Casee‘s review of Daring Time by Beth Kery

He sees her, wants her, needs her—now he has to have her.

Chicago Detective Ryan Daire has many secrets: a love for Shakespeare, an appreciation for all the finer things in life, and an absolute lack of restraint in the bedroom. Now he has an even bigger secret. In every shadow of the sprawling mansion he’s recently inherited he can see her—tempting, ethereal, and untouchable. Hope Stillwater inhabited that mansion in 1906. Raw desire has formed a conduit between these two passionate souls who are separated by the barrier of time. Intoxicated by each other’s presence, Ryan and Hope come close to crossing that inviting boundary between two worlds. But there is danger: Ryan’s job has put him on the trail of a depraved criminal in an investigation that’s risking Hope’s eternal fate. Now he must do whatever it takes to change history, protect Hope from harm, and set his desires free.

This was my first Beth Kery book. I liked it so effing much that I immediately picked up Wicked Burn when I was done. This author is gifted at writing hot sex, good story lines and strong, sexy heroes. I could not get enough of this book.

Now I’m always a little leery of time travel books. I’ve read my fair share of them and liked about half of them. This is my favorite type of time travel. It focused on the romance more than anything else. Though there is a suspense element to the book, it’s definitely in the background. The bulk of the book focuses on Ryan and Hope.

When Ryan is given an old house by his mentor, he originally intends to sell it. After he takes a walk through the house and sees tantalizing glimpses of a woman he thinks may be a ghost, he’s not so ready to sell. When he sees Hope Stillwater in the mirrored wardrobe in his bedroom, he’s convinced that she is very much alive, even if she was born 100 years ago. After investigating who she is, Ryan realizes that she’s about to die a horrible death unless he can stop it. Now he just has to figure out how to travel from 2008 to 1906.

Hope Stillwater is a rather independent woman in her time. She works hard to help women avoid being forcefully taken into white slavery. It’s her passion to help those innocent women that gets her taken by Diamond Jack, a notorious Chicago criminal.

Hope and Ryan are so sweet together, it brings a tear to my eye. Things that happened at the beginning of the book, when Ryan first discovered Hope, are explained toward the end. I really liked how Kery tied the whole thing together. It just worked. She also did a really great job of writing the differences between Ryan and Hope and what they will have to overcome.

She also writes about reincarnated souls. I have to say, that I had an AKISA flashback. Srsly. I really started muttering to myself b/c I loved the book up to that point. I told myself if this ended the same way that AKISA did I was giving the book a 1. I got all worked up for nothing, b/c that didn’t happen (thank gawd).

If you’re a time travel fan and/or a fan of erotica, this is definitely the book for you. Don’t miss it.

4.5 out of 5.

This book is available from Berkley Trade. You can buy it here or here in e-format.

I have been trying to get a copy of Wicked Burn for ages now but It’s hard to get a copy of the book in the bookstore and I don’t want to order online. The review of Daring Time sounds even better! I’m going to check out my local Borders to see if this copy would be in the store.

  2. I loved “Wicked Burn”, even though it was heavier subject matter. I’m glad you enjoyed “Daring Time” Casee. There were elements that bothered me, but overall I enjoyed it.

  3. Stacy, I loved Wicked Burn, too. I finished it a few days ago.

Estella, if you get it, I hope you enjoy it!

Gaby, I love your trust in me. I hope I don’t let you down. LOL

  4. Beth, AKISA is A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. It was a time travel and the ending ruined the whole book for me.

  5. Casee,

I have been wanting Daring Time for awhile. I had two reasons for not getting it. The trade paper price, and some erotic time travels are just not up to par. Too much focus on the erotic and not enough answers for me.

I bought it, and read it this past weekend. I loved it! I think the sex was hotter in Wicked Burn, but the story was so much more satisfying in Daring Time, and it was still hot. I think Beth Kery is fast becoming an autobuy for me.
