As you all know, we adore Jill Shalvis. We’ve asked her to visit with us again to celebrate her latest release, The Sweetest Thing, book 2 in the Lucky Harbor series (available now from Forever).

For The Sweetest Thing (release 3/28/11)
By Jill Shalvis

Writing a romance called The Sweetest Thing, which centers around a decidedly NOT sweet heroine, amused me. Tara Daniels is wound a little tight and likes things her way. She’s also a former southern belle who appreciates the fact that she’s right. A lot.

The Sweetest Thing? Not exactly.

But her heart’s in the right place, always. And, as it turns out, there’s a man who melts her like butter on a hot roll. Not only that, he can soften her in a way that she isn’t sure she likes. See, Tara thinks she has it all together, but it turns out she doesn’t. She doesn’t know a lot about herself. About all she has is the fact that she can cook like nobody’s business. Oh, how she loves to cook.

Tara was a challenge for me. Because here’s where I admit, I got a lot of her recipes from my husband. True story. I’m married to a big guy who works with his hands and is the ultimate Alpha Man — and yet he can cook. Don’t try to figure him out, it’ll hurt your brain, trust me.

The recipe Good Morning Sunshine Casserole that Tara cooks in the book is all his. Just don’t tell him I “borrowed” it and am telling the world that it’s my heroine’s. It’d just go to his head.

  1. I love characters who are great cooks. But, I admit, I really love it when it’s the *hero* who’s the great cook. Probably because my husband is an awesome cook, and I find it romantic when guys cook for their ladies.

  2. I absolutely adore Jill Shalvis. Her blog is hilarious and I love how she talks her kids. I have a used bookstore in my neighborhood and anytime I see an old harlequin blaze or contemporary I auto buy. There is no need to read the back blurb. I know it’s going to be great. I’ve been waiting for this release. Love Love Love her work. A hero that cooks is perfection in my book. 🙂

  3. I love when characters cook! I’m a huge fan of the Food Network and all things cooking, so combining that with my love for romance novels is fantastic!

  4. Jill Shalvis is one of my go to authors – and I’m behind on her books :X Can’t decide if it’s bad, or if it’s good because this means I totally get to glom and glut on her books when I get the chance!
As for characters that cook… Love ’em. Am a total nutter about well written characters who can, and am a total foodie at heart.
I’m waiting impatiently to get this book! 🙂

  5. I love characters who cook. It’s a plus because often you get recipes along with a good story.

Jill, I am glad to hear that you are home from the hospital. Get well soon, and let the family pamper you.

I love a hero or heroine who can cook. And sometimes there are even good recipes in the books.

    Jill’s books are great!

  7. That was me anonymous – meant to log on with google acct – Pat L.

Said I love a hero or heroine who can cookk and sometimes there are even good recipes in the book.

  8. Aw, thanks so much for having me back here, I love Book Binge.

Oh and as far as The Sweetest Thing? The hero (Ford) can out cook the heroine (Tara) … and if you don’t think she hates that, lol.

  9. Love anything Jill Shalvis writes. Adding a cook to the mix only makes it more interesting.

I like it when a hero cooks. Probably because my husband doesn’t and I wished he did. LOL.

  11. I like it when characters cook. It makes them more real, having to perform some of those same everyday tasks the rest of us do. I also enjoy new recipes (perhaps too much, as I own 100+ cookbooks!)

I think it’s great your hubby cooks. Mine has asked me to teach him to cook when he retires.

I’m looking forward to reading your newest!

Well, I have not read about a lot of characters who cook, but as someone who can NOT cook, I think it’s pretty darn great 😉
Congrats on your new release, Jill!

  13. I do enjoy characters who cook since I have a love/hate relationship with making meals. It takes a lot of creativity to come up with different meals all the time.

  14. I want this book! Since all 4 Borders bookstores close down I can’t shop for this book unless I order from Amazon…and the ebook isn’t available til Friday ugh.

  15. What’s not to love about a book that gives you wonderful characters, a riveting story AND wonderful recipes? Characters who can cook are almost always a favorite of mine because it showcases that they are real, tangible people – who cook, and live their lives just like every one else, it makes them more relatable. Also, it makes us love them, adore them, and admire them that much more. Of course, a man who can cook, is always a plus. Plus, the “hero” doesn’t have to be able to cook, any man who cooks for his woman is a “HERO” in my book! (My hero cooks for me all the time!)

Thank you so much for hosting this amazing giveaway!

  16. Characters who cook are fun but I always wonder about their hands. Most cooks I know have hands that are hardened by handling hot items and by burns so they’re not the sensitive hands of a pianist, for example. Hm….

  18. I love reading books where the characters cook. Doesn’t matter if they’re starting up a bakery or a mom and pop type diner, or just cooking for that special person – I’m there rooting for their success. And, it’s fun if the author shares recipes with us! My husband enjoys cooking and we often try new recipes together.

While I’m not a very good cook, I really enjoy characters who cook well. I like reading about the delicious meals and desserts they’re able to make. I also really enjoy watching cooking shows and cooking competition shows. Top Chef is my favorite.

  22. I love it when there a characters who cook, especially when it the hero. I may not be good at cooking, but I love it when my male friend cook for me. And I think it real when characters cook. They teach me to try new recipes 🙂 Jill, glad you are home, but I hope you feel much better after lot of rest 🙂

  23. Food and romance just seem to go together in my mind, so I love it when the characters can cook really well, or own a restaurant or a catering business. If the author does good descriptions of the food, I’m in heaven – it doesn’t even have to be a dessert food to get me all hot and bothered.

Jill – best wishes on your recovery and on the success of your book.

Having a hero cook for the heroine can be sweet, sexy – or both at once. And a hero who cleans up after cooking?…swoon…

  25. I’ve read a lot of books where the female (usually) character cooks and I’ve actually copied recipes that are occasionally included, but I don’t think I’ve actual made any.

I can’t say that it makes any difference to me if the heroine is a cook or not.

I really enjoyed Simply Irrestible and put a review up at Good Reads. Would love to read Ford and Tara’s story.

My secret fantasy is for a guy to cook for me. I am married for 20 years to a guy who can’t cook so I am impressed when I read about heroes who seduce the heroine by cooking for them. I loved the Domestic Gods series by Robin Kaye for this reason.

Any man who cooks is a hero in my book!!!! Hubby gets home first, he cooks since he doesn’t want to wait to eat til I get home!!! I’m such a dirty stayout! LOL (^-^)
