Melissa‘s Guest review of The Lunatic Cafe, book four in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton.

“You don’t volunteer for slugfests with vampires. It shortens your life Expectancy.”

And you don’t fall in love with a werewolf. It interferes with your work. Especially when you’re a preternatural expert, like me. My business brings me up close and personal with all shapes and sizes of monsters. And not all of them want to kill me.

Take, for instance, the local pack of lycanthropes- that’s werewolves to you. A number of them are missing, and they’ve come to me for help. Maybe because I’m dating the leader of the pack. I’ve survived a lot-from jealous vampires to killer zombies-but this love thing may kill me yet…

Alright, I am still chuggin’ through the Anita Blake series. Lunatic Cafe is book 4. This book is right up there with the rest. In other words, I loved it.

As if Anita’s life isn’t busy enough, she’s dating 2 monsters to keep them from killing each other. Anita is dating a lycanthrope, Richard the werewolf. She is falling in love. Jean-Claude is still persistent and not going down with a fight. I guess you can have a big ego if no woman has resisted you for 400 years, right.

Lycanthropes are coming up missing. Marcus, the pack leader, enlists Anita’s help to solve the mystery. But, the bad guys are definitely not who I expected. The shapeshifters are being sold out, and Anita gets caught in the middle.

The plot was good. Different from the other books I’ve read in the series. Usually I’m a straight romance reader, however, I am really enjoying how the romance works around the action in this series. It seems to interfere at just the right times. I also like how all of the books are titled after an actual place in the story.

I enjoyed the whole book, cover to cover.
