Judith’s review of Right Wolf, Right Time (Cougar Falls #6) by Marie Harte.

Shapeshifter Monty GrayClaw has lived a wild life. A youth spent in Cougar Falls hadn’t prepared him for the outside world, or for Hunters—humans who capture and slaughter Ac-taw. They nearly killed him before he escaped years of torture. Now living safely in Cougar Falls once more, he’s trying to put the past behind him and look toward the future.

That future includes Sophie Tanner, a shy woman new to both her Ac-taw heritage and the town. Sophie is a sweet, lovely young wolf who calls to everything inside him. When an enemy from Monty’s past tracks him down, it will take the gentle woman with a will of iron to save the day. But when their shared history comes to haunt them both, can Monty save his mate, or will she leave him and Cougar Falls behind forever?

The Cougar Falls series of which this novella is the sixth story, is a mythical community that is invisible to anyone who is not a shifter of one sort another, protected by the magical totem that is the subject of book 1. Now a lone wolf who has found a home within a pride of all places, a family grouping of shifters that has embraced cats, wolves, foxes, and even bears.  Month GrayClaw is a man who is at home in Cougar Falls as it is his hometown, but his wild youth took him into the clutches of The Hunters, humans who have as their life work the total destruction of shifters of any kind.  For six years Monty was named Demon and made to fight other shifters to the death just to keep his captors from killing him.  Now that he has escaped and returned to Cougar Falls, he wants to leave his past where it can no longer trouble him, but it appears that isn’t going to happen.

This is a very heart-warming love story between Monty and a gently, shy, reclusive young female shifter who has only just discovered her dual identity and who is still trying to come to some peace with her wolf self.  She and Monty are attracted to each other but both are reluctant to be open about their feelings until Sophie accepts a date with the wolf alpha who wants to claim her.  “Not going to happen!” proclaims Monty and sure enough, he and Sophie light up the skies with their passion and the alpha is out of luck.  Yet Sophie’s past and Monty’s are not as far afield as one would think and both must face the damage of those early years.

This is a novel that deals with the damage of the past and the power of love and acceptance to overcome all of it.  The strange family in which Monty lives accepts Sophie without a qualm and even though the Grey Wolves Pack have accepted her as well, she wants to be with Monty’s family.  Yet somehow they must both face their inner hurts, their fears, their reluctance to be open completely with one another if they truly want a future together.  Sounds like challenges many of us face in real life.

I have read all the books in this series as well as some contemporary romances by this author and have really liked all of them.  Admittedly, some have been better than others, but all the stories resonate with that touch of reality that allows a reader to empathize with the main characters, feel a connection with their situation, and get a sense of satisfaction when the characters find a resolution to their particular crisis.  So it is here.  And while the road to the future is awash with the emotional potholes that keep threatening their relationship, it is a story about the courage that is probably hidden within each of us when we must face the potential loss of everything we hold dear.  I hope you will read this book–the entire series is worth reading–and give it a chance to entertain you.  I think it is worth your time and appreciation.

I give it a rating of 4 out of 5
