Review: A Marquess for Christmas by Vivienne Westlake

A widow in need of rescue. A dissolute Marquess determined not to marry.

When Violet Laurens is accosted on the road by thieves, a handsome stranger comes to her rescue. He is badly injured and doesn’t remember who he is, so she takes him home and cares for him. But the closer they become, the more Violet fears the inevitable moment when he must leave her.

The Marquess of Kittrick has vowed not to marry, despite his family’s wishes. He wants nothing to do with prim and proper young ladies, even a beautiful widow who makes him question all of his previous assumptions.

Every touch, every glance between them builds a passion that neither can deny—or control. But when Kit is no longer able to hide his identity, will he sacrifice his pride and claim Violet as his own? Or will he return to his dissolute ways and destroy the fragile love he never believed he could find?

Violet is heading home after visiting friends when her carriage is set upon by thieves. Almost immediately she believes she is saved as a lone horseman shows up and tries to save the day. Well, he does save the day but ends up getting hurt in the ensuing struggle. When all is said and done Violet ends up taking the gentleman to her home – she’s a widow – and nursing him back to health. When he awakes he knows his name is Kit but nothing else. He knows some things about himself but he can’t say who he is or where he lives. Violet is more than attracted to this man and is pretty darned happy that he can’t remember who he is. She knows it’s wrong but the longer he takes to figure it all out the more time she’ll have with him. They end up becoming bed partners – in a hot and steamy way – as well as friends and companions. The problem is is that after a couple of weeks Kit remembers who he is but he doesn’t tell Violet because he doesn’t want to leave either. He does write a letter to his sister and brother-in-law telling them that he’s fine but that letter ends up being his ultimate downfall.

This was a charming story filled with lovely characters and some pretty hot bedroom scenes. The couple could go from hot and steamy to fun and bantering to throwing snowballs and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Though I liked Kit he was a pretty spoiled man and that got him into trouble. I could see that Violet would be good for him but he was too stubborn to see it all. Violet was a practical woman for the most part and I really enjoyed her character. She seemed to have it all together and wasn’t afraid to put Kit in his place when he needed it.

Overall it was a great story and a nice Christmas read.
