Today bestselling author Deirdre Martin is here to celebrate the release of her latest hockey novel, Icebreaker.
CRUSHED by Deirdre Martin
I’m fortymmmm and I still get crushes.
My first was when I was five years old: Davy Jones of the Monkees. Those big brown eyes. That British accent. Of course, if I’d known he was only 4’3″, I might not have felt the same. But when you’re five, you don’t think about whether your idol is the same height as you.
Next up was George Harrison. He had the best Beatle hair and I thought he was deep. I actually credit George with launching me on the road to writing romance. In sixth grade, I wrote a series a PG-rated romp about the two of us, featuring such memorable lines as, “Even though he’s a pagan and I’m a Christian, our love will make it work.”
Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards followed. So what if his teeth were rotting, he shot heroin, and it looked like he combed his hair with an eggbeater? Keith was cool, my first bad boy, (Cut me a break here: I was only fourteen.)Flash forward some twenty years, when I find myself lusting madly for then Captain of the New York Rangers, Mark Messier. “Mess” was the role model for Ty Gallagher, the hero of my first romance, BODY CHECK. He had it all: pure animal magnetism, a killer body, toughness, self assuredness…which is why, I suppose, hockey players made sense to me as heroes. These guys are warriors on a quest: the quest for the Stanley Cup. They’re willing to sacrifice, whether it’s physical, mental, or spiritually, to achieve their goal. They’re sexy, but they’re also deeply emotional, deeply vulnerable. and passionate. Adam Perry, the hero of my newest book, ICEBREAKER, is no exception. Here’s a brief synopsis:
Sinead O’Brien is a high powered Manhattan attorney (She’s one of the siblings featured in the WILD HART saga) who has a rule about never dating clients—that is, until she meets Adam Perry, the newest star of the New York Blades who is also her newest client.Adam has been charged with assault after a borderline hit on another star player. But off the ice he’s a private, no-nonsense guy who knows the Blades are his last shot at Stanley Cup glory. Assembling her case, Sinead at first assumes he’s some bone headed jock. But as things progress, she quickly discovers that there’s a wounded man under that jersey, and she’s starting to fall for him hard—so hard, in fact, that she’s tempted to break her ‘no dating clients’ rule. As for Adam, he’s having trouble focusing on the goal with Sinead in his sights. But true love prevails…
My crushes have served a valuable function in my life: they’ve kept my libido humming (try writing hot love scenes when your sex drive is as a flat as a run over tin can) and my imagination soaring; most importantly, they’ve helped me create romantic heroes who I love to write, and whom readers seem to enjoy. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Deirdre Martin is the New York Times Bestselling author of ten romances. She is best know for her New York Blades series, which centers around a fictitious, New York based hockey team.
