What I’ve Been Reading This Week

Happy Sunday (night)!

I kept meaning to post this earlier today but real life got in the way. My oldest has her state project due tomorrow and we were putting the finishing touches on her display board and her speech. Hopefully she’ll ace this one…I think she will.

The hubby’s b-day gathering with my family was fun. Everyone was late so we were starving by the time everyone got here. I swear I need to tell my family to arrive at least a 1/2 hour earlier than everyone else. Of course when they’re the only one’s attending… What’s a body to do?

And I just opened my email and got one from Kelley Armstrong! Holy shit if that’s not enough to put icing on the cake of a great weekend, I don’t know what is! lol She was just letting me know I’d won one of her books on DIK but dang – that’s very cool! If you didn’t get a chance to read her posts this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday you should – they were great.

I didn’t post it last week cuz there was so much going on but if you want to read my review on Bound and Determined by Shayla Black you can do so here.

Ok – so I didn’t feel like I read that much this week but when I stopped and looked at the list I guess I did. 5 were short stories so they don’t really count as 5 – just 1 novella, really. lol

So my first read of the week was Coyote’s Mate by Lora Leigh. Book 112 in the Breed series…ok, not that many but the latest. I liked the story but yet I didn’t. It hurt my heart. Truly it did. I thought that the heroine held onto her anger way too long but she finally let it go and saved herself nicely. Then the hero did something uber retarded…and frankly the way his character was written he should have friggin known better. He knew the score on soooooo many things – things other didn’t – in fact he made it his job to know. The fact that he pulled this thing and supposedly didn’t know what would happen was too unlikely for me – and I’m a damned forgiving reader. It made it just an ok read for me in the end. I still liked the series though and I’m looking forward to Cabal’s book.

Next up was The Prodigal Daughter by Jeffrey Archer for my re-read challenge. I’ll post my review on Tuesday. Oh and I’m only 2 weeks into the TBR challenge that I gave myself and I’ve fucked up already. This one has been on my shelf for so long I’m counting this as my re-read and my TBR. Yeah, I suck! lol (the book is so old I couldn’t even find a decent picture for it!)

Next were 4 short stories by Amber Kell…the Moon Pack Series – Attracting Anthony, Baiting Ben, Courting Calvin and & Denying Dare (all m/m stories). I read about these at Kris ‘n’ Good Books and since I like novellas and shorts I picked them up and read them quite quickly. While they weren’t the best shifter stories I’ve read…since out of the 4 shorts only 2 people actually shift, but they were cute. I had some issues with editing and words left out & giggling men (which is never my favorite) but other than that they were ok.

When I was buying the Moon Pack series from All Romance ebooks I got a free short called Friends with Benefits by Cat Johnson. A very short story about a couple who’ve known each other since 8th grade and just recently have become friends with benefits. However when one of them sleeps with someone else (they weren’t exclusive) then the female of the pair starts to look at her feelings about the relationship. Cute short read. Heroine a tad annoying but she was ok.

Gorgeous as Sin by Susan Johnson I read for The Book Binge. I’ll let you know when my review is posted.

Last but not least was Temptation Ridge by Robyn Carr. Good book. For the most part I really liked it. It was a little syrupy in parts but overall a good story with a lot going on…which is one of the things I love about the series. I have to admit that when I closed the book I said “awwwww” lol

I hope you all have a wonderful week!
Happy Reading!

  1. Is it wrong that I’m relieved you only read 5 books this week. You’re so dang efficient and prolific I’m always green with jealousy when I read your weekly list.

I’m glad your boyfriend had a nice birthday. I’m going to traffic school online as I type this. Such fun I have.

  2. I have Coyote’s Mate. I’ve just been on this big historical romance thing and I seem to be enjoying myself, lol. I’ll get to it. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Gorgeous As Sin.

  3. I agree with your issues with Coyote’s Mate. I thought it was a bit far-fetched that the hero didn’t know what his actions would cause, but on the other hand, I loved it! LOL. I can’t help but love her breeds :).

Isn’t it exciting no matter what the reason is to have a message in your inbox from an author? 🙂

I’d say you did pretty good! And I hope your daughter does score well on her project!! Good Luck to her!

  4. Rosie you were doing you traffic school at 11 at night? You poor thing. Hope you did well.

Anna – I feel the same but unfortunately those issues made me lower my rating significantly.

Barbara – I try not to get too involved in one sub-genre because I get stuck and then never want to move on! lol Glad you’re enjoying your historical kick!

Amy – Yes, he should have known…and it hurt me to read it. Omg she was so sad and I was sad right along with her!
I hope she scores well on her project too. I’ll try to post the pictures of her display board but it looks so much better in person! lol

  5. Glad to hear that your hubby had a nice b-day 😀 it’s always fun!! and LOL, tell them to come 1 hour before the time you want to eat 🙂

Lucky you!!! Which book from KA are you getting?

Can’t wait to read your review of the Jeffrey Archer. I read one book by him, the one about twins separated at their birth and both running to become president. Liked it 🙂

Are you going to review TR? I really enjoyed it 🙂

  6. It was being able to feel that sadness and hurt right along with her that made it so great. Leigh knows how to write intense scenes even if they started from not so believable actions.

You share little silly moments with your kids. I have one that happened last night.

I was in my room reading and Devin knocked on my open door. I smiled and said, “Come in.”
He walked in and said, “Hey, Mom, can I sleep over tonight?”

OMG, Can I sleep over tonight, he says! I started laughing! He still sleeps in my room alot, on the floor, so instead of just asking if he can sleep in my room, he added a bit of humor that he knows I wouldn’t be able to refuse!

    Little stinker!

Just thought I’d share that with you, since you share things like that too :).

  7. You read Jeffrey Archer?! I had no idea that he was read much outside the UK. He’s a bit of a pariah here, you know.

Having said that I did once read Cain and Abel a very, very long time ago.

  8. Nath – it was fun! And yes, I need to tell them to arrive early cuz that was just damned frustrating! lol Although everyone was in such a good mood that we just kind of laughed through it. 🙂
I’ll have to think about the TR review – not sure if I’ll do one.

Amy – yes, hurting along with her made for great reading but that was just too unbelievable for me. I think with me I can suspend belief unless it’s the hero hurting the heroine either emotionally or, of course, physically. It was a good book but those were things I just didn’t deal with well.
omg Amy that is sooo cute! My kids always want to sleep out on the couches in the living room or on the floor in the family room – so much more fun than their beds apparently. The love, love, love it when my hubby pitches the camping tent in the living room and lets them sleep in there!

Jenre – well I don’t normally read Jeffrey Archer but I have in the past and read The Prodigal Daughter for my re-read since it was on my shelf. I read Kane and Abel way back when as well…TPG is the next book in that series. I have the 3rd book (can’t remember the name) but haven’t read it yet.

  9. I’m being lazy but I’m wondering if the Susan Johnson is the same one recently reviewed at DA. If so, I’m super curious to find out what you thought about it.

  10. Congrats on the KA book! She is such an incredible writer, and I loved her DIK posts.

I’ve been curious about the Lora Leigh series’, but am sort of overwhelmed by it, and can’t even figure out where to start.

  11. Stacy – of course I had to go over and see what DA had to say about Gorgeous as Sin. I was a bit more forgiving than that review but that about sums it up. Same book. Ugh. lol

Renee – some people really like the Breed series. I’ve found people who like her the first part of the series (in ebooks) great and then feel that they started going downhill with the print books and vice versa. I like them. The first few books in the series in print weren’t my fav but I’m still a fan of the series.
