Genres: Romantic Suspense

Hero: Kendall Peterson
Heroine: Annie Morrow
Grade: 4 out of 5

He came to her unexpectedly, and he changed her life.

When Pete Taylor first offered his services as a bodyguard, Annie Morrow wanted nothing to do with him. She was sure the threats against her weren’t serious. While the Indian death mask she was working on was valuable, it wasn’t worth killing for. One murder attempt later, Annie was awfully glad to have him around. She owed him her life. Suddenly she was beginning to believe in heroes — and dreams. Pete was a real man, and the only person she could allow herself to trust.

Sometimes, though, even heroes have their secrets…

Suzanne Brockmann has written a lot of books and I’m doing my very best to make sure that I’ve read each and every one of them because Suz is a favorite author of mine. I still have a long way to go but I’m still over here trucking along, checking off the Suz titles as I read them and still enjoying the heck out of her writing.

I was glad to see that I wasn’t disappointed with this book and even though it wasn’t my most favorite of her works, I still enjoyed the story and the characters quite a bit. You see this story is about Annie Morrow and Pete Taylor. Annie is under investigation with the FBI and the CIA as a suspect in a couple of incidents and they’re making her life miserable. She’s totally innocent but they don’t know and when she starts getting death threats, the CIA comes in the form of Peter Taylor to be her bodyguard.

It’s funny how many times I’ve read this storyline and yet, I enjoy each book just the same. Some authors do a better job at it then others and Suzanne Brockmann is one of those authors that just blows me away with her ability to get me to know her characters and love them just as I would any of my friends.

What I enjoyed about this story was the way that Pete and Annie came together. We see the mutual attraction that builds as each day passes and we see the trust issues that each of them go through and though it was frustrating at times, it wasn’t unbearable or even annoying. It just was.

I’m not a big fan of the “big secret” plots but in this one, it worked. It worked because Pete went under cover and try as he might to not fall in love with the beautiful Annie, he did anyway and when they’re making love (yes, I went there) and he knows that she doesn’t know his real name, I loved how he asked her that no matter what happens in the next couple of days, remember that I love you. I loved that he knew she didn’t want to hear what he had to say right then and there and I loved how he told her, I won’t say anything now but remember tomorrow morning when I do finally tell you that I love you.

It was too cute for words.

Pete was one of those protective heroes, the ones that you know will kick anyone’s ass who dared to harm his loved ones. He’s the kind of hero that you want in your corner when things go down and he’s the kind of hero that gets things done. He’s dependable and he’s manly man and he’s just a really great hero, one that I found myself mumbling, “I want one of these” more than a couple of times while reading this.

Annie, on the other hand was equally fantastic. I loved that she didn’t understand why she needed a bodyguard and I loved that she wasn’t a big fan of getting a bodyguard but when she finally did get her bodyguard, she didn’t make too many boneheaded mistakes and for the most part, she listened to what Pete had to say. The way she reacted to the news of just exactly who Pete was, was totally believable and I didn’t find myself rolling my eyes at all so good job on that, Suz.

Overall this book was a good read. It was one of those really quick reads that is perfect for the times when you don’t want to invest too much time in a story. The story moved at a great pace and the romance between Pete and Annie was enjoyable to be apart of. I enjoyed this book and think that other fans of Suz Brockmann will enjoy this book as well.

  1. Well you know I liked this book a lot, though it’s not my favorite, by far. It just doesn’t as much sound like her, but I did enjoy it. Annie was smart and cool, and Pete was sexy and a bit tortured, since he was keeping a big secret from her.

Now I have to prepare for DoN – it’s killing me!

  2. Seneca

I like it when a heroine doesn’t do stupid things to put herself or others in danger.

I know I read one book from this author. I don’t remember what it was, though, only that I didn’t like it.

Which book do you suggest I should start with if I were to pick this author up again?

  3. This was a nice read. I agree not my favorite but still nice. I agree that I liked that Annie actually listened to her bodyguard and was not stupid about having one.

Seneca, I love all of her Troubleshooter books and her Seal Team 10 Books.

    Stacy,

It’s not one of my favorites by Suz but I did enjoy this book. I’m so eager for DoN, it’s not even funny. Goodness, I just can’t wait!

    Seneca,

Prince Joe, the first book in the TDD series, it’s about Navy SEAL Team 10 and they’re soooooo sexy. I’ll email you with the reading order and everything. =)
