While the bartender makes change, I scan the crowd, trying to reconcile this scene with my life in Colebury. This place is full of happy, prosperous people enjoying craft brews and good company. Except for the flannel shirts and technical fabrics, I could almost be in New Yorkā€”but on a weeknight, when the crowds arenā€™t crushing. This bar is really pretty cool.

No, it isnā€™t, I remind myself. Vermont is a horrible place. I take a sip of my cider, and then notice how good it isā€”earthy and interesting, sweet and bitter and musky.

Itā€™s really too bad that I hate Vermont because this cider is flipping amazing.

These are my scattered thoughts as a second man appears behind the bar in my peripheral vision. He must have come through a back door somehow. I feel tingles on my scalp, because heā€™s watching me.

Slowly, I turn to face him. And holy shishkebab. Six-foot-three inches of my high school heartbreak is staring intently at me.

All my blood stops circulating. There stands the man who basically ripped the beating organ right out of my chest and stomped it with a motorcycle boot. I need to look away, but I almost canā€™t. My heart is pounding wildly inside my chest, and I feel the onset of a fight-or-flight response coming on.

Flight is sounding like a good option.

Yet, because Iā€™m a big idiot, I keep on staring. And he looks good. When did his shoulders get so wide? His eyes are just as beautiful as they always were, so dark and brooding.

From the nose down, heā€™s not the same, though. He isnā€™t the clean-shaven high school senior who once kissed me. This version of Benito has a scruffy beard. And his hair is a little too long.

It does nothing to dim his attractiveness, though. On the contrary, the mountain-man look suits him.

This is information that I never needed, by the way. I could have gone my whole life without knowing that he grew up as hot or hotter than he was at eighteen.

Back then, my whole world orbited around this man. Even now I feel my world tilt subtly in his direction. He has his own gravitational pull. And he looksā€¦devastated. For a split second I see hurt in his eyes when he looks at me. And then I blink and itā€™s gone. His face is impassive.

But heā€™s still staring at me.

Trying for casual, I lift the cider glass to my lips and take another sip. I study him.

ā€œSkylar.ā€

At the sound of his sexy rumble, my hand wobbles, and I actually spill a drop of cider on my wrist. Smooth, Skye.

He ducks under the bar, which puts him right beside me. I get a whiff of him, and it wrecks me all over again. Leather and pine needles. ā€œCome over here and talk to me,ā€ he says in a soft voice that brings out goosebumps all over my body. Then he takes my wrist in one large hand and leads me across the room.

Everything is happening too fast. His hand is wide and warm, and my brain is all swimmy. If only I could go meditate for a half hour somewhere, to clear my head. But who am I kidding? A prepaid week at a yoga spa wouldnā€™t be enough to restore my equilibrium right now.

Benito nudges me toward a booth, where I sit down hastily, tucking my duffel bag against the wall and setting my drink on the table. Iā€™m breathing too quickly as Benito shrugs off his leather jacket and tosses it onto the opposing seat.

I have no choice but to look up. The first thing I see when I lift my chin is his black T-shirt. It hugs an impressive set of abs. I lift my gaze slowly, taking in a chest far more sculpted than even my fantasies and a muscular arm propped on the table.

Wow. He must have spent the last twelve years at the gym.

Then, when it can be avoided no longer, I look up into his face. And there it isā€”the cognac-colored gaze that had always regarded me softly. When we were friends, I looked into those big eyes a thousand times, and they never let me down.

Until the night when they did.

I’m really anxious for the release of this book so I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that we’ll get the book before the year is up. Wish me luck!

Damn. Charlie hadnā€™t been lying about the hot blonde.

The woman walking straight toward him was all tight jeans, high heels, and confidence. And hot. Very, very hot.

Charlie muttered something admiring under his breath, and Lukeā€™s gaze flicked to the man beside the woman. Tried to place him. Couldnā€™t.

Not too many guys around here who wore light-purple shirts and white pants with the same easy comfort that Lucky Hollow residents wore jeans and flannel.

No doubt about itā€”neither was from around here. Not by a long shot.

The man was a half step behind the woman, and Luke assessed that the woman was calling the shots.

His eyes narrowed as he realized that she hadnā€™t once wavered in her approach.

She knew what she was after:

Him.

She got closer and Luke saw that the face matched the body. Wide blue eyes, full lips, sassy shoulder-length blond hair that was just tousled enough to make a man wonder how it had gotten that wayā€”to want to be the one to muss it.

Her gaze flicked over him, and Charlie whistled and muttered under his breath. ā€œShe just checked you out, man.ā€

She had indeed, but Luke was far from flattered. It hadnā€™t been the assessment of a woman checking out a man so much as a predator evaluating its prey.

As though she was evaluating him for . . . something.

Blondie stopped in front of him, and the second her blue eyes locked on his, Luke felt a little jolt of awareness and was irrationally annoyed. It had been a long time since heā€™d been quite so aware of a woman.

Once, heā€™d enjoyed the feelingā€”sexual chemistry was almost the perfect combination of pain and pleasure. A subtle punch in the gut that you wanted to experience again and again.

These days, though, he was having a hard time getting past the pain part. The shitty parts had outweighed the good parts just one time too many. Now he mostly settled for casual hookups with a divorcƩe a few towns over who was even less interested in com-mitment than Luke was.

He had zero use for attraction to a pretty, bold woman in high heels.

Luke noticed that for a sheer moment she had a slightly off-balance look, as though she too had felt the annoying zip of arousal when their eyes met, but she recovered quick-ly.

Pasting a sunny, generic smile on her face, she stuck out her right hand. ā€œLuke Elliott. Iā€™m Jordan Carpenter. This is my colleague, Simon Nash.ā€

Good manners had him setting down his equipment and extending his own right hand toward hers even as his brain caught on her name. Familiar, and . . .

Shit. Shit!

He managed to stop from jerking his hand back, but just barely. Instead, he gritted his teeth, gave her hand a perfunctory shake, and then fixed her with a glare. ā€œYouā€™re wasting your time, Ms. Carpenter. And mine.ā€

Blue eyes narrowed. ā€œAha. So you did get my emails.ā€

Those. The voicemails. The letters.

ā€œSure,ā€ he said with a nod, shoving his hands in his pockets. ā€œJust like I suspect you got the message that I didnā€™t want to be a part of your show.ā€

Charlie looked from the woman to Luke and back again. ā€œShow?ā€

Ryan ambled over, his shit-eating grin telling Luke that this damn woman had already spilled the beans on why she was here. ā€œLukeā€™s gonna be a national heartthrob.ā€

ā€œInternational,ā€ said the blond guy in the purple shirt.

Jordan Carpenter didnā€™t look at her companion, but all three firefighters did.

The other man gave the sort of easy smile that probably had him making friends easily. Luke didnā€™t want a new friend.

Especially not one who wanted to use his shitty romantic past for the sake of TV ratings.
