Review: Layover by Megan Hart

The first time she’d met him, he’d been blindfolded and at her mercy. Partnered in a trust exercise, Graham had been enticed by the allure of Julia’s voice, and eagerly followed her direction to navigate a maze. But as a warm friendship developed between them, their mutual attraction remained unacknowledged. And in the long-distance e-mail relationship that followed, their reticence persisted. Until the day a cancelled flight stranded Julia in Graham’s home town.

Both tried to play it cool, though each had approached their dinner date with intense anticipation. But the minute they stepped into Julia’s hotel room, the flood gates opened and their unfettered passion exploded. What really excited Julia, though, was that as in the trust exercise, Graham was great at taking direction. Because what really excited Graham was pleasuring Julia as no one else ever had.

First, I really don’t like that cover. I’m glad this is an eBook and not something I have to carry around or stare at all day. Something about the look on her face is..really not hot. Second, it’s a good thing we don’t judge books by their covers, because this was a great story.

One of the things I find extremely sexy is a man who’s willing to do anything and everything to keep his woman happy. Julia and Graham met a year ago at a work conference and really hit it off. After spending a week together it was obvious they were very attracted to each other, but Julia held off from sleeping with him because she was afraid she’d scare him off if he realized she liked to be in charge.

For a year they emailed and IM’d until Julia gets stuck at the airport due to bad weather and decides to call Graham. She finally admits to herself that she’s been stupid in allowing her fears to keep them apart. Graham is ecstatic and agrees to meet her for dinner right away. He’s been waiting a year for her to come around and he’s done playing.

I’ve never really thought much about the woman being the dominant. Obviously when I think about it at all I usually think of the man being on top, mostly because I’m really all about the alpha male. In the case, however, I found it very erotic that Julia was in charge. Not so much because of Julia, but because Graham was comfortable enough to let her take control.

Because they’d already been talking for a year I didn’t really have a problem with their connection. Julia figured it would only be a one night stand, but it was obvious even to her that the connection they had went deeper than just a one night would allow. Their encounter was very erotic and I really enjoyed it, but I was disappointed that it ended where it did. I wanted just a bit more time with them as a couple.

Still, it was a good story and one that tested my own personal limits – or at least allowed me to think past them.

Review: Chance of a Lifetime by Portia da Costa

Posted January 11, 2009 by Holly in Reviews | 4 Comments

The videotape shocked and thrilled her…and really turned her on. She’d found it in a small, out-of-the-way sitting room of Blaystock Manor, where she was working. Now everyone was away and she finally had an opportunity to watch at her leisure. There on the screen was the Marquis, her much fantasized-about boss, administering a very sexy spanking to some girl. The intense erotic sizzle she felt compelled her to begin touching herself. And as she lost herself in pleasure, she suddenly realized he’d entered the room and had been watching her. But embarrassment turned to excitement when he urged her to continue, then began to touch her intimately. It was only the smallest hint of what she’d witnessed on the tape, but she knew she had to have more…much more!

I think the true test of an author is often how well she (or he) can write a short story. It’s hard, I think, to convey emotion and depth in 60 or so pages. So far, however, I think Spice Briefs are a good example of when short stories work – and work well. This short by Portia da Costa is a perfect example.

Rose has take a temporary position at Blaylock Manor working for the marquis as he converts his old family home into a luxury hotel in order to bring some much needed income to his destitute family. When the gig is up she plans to head to the Caribbean to find her dream job working in a resort there in the warmth and sunshine – far away from the rainy cold of England.

While poking around the manor one day she found an old VCR and some tapes. Being the curious sort she popped one in and was shocked to see it was a homemade video – of the marquis, spanking a woman. Despite herself she’s extremely turned on by it and finds herself stealing away to watch it whenever possible. But she’s far from prepared for Christian, the marquis himself, to catch her. And even less so when he asks if she’d like to play with him.

This was a wonderfully well done erotic short story. Both Rose and Christian were very well written, their characters developed far more than you would think given the small word count. da Costa was able to convey their growing emotional attachment as well as the pleasure they receive from each other.

As for the erotism, spanking isn’t something that really appeals to me personally, but it was well written and erotic. Despite it not being my personal preference I found it to be well done.

If you’re looking for a short, erotic story, this is good place to start.
