Musings on the nook

Technology is the name of the game at this day in age. When the Kindle first came out, it was a sizeable amount of money. IIRC it was around $350. For an item that you couldn’t actually touch or test, it was ridiculous and unthinkable to most readers. It was unthinkable for me. I think that Barnes and Noble is genius for not only coming out with the nook, but making it available in stores for customers/readers to actually test.

The Kindle slowly dropped in price and has stayed steady at $259. The nook is the same price. When added to the fact that you can actually LOOK at it before paying, it seems like a no brainer. People love their i-Phones and anything touch screen. That’s another reason that nook is so appealing.

I never would have gotten the Kindle if they hadn’t sent it to me for a free trial. No way in hell. If I didn’t have my Kindle, I would be first in like to get the nook. There are some features I don’t like. Their customer service isn’t the speediest. It’s frozen up on me more than once. However, you have to remember that this is the first model that they’ve put out. Much like the Kindle and the Sony, the bugs and kinks get worked out as newer models come out. Or in B&N’s case, you get wireless updates. That is something I LOVE.

What are some e-Readers you have seen in stores? What did you think/not think? What kind of e-Reader do you have?

  1. I have a Sony Reader. It isn’t the newest one, but it does have a touch screen. I got mine about 8 months before B&N said they were going to release an ereader, or I would have waited. Once I save up for a nook, I’m going to sell my Sony reader to you oldest niece(she reads on it the entire time she is at my house).

  2. Casee, my friends f-i-l has a new Kindle and he says he has to charge it almost every other day. Is that how yours is? I’ve only charged my Astak about 4 times since Christmas so I can’t imagine having to charge it so often.

I have a PRS 505. Mostly because Amazon took too long to get it’s product to Canada and Nook was not even released at the time.

Before the PRS, I had my trusty eBookwise. My only issue was the eBookwise was it’s size and weight. Other than that, it served it’s purpose!

While deciding on what to buy, I was recommended the Cybook. But I didn’t want to get something that I couldn’t test first.

Although I bought my 505 because I didn’t have any other option, I love it!! The 505 is perfect for my needs!

I don’t plan on getting a new reader anytime soon. Unless they improve on the existing e-Ink technology. Then I might be tempted 🙂

  4. I bought my gen3 Cybook about 2 years ago. here in Europe I had the choice between the Iliad and the Cybook. I was able to test both at a book fair, the price was the only reason I went with it. never had to regret that decision. Love it.
nowadays I could switch to a Kindle (available in Europe or Sony) – no use, still way too many restrictions, web access doesn’t work properly, the free books for US Kindle are not free over here and the few books I do read in German, not available for either device.

  5. I have a Sony 505 e-reader and I’m not that impressed. Because I’m a fast reader, I like to change the screen quickly. It takes too long for the next page to load.

Also with the Nook being touch screen and in color, Sony and the Kindle better hope on the next big thing.

  6. I started off with an Ebookwise reader and used it for years with no major problems. I liked that it had a built in light and a touch screen. Then I purchased a first generation Sony reader so I could read pdf files. It’s pretty basic and works fine, but I had to pay extra for a light and cover, and it doesn’t have a touch screen.

  7. Hi Casee!

Well, I have only every seen the Sony models at Borders before nook came out in B&N stores. I wanted a Kindle for a long time but a major reason (besides price) that I didn’t get one is because I had never seen it or played with it. The idea of the technology is great and fabulous and I was willing to sell my soul to Amazon, lol, but without seeing it, touching it, feeling the product in my hand, I continued to be extremely reluctant to part with the money.

The nook in stores is a serious no brainer. The stores have working models and you can use all the features on it. From downloading to changing font sizes/screensavers.

Now, I want one and if I can save up the money I can just go to my nearest BN and buy it without waiting for it to be shipped to me. But hey, if Amazon wants to send me a free Kindle, I’ll take it!
