single time I meet an author whose work I admire and you tell them you’re a book blogger and they say, “I know Book Binge!” I just love it!

All in all, I’m glad that I attended the book signing. Julia Quinn is a classy lady and I’m really looking forward to this new series that she’s working on. I enjoyed Because of Miss Bridgerton and you can read my review of that book here.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: I bought two paperback copies of Because of Miss Bridgerton to giveaway on the blog and they’re both signed by the lovely Julia Quinn. All you have to do use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. GOOD LUCK!

Nalini Singh Book Signing in LA. (+Giveaway)

Posted June 7, 2013 by Rowena in Giveaways | 16 Comments

Nalini Singh was in town for the launch of her new release to the Psy-Changeling series, Heart of Obsidian and I was thrilled to be able to have gone.

I went with my friend Tasha who is a huge Nalini fan and I think it’s safe to say that we had a good time.

We met for a quick bite to eat before the signing, where my friend Tasha met Renee (a guest reviewer here on Book Binge).  Introductions were made, food was eaten, books were discussed and then it was time to head down the street for the signing.

When we first got there, we did a happy dance in the parking lot because this was Tasha’s first book signing and we wanted to get into the spirit of things (like only we can).

I’ve only been inside the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore once before but I don’t remember it being as awesome as it was last night.  You walk into the cafe first and there are tables and cool chairs for people to hang out at.  The bookstore is right past the cafe and it’s spacious, with room to walk and loads of books on display.  It really is a delightful hangout for book lovers.  I will definitely be back.

There was quite the crowd already gathered when we got there but it wasn’t hard for us to find seats.  Within minutes after we got there, the seats filled up and then there was only standing room left.  The area designated for the signing was pretty big and once Nalini walked in, she got down to business.

She talked very briefly about the new book, Heart of Obsidian (asking first if spoilers were okay, which was met with loud NO’S all around) and then she opened up the floor to questions.

I can’t remember everything that was discussed but we had a lively group last night and Nalini was freaking adorable.  She answered as many questions as she could and a good time was had by all.

She did say that she’ll be announcing the new couple for her next book after her book tour was done so be on the look out for that.

She couldn’t get into much about Heart of Obsidian since she didn’t want to spoil the book for anyone but the buzz around the book signing last night from those that read it was that it’s good.  Real good. I know that Ames has already finished reading it and she enjoyed it a great deal so that’s good news there.

Here are the rest of the pictures from last night.  I didn’t take very many, sorry. =)

Me and Thuy from Nite Light Book Reviews

I made a new book friend on Twitter yesterday.  Thuy and I started chatting on Twitter before the signing and we agreed to meet up there.  It was so nice to meet another awesome book blogger because you can never have too many book blogger friends.  She’s given me loads of paranormal and urban fantasy books and series to try so my list has grown.  It was lovely to meet you Thuy and I will definitely see you around Southern California at other bookish events.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: To celebrate the release of Heart of Obsidian, we’re giving away a signed copy of the book away here on the blog.

Please Note: The bookstores would like to request that you purchase KISS OF SNOW at the signing. If you can’t wait for the event in your area to get your hands on Hawke (and who would blame you?!), then we ask that you please support the bookstore holding the signing by purchasing your copy from them. They’d be more than happy to pre-order the book for you so you can have it on the release date.

If you aren’t able to get to a signing, but would like Nalini to personalize a copy of the book for you, please let the store know beforehand so they know to order and keep aside a copy for you. Make sure you include the name you’d like it signed to.

Please also note that some stores may have rules that ask customers to bring only two books through the line at a time. Nalini is happy to stay until everyone has all of their books signed, but the store may request that after two books are signed, you get back in line again for the rest of your books.

All events are always subject to change. Please check this page regularly for the most updated information and feel free to confirm with the venue. Nalini is looking forward to meeting her readers and dishing about Hawke, Sienna and lots more!

I’m going to try to make the Roseville signing. Anyone else in NorCal? We could make an evening of it..maybe have dinner or drinks first?
