Thank you to the awesome Book Binge ladies for having us! I’m Bree, one half of the paranormal romance writing duo of Moira Rogers, and I’m here talking about two books–one that releases today and one that only exists in our imaginations.

Archer’s Lady is the third book in the Bloodhounds series, which follows the adventures of a dangerous group of genetically enhanced vampire hunters who patrol the border between America’s frontier and the vampire controlled Deadlands. Though the entire series is paranormal romance, the paranormal aspects actually come from a slightly more steampunk perspective. Inventors created the Bloodhounds using mad science and alchemy, a combination that gave us plenty of opportunities for mischief.

Which brings us to the book that never existed: Keeping Company With Bloodhounds. This illicit title exists only within the world of the Bloodhounds itself, but we thought it would be fun to share excerpts from it to celebrate the release of Archer’s Lady. After all, who would know more about how much fun bloodhounds can be than the Queen of Bloodhound gossip, Miss Leatrice Kettering?

CHAPTER THREE – BRAINS VS BRAWN

There would, of course, be no bloodhounds at all without the Guild’s inventors. Though officially members of the Inventors’ Guild, they are nonetheless employed by, and fall entirely under the purview of, the Bloodhound Guild. They work on nearly everything imaginable, from weaponry to conveyances to household luxuries. But in the early days, they had but one project: the hounds themselves.

The first bloodhound, aptly named Adam, was created sometime in the early 1820s. The exact year is uncertain, since the operation was, at the time, held in the utmost of secrecy. Even now, the oldest Guild associates are disinclined to discuss this first hound—or the events surrounding his rebirth.

What is known is the name of the scientist responsible: Ephraim Phillips—by all accounts a genius, and by some still a madman. His formula, though refined by further research and development, is still in use today, and he set down the fundamental Code of Ethics that guides the creation and training of the bloodhounds.

As for the man himself, he left an illustrious career with the Guild under rather murky, mysterious circumstances, and has since vanished from all view. Some whisper that he did not leave the Guild at all, but rather continued to operate in concealment, devoting his time and attention to ventures deemed too sensitive for public knowledge. In truth, he likely floundered without the Guild’s support, and faded into obscurity.

The current crop of inventors employed by the Guild represent some of this country’s finest minds, and their discoveries have in no way been limited to matters directly affecting the Guild’s operations. Many of the larger cities now enjoy more reliable electrical power and faster public transit thanks to the efforts of these talented men.
