What Are You Reading? (517)

Holly: I finished my re-read of the Study series by Maria V. Snyder with Magic Study and Fire Study. Fire Study didn’t hold up as well as the previous two books, but I’m glad I read the entire series. I’m currently listening to The Lady in the Coppergate Tower by Nancy Campbell Allen and I’m reading Strange Love by Ann Aguirre.

Rowena: It’s been a pretty good reading week for me. I read One Last Chance by Therese Beharrie and Forbidden Promises by Synithia Williams. Now, I’m reading Strange Love by Ann Aguirre for my buddy read with Ames and Holly and I’m listening to my book club book, Devious Lies by Parker S. Huntington. After this, I’m going to jump into Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews and I can’t wait.

What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!

My favorite read this week was Penelope Douglas’s CREDENCE, her best book since THE BIRTHDAY GIRL. It might be described as “New Adult with reverse harem and enforced proximity elements,” with a 17-year-old (later 18-year-old) heroine who, upon the death of her parents, goes to live with her father’s step-brother (a man she’s never met) and his two sons (who are in their early twenties) in a house in the Rockies. Then winter comes and the house becomes isolated and snow-bound. The premise sounds porny, but Douglas gets into the thoughts, feelings, and motivations of all four characters and creates a beautiful story of a young woman learning what she wants in life and love. Highly recommended.

I loved Strange Love. I hope you all like it, just be prepared for rather unusual/inventive alien sex. I just finished Beth’s Stable, in Amanda Milo’s Stolen By An Alien series, in which the body parts are much more compatible LOL. I loved it even though I’m not usually into reverse harems. Her alien guys are so dreamy. I want one (or a few) of my own!

I read Strange Love recently and enjoyed it. My favorite of the Study books is definitely Poison Study.

    Since last time ~

    — I recently read/skimmed Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix. Horror is a genre that I generally avoid; however, I was doing gift giving research for a friend who does read horror. The book was quite enjoyable and not intrinsically scary; I learned quite a bit! At heart, it’s a book about books which is something I do like.
    — Also reread, with pleasure, two favorite novellas: His Road Home by Anna Richland and The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan. The latter is currently free for Kindle readers.
    — Continued to make progress with my TOME of a book group book, Ninth Street Women by Mary Gabriel. I’m at page 414 now out of 716.
    — Enjoyed Two Man Station by Lisa Henry which is a contemporary male/male romance set in Australia.
