Rowena’s review of Chosen by P.C. and Kristin Cast.

Bloodlust and dark forces are at work at the House of Night…

Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird’s adventures at the school are about to take a mysterious turn. Those who appear to be her friends are turning out to be enemies. And oddly enough, sworn enemies are also turning into friends. So begins the gripping third installment of this “highly addictive series” (Romantic Times), in which Zoey’s mettle will be tested like never before. Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover about the secretive and sinister power that’s turning dead fledglings into bloodsucking monsters must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity.

Speaking of rare: Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected position of having three boyfriends. Mix in more than a little forbidden desire to the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster of massive proportions. Then, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith, and Zoey’s horrid step-loser in particular, are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres. But, as Zoey and her friends find out, things are not always what they seem…

Dang, drama!

This book really took off and ended with a bang! My eyes couldn’t read the words fast enough to suit me. I was anxious, I was excited and I was extremely nosy. I bugged Ames, Monroe and my cousin Domi to spoil the book for me but they would not and when I got to the end, I was glad that they didn’t spoil it for me because all you heard from me at the end was, *gasp* and “HOLY CRAP” and “NO EFFING WAY”, it was great.

This is the third book in the House of Night series and so far, it’s my favorite. Zoey is still being a little hoey but she’s got a third boyfriend. She’s still got the two from the last book but she’s added another one into the mix and holy hot damn, it was the business.

Some stuff went down in the last book that had me raising my eyebrows, wondering what the hell is going to happen now and then in this book, we find out just what is going to happen. In this book, vampyres are getting killed and Zoey found the first vampyre with Aphrodite. I swear, watching Zoey and Aphrodite go at it keeps me laughing. I love that Aphrodite doesn’t pretend to be something that she’s not and I love that even though she has been pretty much shunned from everyone, she’s still staying true to her character because it makes me love the hell out of her. I wasn’t expecting to like her all that much. When we first met her in Book One, she was a bitch and even though she’s still a big ol’ bitch now, she’s a likeable bitch and I like her character. I’m wondering what’s going to happen with her in the future.

In this book, I was still pretty shocked over the stuff that went down with Stevie Rae. It’s a weird situation to be in where Zoey is concerned and I can’t say what I’d do if I was in her shoes but all of the secrets that she is keeping from every damn body annoyed me some in this book. I didn’t understand why she didn’t trust her friends to keep the truth from Neferet. I mean, if she wasn’t going to tell them everything (and yes, yes, I understand why she felt she needed to keep it to herself but seriously, come on now…) then she could have at least been up front about it from the get go. She didn’t have to tell them what her secrets were, only that she did have some secrets and she couldn’t tell them what they were just yet but that she would later…when she was sure that she could. It would have helped matters so much and none of her friends would still be pissed off at her.

But well, I guess it had to happen this way to keep the story going. Even still, I loved the heck out of this book and cannot wait for the next one. This book had it all, intrigue, a hot cast of characters and some steam that had me raising my eyebrows. It was a good one, if you’re a fan of these books then you won’t be disappointed in this one and if you haven’t read this series then I honestly suggest that you put this series on your list because it’s a good one.

This book is available from St. Martin’s Griffin. You can buy it here.
