Holly‘s review of Tempted By His Target by Jill Sorenson.

Wanted for the murder of a Mexican drug lord’s son, party girl Isabel Sanborn fled to Oaxaca. Now she owes her life to Brandon Knox, a passing tourist who just saved her from a hit man.
But Knox is no accidental hero—he’s an undercover U.S. marshal assigned to bring Isabel to justice. Instead, wanting to protect her, he joins her on the lam…with cartel goons and corrupt police in hot pursuit!

And as the danger escalates, sexual tension sizzles. For the first time in his career, Brandon considers jeopardizing his mission to safeguard his target. And though Isabel can elude the authorities, she can’t escape her feelings….

This was a great blend of romance and suspense. I really enjoyed both aspects, not just one or the other. That’s a huge thing, since RS has been on my naughty list for awhile.

Isabel Sanborn is on the run from the US government and the leader of a Mexican drug cartel. The leader’s son died of a drug overdose in Isabel’s bed and she panicked and skipped town when she realized what had happened. Now they wants answers. The government sends US Marshal Brandon Knox to bring Isabel back safely. The drug cartel sends a lot less nice people.

Isabel was a strong woman. She made a lot of mistakes when she was younger, but she’s grown and changed. She isn’t the same party girl she used to be. That came across very well and made her an extremely likable character.

Brandon was really conflicted about his assignment right from the beginning. Isabel intrigues him and for the first time in his career he’s hesitant to bring a target in. Normally secrets being kept between the h/h – like the fact that he’s a US Marshall there to bring her in and she doesn’t know it – really drive me insane. I was able to look past Brandon’s actions because he was so conflicted about it. He knew he didn’t have a choice about bringing her in, but he struggled. It still frustrated me, but I didn’t struggle with the story as much as I normally would have.

There was a lot of action in the book, but a good portion was focused solely on Brandon and Isabel, which means there was good balance. Overall this was an excellent romantic suspense that made my heart race.

4 out of 5.
