Silver-tongued Viscount Sanburne is London’s favorite scapegrace. Alas, Lydia Boyce has no interest in being charmed. When his latest escapade exposes a plot to ruin her family, she vows to handle it herself, as she always has done. Certainly she requires no help from a too-handsome dilettante whose main achievement is being scandalous. But Sanburne’s golden charisma masks a sharper mind and darker history than she realizes. He shocks Lydia by breaking past her prim facade to the woman beneath…and the hidden fire no man has ever recognized. But as she follows him into a world of intrigue, she will learn that the greatest danger lies within — in the shadowy, secret motives of his heart.

Four years ago Lydia Boyce had her heart broken. Since then she’s been throwing herself into her father’s business of selling artifacts from Egypt to help fund his work in that country. Giving a speech that would possibly end in enormous funding for her father, Lydia is interrupted by Viscount Sanburne as he attempts to show his father a fabulous artifact that he has acquired. Unfortunately for Sanburne, Lydia then spouts all the evidences that the piece is, in fact, a forgery.

Sanburne is humiliated, but is determined to find out if his father enlisted Lydia to help him discount the piece or if it was just a stroke of luck on Lydia’s part. During Sanburnes’ investigation of the artifacts, and of Lydia, he seeks her out. They begin something of an odd friendship – this dashing Lord and this 26 year old spinster who’s no where near a raving beauty. They join together and discover many odd things happening with artifacts and people and during this time become closer. Although they both have their personal family issues to deal with they find that they deal with them well together.

This book was amazing. Meredith Duran has such an incredible writing style it just draws you in and doesn’t let go. The descriptions of everything from a party Sanburne is having at the start of the book to a love scene in the middle of a rainstorm just captured my attention and my heart.

The h/h were so far at the opposite ends of the spectrum that I truly couldn’t fathom how they could ever come together in the end of the book and have it be a satisfying union. I needn’t have worried. Once again Ms. Duran has brought us a wonderfully romantic yet completely realistic conclusion.

I wait impatiently for her next book to release.

  1. Great review, Tracy!

I am w/ you on wondering how such opposite people could end up together. That they ended up complimenting each other so well made it all that much better.

  2. Awww thanks Casee. It was just an amazing book! This is like one of the ultimates in opposites attract and I loved it. Good stuff.

This is one of the best books I’ve read all year, really enjoyed it! Great characters, wonderful writing and a tender steamy romance. I loved how they were so opposite but yet still came together as if they always belonged together. I can’t wait for Duran’s next book.

  4. Thank you Tracy for a great review! The more reviews I read of this book, the more I want to read it! *checks library catalogue again*

I love watching the deft hand of an author bring a two characters together, especially if they are opposites.

…to a love scene in the middle of a rainstorm…

OK, that so caught my attention 😉

  5. KarLynP – I agree – one of the best historicals I’ve read this year. And I’ve read some really good ones! Glad you liked it too.

Seriously the rainstorm is a great scene! Let me know what you think!

  6. I loved this book. Lydia and James were fascinating, as was their relationship. And you’re right, the ending was wonderfully romantic.
