A Hunger Like No Other
Book description:

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he’s waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents — until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae — and their notorious dark desires — ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

This just might be my favorite paranormal series. I love how Kresley Cole keeps it fresh. I love how the series gets better with each book. Her back-to-back releases of Dark Needs At Night’s Edge and Dark Desires After Dusk prompted me to re-read the series from the beginning. If possible, this book is even better the 2nd time around. Or the 3rd or 4th.

Lachlain MacRieve has been prisoner of the vampire horde for years. Torture at the hands of the vampires has consumed Lachlain, until he smells the woman whom is destined to be his mate. Unwilling and unable to give her the chance to get away, Lachlain escapes his captors and heads to the Paris streets to find the one woman that is his. When he realizes that she is a vampire herself, his rage knows no bounds. Lachlain still can’t let her go, vampire or not.

Emmaline Troy has never left the safety of her coven or her Valkyrie aunts. Determined to find out about her parents, Emma heads to Paris where she was told they met. The last thing she expects to happen is for an enraged Lykae to virtually kidnap her. Nothing in Emma’s sheltered life has prepared her for dealing with someone that despises vampires as much as Lachlain does. Yet even though she fears him, Emma is still fascinated by this Lykae and the feelings that he invokes in her.

Lachlain knows that he will never let Emma go. He doesn’t tell her that, giving her a false sense of security in believing that he will eventually let her return home. When Emma learns that she truly is Lachlain’s mate and queen of the Lykae, she is at first incredulous and then furious. Not only are the Valkyrie feuding with the Lykae, but Emma will never be with someone that despises what she is as much as Lachlain does.

I was hooked from page one all the way to the end. The world that is created here is a fascinating one that I can’t wait to learn more about. Having been tortured for so long by vampires, Lachlain’s disdain of vampires is completely justified. He has a hard time reconciling Emma with the vampires that held him. Though Emma is definitely timid at the beginning, she more than learns to hold her own with Lachlain. I loved reading about how her coming to the realization that she is strong. She doesn’t need anyone to take care of her…not Lachlain, nor her aunts. A powerful person in her own right, Emma soon finds herself facing off against the most powerful vampire in existence.

This was an incredible beginning to an amazing series. For paranormal lovers who haven’t read this series, you are really missing out.

5 out of 5.

  1. I am just finishing up this book. A ton of fun! I think I am one of the only people in the universe not to have read this series, but now I get to consume it all at once.

The beginning, I have to say, roared like a freight train. I mean, it was fabulous.

  2. Sayuri

Yep, this has been on my TBR pile for ages and I haven’t picked it up becuase of the HIDEOUS cover. But half the day gone with no housework done proves I’m loving this book.

Such a shame when they cover gold like this in crap.

  3. I completely agree with Sayuri, the covers for the first few books are hideously ugly. The cartoon vampire with the dead woman, ugh! Thankfully, they are changing the covers. Not that the half naked man is much better, but I wld rather a hot guy with no shirt on than a cover that looks like it belongs in a comicbook!

  4. Rowena

I read this book last year and thought it was great, I have no idea why I haven’t kept up with the series though, this book was good though!

And I agree about the covers, so much better these days…
