To redeem her family’s disgraced name, Lady Louisa Scranton has decided to acquire a proper husband. He needs to be a man of fortune and highly respectable in order to restore both her family’s lost wealth and reputation. She enters the Marriage Mart with all flags flying, determined to find the right bachelor.

But Louisa’s hopes are dashed when the Bishop of Hargate drops dead at her feet—and she is shockingly accused of murder! Soon, Louisa’s so-called friends begin shunning her, because the company of a suspected killer is never desirable in polite society.

The problem comes to the ears of Detective Inspector Lloyd Fellows, by-blow of the decadent Scottish Mackenzie family and an inspector for Scotland Yard. He has shared two passionate kisses with Lady Louisa–and vows to clear her name. For not only does he know she’s innocent, he recognizes he’s falling for the lovely lady.

Fellows is Louisa’s only hope of restoring her family’s honor—and it is he alone who intrigues Louisa in a way that may be even more scandalous than murder…

Lloyd Fellows has been smitten with Louisa Scranton since he met her. They are usually at the same family events as he has been recognized by his brother, the Duke of Kilmorgan. Lloyd’s mother was a tavern wench that his father, the then Duke of Kilmorgan, seduced and then ignored – especially when he found out he had a son. He would not acknowledge Lloyd and this made his life hell growing up. Louisa is related the Mackenzie’s by marriage – her sister is Isabella Mackenzie, married to Mac Mackenzie. The pair have shared a couple of clandestine kisses and neither can stop thinking about the other. They are from different social classes and Lloyd believes he’s not good enough for Louisa.

When Lloyd is called to Richmond to investigate a death, he’s shocked to find that Louisa was the only person with the man when he died and she is now thought to have murdered the man. Lloyd is determined to find the real murderer so that Louisa isn’t accused of the murder. As his investigation continues he finds it harder and harder to stay away from Louisa but he finds he has to or she’ll be in Newgate prison in no time.

This was another wonderful story having to do with the Mackenzie clan. We got to see all of the family members – especially Daniel (who the next book is about) and I loved that. I love revisiting the characters from previous stories – love it.

Lloyd was so very perfect for Louisa and I loved them together. They tried to stay apart and it just made for some wonderful tension between the two. The added part of the story that had to do with the murder investigation weaved in nicely with the love story.

This is definitely one that shouldn’t missed – truly – especially if you love the Mackenzie’s as much as I do.
