Bingeaduckia: Welcome to the Insanity

Posted December 10, 2008 by Holly in Features | 17 Comments

I come from a big Italian family. Holidays at our house are – as I’m sure you can imagine – crazy. It’s loud, rowdy…and filled with love.

Our little romance community is much like that, I think. We have fights and drama, but we also have a lot of love. Books brought us together, but the love is what keeps us going. Love of reading, love and mutual respect for each other. We might have fights now and again (or as I like to call them..debates) but at the end of the day we’re all here for one common purpose: To share our love of books.

This week, we wanted to remind everyone that it’s all about the love.

In honor of the romance community, Book Binge and The Good, The Bad and The Unread have teamed up to bring you Bingeaduckia!!

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the online romance community. We’ll have games, excerpts, book reviews, guest spots and giveaways. Did I mention the giveaways?

In keeping with our “together” theme this week, we’re featuring anthologies. To kick things off, I want to know – Do you read anthologies? Why or why not? What are the best anthologies you’ve read this year? What anthos are you looking forward to in the upcoming months?

The celebration is going on until next Wednesday. Be sure to come back and play with us as the week progresses.

  1. I love anthologies. I feel like I get more for my money since I am getting more than one story for the price of one!
    Thanks,
    Natasha

  2. Anthologies have definitely helped me discover new writers. Not sure if Mysteria and Mysteria Lane count as anthologies, but I enjoyed both of those. Wolfsbane and Mistletoe was pretty fun, too. And The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance is sitting on my table right now.

  3. I read anthologies, but only when one of the authors featured is a favorite–basically my thinking is that I’m paying full price for that one story, and if I do like any of the others, bonus!

So… not a huge fan of anthologies, actually.

  4. I don’t read a lot of anthologies, but when I do, it’s usually because it includes a story from one of my favorite author. The last one I read was The Magical Christmas Cat

  5. I like to read anthologies because it gives me a little taste of new authors. I have gone on to read other books from some of these authors.

I find that I do most of my anthology reading at Christmas. There are usually quite a few offered every year.

  6. Chris,
I have the Mysteria Lane antho in my TBR pile. I’m hoping to get to it soon (been saying that since it was released..heh).

    AL,
I like to pick up anthos by authors I’ve never tried before. My thinking there is if I don’t like them, I don’t have to slog through a full length novel. If I do like them, I usually end up picking up longer titles by them.

    Cathy,
What did you think of it? I was really impressed with all the stories in it, which doesn’t happen often for me.

  7. I enjoy reading anthologies. They are a great way to discover new to me authors. Though, I usually choose anthologies that have at least one author I already know and like. That way I will hopefully enjoy at least one story in the book for sure. I also figure that those particular authors were grouped together for a reason and that if I like one I will like the others too.

Two anthologies that I recently read and liked are It Happened One Night and Snowy Night With A Stranger.

Also, one of the anthologies coming out in 2009 that I want to read is Not That Innocent with Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, etc.

  8. I love anthologies. There’s something about a book that contains stories I can completely get through in one sitting without being interrupted and come back to enjoy the next story later. Also, I’ve come across some really fantastic authors who are new to me in anthologies I pick up.

I think my favorite anthology of the year was is probably a tie between The Mane Event by Shelly Laurenston and To All A Good Night.

The one I’m currently looking forward to is Heating Up The Holidays.

  9. Karin,

I just finished Heating up the Holidays and it was wonderful. I especially loved the Shalvis entry, since I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for Christina’s story. I hope to have a review up in the next few days. =)

  10. I find anthologies at times and frustrating at others. I love it as a way to find new authors with knowing some of the authors. I often want more of the story. Hard to do with the short word count.

  11. I love anthologies…I think that this is a great way to meet new authors and find some that may eventually become favorites. I, also, like being able to read a story in a sitting as I am the world’s slowest reader.

I am sure that there are some that I am looking forward to but of course my brain has frozen at this point.

  12. I read a lot of anthologies and really like them…mostly. There are those few… 🙂 I’ve discovered great new-to-me authors by reading anthologies.

  13. This is going to be fun!!

Oh Anthologies is where I found a lot of new to me authors that I might have totally missed reading if it wasn’t for having to read them in an Anthology that I had gotten of an author I do read! This way I get a quicker read into theirs to decide if I want to read more. Too, they often have a story related to a series they do, and this way I can get more of a feel about the series. So for me, they are very positive to read Anthologies

  14. Lori

I don’t read that many of them, to be honest. I like longer books mostly – category length at the shortest, although I don’t mind shorter in ebook so much. Interesting, no? It must have something to do with the weight of the book in my hand. If I want a short story, I’ll usually buy an e-novella, cause it’s cheaper. What really gets my goat is when a part of a series is stuck in an anthology, making me feel obligated to buy it. Grrrrr……
