Bingeaduckia: What Are You Thankful For?

Posted December 12, 2008 by Holly in Features | 9 Comments

Sometimes I think we, as a romance community, forget to take a minute to think about the things we’re thankful for. We get so wrapped up in our own little blogging world we don’t think about all the things we’re grateful for.

When we started putting together this event I emailed some of our fellow bloggers and asked if they’d be willing to write up a brief paragraph about the things they’re thankful for. The response was overwhelming and so humbling. Throughout the week I’ll be posting their responses – both here and at The Good, The Bad and The Unread. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did.

What I’m thankful for in the romance community?

The online romance community has some of the most generous and open minded and intelligent people I’ve met in my life, and I am very thankful that I have gotten to know some of them better through the years. There are those who champion causes, such as when the SmartBitches spearheaded the Google-bombing of Bill Napoli (sexist asshat), and their compilation of examples of plagiarism in Cassie Edwards’ oeuvre; or when Nora Roberts’ teamed with them to raise funds and awareness for the plight of the black footed ferrets. Or those whose enthusiasm spreads to everyone around them, such Kristie(J)’s Quest for Judith James’ Broken Wing–or Dear Author’s viral promotion of Nalini Singh’s Slave to Sensation. Through the online romance community I have been introduced to Karen Scott (*waving* Hello, pardner!), to lisabea (she who you must blame, she started it all), to Mad/Fatin, AmyC, Christine, sula, the awesome Wendy, our very own SuperLibrarian, Sybil and the duckies, you lady Bingers, the wonderful ladies at Romance Novel TV, and so many more bloggers. Then we have the many many authors: Ann Aguirre, Shiloh Walker, Jaci Burton and so many more authors (too many names, too crappy a memory to name all–not to mention the limited space). I have been exposed to different points of view and all sorts of new things, from reading material to philosophical, religious and political discussions. In short, I’m thankful for all the people I’ve met through the online romance community. Thank you, to each and everyone of you ladies (and gents, ’cause there ARE some out there too).

Being fairly new to romancelandia, I am so incredibly grateful to have found a community that shares my love of romance and reading. For so long, I felt like I was the only person around reading romance. When I discovered this community I realized that, not only was I not alone, but there are tons of friendly, caring people out there just dying to share their experiences. The community has fed my reading addiction, provided me with opportunities to share my thoughts, and introduced me to wonderful women from around the world. I am so thankful to have had this experience to get to know you all. Keep reading! Keep recommending! May the TBR piles continue to grow!

  1. I am grateful for many things. The amazing friends I’ve met through blogging, and the wonderful books (and movies!) that have been recommended. The respect that other romance readers have shown me, since none of my RL friends/family read romance, and having people who “get” it is such a great feeling. The sense of humor readers and writers have. The extreme generosity I’ve personally experienced. I am very grateful for all these things, and more.

  2. What a great post! (and thank you Azteclady!)

I’m thankful for every single reader who has ever bought and read one of my books, reviewers who choose my book to read out of what I’m sure is an astronomical selection–and review and give an honest opinion of what they thought. I’m thankful for my fellow author friends who take time out of their day to share a few words here and there with me, for great blogs where I can stay updated on the state of the romance industry, and generally all around good people that I’ve met here and there, like Azteclady and Katiebabs and Sybil and Holly and Limecello and all the fun people on Twitter who make me feel like I’m not all alone out there.

It’s always nice to feel like you’re part of a community, and I’m very thankful I get to be a part of this one. 🙂

  3. I’m grateful I read a review of that new anthology (Dead After Dark?) this morning, complete with the recommendation to check it out from the library due to quality or the lack thereof, or I would’ve purchased a crappy book over lunch today!

  4. lorraine

Yep, I’m with Stacy. I don’t have anybody in RL with whom to share my love of romance novels. *all the people I know have lousy taste in books* LOL I’m thankful to have found all the lovely websites out there that talk about romance books with the respect they deserve. Thanks Holly, Rowena and Casee for providing one of my favorites places to visit.

  5. I am thankful for all the friends that I have made through blogging and joining the ranks of the romance community. Like Stacy and Lorraine…I am really the only one of my friends or my family that read romance and I find it so wonderful to be able to share my thoughts and feelings with other people who enjoy reading romance as much as I do.

So thank you all for being so great and while I do not often post…I stop by daily to visit your site and many more.

  6. Wonderful post!!!
I’m thankful for the creative outlet that the online romance community provides for me, since it’s the perfect forum for sharing thoughts whether they be serious or silly, on a passion shared by all of us: reading romance. But most of all, I’m thankful for the friendships I’ve forged with all of the bloggers, readers and authors from around the world who have touched my life in some way throughout the year.

Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful holiday season.
