Through the Veil

Book description:

Found wandering in a field as a child, Lee Ross was given a name by the state and placed in a foster home–without anyone realizing that she wasn’t entirely human. All her life, she’s tried to dismiss the odd dreams that have plagued her, dreams of monsters creeping through the night and a man fighting demons by her side. But the bruises she wakes up with are all too real to ignore. . .

Then the man from her dreams appears–in the flesh. His name is Kalen, and he insists that her destiny lies in his world, the world of her dreams. To save their people, he mist convince Lee to give up everything she knows, follow her heart, and cross over into the Under Realm–even though once she does, she’ll never be able to return.

Day after day, Lee Ross awakens with bruises on her body that she can’t explain. Though she knows that she had vivid dreams, she can never remember them in the morning. All she has are aches and pains that she can’t explain to herself. She also has a vague memory of a man that she can’t seem to forget. Then the man appears in front of her…when she’s awake. Now Lee has to decide if she’s either crazier than she thought, or that her dreams weren’t dreams at all.

Kalen has known Lee for years. Appearing only in the direst of situations, Lee would turn up to fight, help his people only to disappear. Though most of his men believe that Lee is of their world, Kalen has long since realized that when Lee leaves, she really is disappearing. He also knows that Lee is the key in their fight against the Warlords from Anquar. He doesn’t know why, but he knows that his world will soon end unless Lee admits to herself that she belongs in Ishtan, fighting at his side.

When Kalen forces Lee to admit who she is, Lee finally leaves her world to join Kalen in his. While part of Lee has a memory of being in Ishtan and knows that she has the ability to fight demons, the other part refuses to believe that she is a witch with the power far greater than almost any other witch in existence. Training under a witch with whom she knows, yet doesn’t, Lee becomes stronger with each passing day.

Soon, Lee discovers a secret that could not only destroy Ishtan all together, but would most certainly destroy what her and Kalen are finally discovering they have together. Lee is willing to do whatever it takes to protect Kalen and the people of Ishtan, even if it means leaving him forever. However, there is more going on than even Lee realizes. There’s a traitor in their midst who is doing everything possible to thwart their efforts to protect Ishtan.

Walker does a great job of building the worlds of both Ishtan and Anqar. What could have become confusing and overwhelming was not. The love between Lee and Kalen was a powerful, tangible thing. Spanning dimensions, there seemed to be nothing that could tear these two apart. As a powerful witch, Lee was instrumental in their war against the demons and Warlords. Kalen had to fight the natural instinct to protect Lee and let her be who she was meant to be.

I really enjoyed this book and am highly curious to see where Walker takes this fascinating world that she has created.

4 out of 5.
