The FAA has been struggling with dragons attacking their planes, and hire Dane, a supernatural consultant, to look into the matter. What Dane finds in the woods is not quite the problem he expected: a group of dragon kits and their sick father.

When he learns the real reason the family was in the woods, his case only grows more dangerous, and while Dane is plenty experienced at watching his own back, taking care of baby dragons and their handsome, distracting father almost makes danger look easy.

Dane, who is a supernatural consultant, is contacted by a government agent – the head of the SuperFeds (Federal Bureau of Supernatural Investigation) – to contain a group of dragons who are harassing planes that fly by a certain area.  Dane goes out to investigate and finds a bunch of dragon kits who can’t really take care of themselves and one adult male dragon with dragon fever.  He takes the kits and the adult back to his house and contacts a doctor.  While the medicine works immediately for the adult, Mercury, he will still be tired and weak for a few days.  Dane contacts a friend to help him with the kits but when he finds out why a bunch of elemental dragons of different sorts are all one happy family, he decides to investigate further.

The dragons were captured for experimentation and Dane is not happy about it.  He figures out who’s behind it all and then him, Mercury and one of the older dragons (who’s only about 7), Nickel, go to try to save any more dragons who are being tortured.

While I previously had never read any book by Mell Eight I now know that this certainly won’t be my last.  I adored her characters and how they all had their own distinct personalities.

When Dane finds the kits and Mercury he’s only thinking of getting them healthy and then getting them on their way.  The kits, however, get under his skin because they’re just so darned cute and when the attraction between him and Mercury kicks up he’s a goner. 🙂

The kits, Nickel, Copper, Lumie, Chrome, Iron (aka ‘Ron) plus an unhatched egg are seriously adorable.  They love their daddy, even though he’s not their real daddy, and are very protective of him.  Nickel, for being so young is pretty savage but means well, and little Lumie is too cute for words and has extraordinary powers.  Together they made an awesome family. I really loved Mercury as well and his love of his kits.  The “romance” between Dane and Mercury was pretty PG but sweet nonetheless. (PG except for that masturbation scene, of course.)

Overall this was a fun, warm and charming novella.  I can’t wait to see what happens next with Dane, Mercury and the kits.
