Tracy’s review of About That Night (FBI/US Attorney series #3) by Julie James.

He’s Playing Games

Though Rylann Pierce tried to fight the sparks she felt for billionaire heir Kyle Rhodes the night they met, their sizzling chemistry was undeniable. But after being stood up on their first date, Rylann never expected to see him again. So when she finds herself face-to-face with Kyle in a courthouse nine years later, she’s stunned. More troubling to the beautiful assistant U.S. attorney is that she’s still wildly attracted to him.

But She’s Making The Rules

Just released from prison, Kyle Rhodes isn’t thrilled to be the star witness in a high-profile criminal case—but when Rylann comes knocking at his door, he finds she may be the one lawyer he can’t say no to. Still as gorgeous and sharp-tongued as ever, she lays down the law: she doesn’t mix business with pleasure. But Kyle won’t give up on something he wants—and what he wants is the one woman he’s never forgotten.

One night Rylann Pierce met Kyle Rhodes in a bar. They were both college students and though Rylann tried to put Kyle off he ended up walking her home. The two shared an incredible connection and despite Rylann’s better judgment she made a date with Kyle for the next night. The next night, after waiting 2 hours past the appointed time, Rylann finally gave up on Kyle ever showing. She found out the next day that his mother had been killed in a car accident that night so she understood. Unfortunately she never saw Kyle again.

Seven years later Rylann is a US Attorney who has just transferred from the San Francisco office to Chicago. She is immediately assigned a court appearance as the lead on the case has a court conflict. She’s a bit shocked when she finds out that the defendant is none other than Kyle Rhodes. Rylann is nothing but professional but underneath it all she loved seeing Kyle. After that she finds she needs Kyle to be a witness in a case and they work together. Though you can tell that they both want more to happen Rylann knows not to put her case in jeopardy by dating a witness. After the case is done though the pair get closer and closer. There are problems that each need to work around and they may not be able to get past those issues in order to make the relationship work.

This is another great story in the FBI/US Attorney series. I love seeing all the characters from previous books and possibly getting some insight into future books.

This book really worked for me on a lot of different levels. I loved the intelligence of the characters and how they viewed things. Yes, their positions in life (Rylann being a US Attorney and Kyle being an ex-con) made things very hard for them but they worked it out in the end.

When they first got together it was all about the fun and the sex but as they spent more time together they realized it was something more. Kyle especially, which was a shock since he had been such a playboy, was love-struck and though he was scared to voice his feelings he did make the first move in making their relationship more permanent. I loved that! Rylann was the more leery of the two and since these roles are normally reversed it was great to see the man taking the initiative.

In the end it was a fun, funny, entertaining and very sexy book and I very much enjoyed reading it. I can’t wait for the next book by Julie James to come out!
