Hero of the Month: Wes Baker.

It’s no secret that I adore this book. I think it’s my favorite Sarah Dessen book and since technically it’s still summer, at least in my hood- I wanted to do my own feature for the Summer of Sarah thing that went on at all of the cool YA blogs.

What I’m going to do is feature my favorite Sarah Dessen hero for this month’s Hero of the Month and it should be no surprise that Wes Baker is it.

Wes Baker is where its at.

He’s the guy that all the girls want to be with and he’s the guy that just has it going on. He’s not all about looks, he’s a substance kind of guy and how can you not love that? The way that his romance with Macy grew over the course of their book, The Truth about Forever was so freaking cute. It was a slow kind of romance, one that blossomed right before your eyes. They didn’t fall instantly in love with each other, their romance wasn’t a wham bam thank you ma’am kind of romance, it started off as a co worker thing then grew to a friendship thing and then blossomed into the love thing at the end.

My absolute favorite thing about Wes was the way that he saw to the heart of Macy. Their friendship was a real one and for some reason, this scene always makes my heart sigh:

“Isn’t it weird,” I said, “the way you remember things, when someone’s gone?”

What do you mean?”

I ate another piece of waffle. “When my dad first died, all I could think about was that day. It’s taken me so long to be able to think back to before that, to everything else.”

Wes was nodding before I even finished. “It’s even worse when someone’s sick for a long time,” he said. “You forget they were ever healthy, ever okay. It’s like there was never a time when you weren’t waiting for something awful to happen.”

But there was,” I said. “I mean, it’s only been in the last few months that I’ve started remembering all this good stuff, funny stuff about my dad. I can’t believe I ever forgot it in the first place.”

You didn’t forget,” Wes said, taking a sip of his water. “You just couldn’t remember right then. But now you’re ready to, so you can.”

He knew what Macy was going through and he was there for her when she was ready to start talking about her father’s death and I adored that.

Then there’s this scene, where we all get to see just how hot Wes is.

“A thump thump thump noise that was so unfamiliar, and yet I couldn’t quite place it. But I knew it. It was—“Mmm-hmmm,” Monica murmured, just as Wes came view into the path. He was running, his pace quick and steady. He was in shorts, his shirt off, staring ahead as he passed. His back was tan and gleaming with sweat.

God god!” she said finally, fanning her face with her hand, “I’ve seen it a million times but it just never gets old. Never.”

Hahaha, I love it!

When he answered Macy when she told him about all of the girls at the party and the sa-woon! I thought, Awww Wes is adorable!

“I don’t know. Just because someone’s pretty doesn’t mean she’s decent. Or vice versa. I’m not into appearances. I like flaws, I think they made things interesting.”

Wes is the ultimate guy and he’s hot to boot, you can’t get any better than that. Seriously so with the help of my 13 year old niece, Chaylene…here’s who we think would make an awesome Wes, with longer hair.

What a cutie!
