Write What You Know?

It’s one of those bits of advice that is often tossed at newbie writers. Write what you know. Pish.

Stop and consider. If writers stuck with what they knew then many genre’s wouldn’t exist. There would be no serial killer books, cause who is going to admit to being one in order to write fiction? I’m pretty sure J.R.R Tolkein had not been to middle earth when he created his fantasy worlds. And I don’t know any real vampires, so I think it’s safe to say that most paranormal authors have not met the various types of creatures they write about. If we all followed this “sage” advice, heroes and heroines would drive desks instead of Lamborghini’s and many of the fabulous tales you’ve read would never have existed.

Do I know cowboys? A little. What I do know are country boys, so extrapolation isn’t too big a stretch. Most writers don’t start out as experts on a subject, but we often become one in the course of our research. We spend hours upon hours reading and sifting through information to suss out the tiniest details that will bring our stories to life.

Since I’m pretty sure most horror or mystery authors don’t have first-hand experience, I don’t worry about never having set foot on a ranch. I grew up in the south, I’ve ridden horses—hell, I fell off one at a full gallop—and I’ve been to a stable before. So, making the creative leap isn’t too hard. And thank goodness I was smart enough to ignore that advice!

Now, tell me about an experience you’ve had that could be used for a story. Maybe a family trip or some fabulous vacation. Or perhaps something that happened to you. Comment below and then be sure to enter to win prizes via the Rafflecopter form below (may be a link).

claiminghiscowgirl***Warning: This story contains one dominant cowboy and the lady that will test his control. It also includes spanking, dominance, submission, bondage, and anal sex.***

Cassie Truhart is too busy with life and the Golden Mustang Dude Ranch to worry about love. Especially since her fiancé dumped her for an easier life in the city. Elbow deep in horseshit, she never expects to meet a man capable of commanding not only her attention, but possibly her love.

Trent Jones agreed to a blind date to appease his pesky younger sister. He never imagined finding a woman that would rouse every dominant instinct he possessed, much less love. Good thing his real date cancelled at the last minute.

As Cassie and Trent indulge their strong sexual attraction, he must discover if one night with a cowboy is long enough for him to claim his cowgirl.

Excerpt

Cassie bent over and jammed the shovel into the smelly mix of hay and horse dung. The pungent odor hung heavy in the air as she flung the shovelful of mixture into the wheelbarrow. Almost done.

The streaming rays of sun licked the barn through the open door. Ownership of the Golden Mustang Dude Ranch was everything she’d dreamed of and more, with one small exception. Her ex-fiancé had ridden off into the sunset—without the girl. He’d lasted two months before declaring he couldn’t handle ranch life.

Cassie snorted. Ranch life.

The dude ranch was so far removed from real ranch life it wasn’t worth the effort to explain. The Mustang made good money from the guests that came for the atmosphere. Very few vacationers sought out a real ranch experience. They came to use the spa and lounge by the pool. In winter they came for the snow and the pageantry of Christmas. Most folks weren’t looking for anything more ranch-like than a short jaunt on horseback.

If this were a real ranch, the animals they cared for would be their life’s blood instead of relegated to ambiance. The last of the dirty hay landed in the wheelbarrow. Cassie wiped the sweat off her brow and set down the shovel. With a solid grip, she lifted the barrow and headed toward the compost pile. Hay and horseshit mixed with kitchen scraps made fantastic dirt. Back in the barn, she spread fresh hay in all the stalls she’d cleaned. The raspy rumble of a masculine throat clearing startled her.

“Shit! Do you always sneak up on people like that?” She returned to spreading hay.

“Sorry, ma’am.” He tipped his hat in a mingled greeting-apology.

“No worries. I was probably over-focused on a simple task.” She glanced back and smiled at him. Whoa. That was a real cowboy. Not some duded-up city boy. Worn jeans molded to strong thighs. His shirt fit him like it was made for him, and the Stetson on his head would have looked wrong anyplace else. She stopped spreading hay and faced the stranger. “Is there something I can do for you?”

“I was hoping to get in a quick ride. Feeling kind of antsy.” He let his gaze drift down her body in a slow, blatant appraisal.

SorchaMowbrayImageFinalNewSorcha Mowbray is a mild mannered office worker by day…okay, so she is actually a mouthy, opinionated, take charge kind of gal who bosses everyone around; but she definitely works in an office. At night she writes romance so hot she sets the sheets on fire! Just ask her slightly singed husband.

She is a longtime lover of historical romance, having grown up reading Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught. Then she discovered Thea Devine and Susan Johnson. Holy cow! Heroes and heroines could do THAT? From there, things devolved into trying her hand at writing a little smexy. Needless to say, she liked it and she hopes you do too!

Guest Review: Love Revealed by Sorcha Mowbray

Posted March 20, 2012 by Tracy in Reviews | 0 Comments

Tracy’s review of Love Revealed by Sorcha Mowbray

Lady Katherine Drummond plays by society’s rules, even after the Ton turns on her. Shunned by her peers, she keeps up appearances by day but allows her true self out in the privacy of The Market. There, in the arms of one man, she comes alive. So much so, she signs a contract to be his for six months. Despite never having seen his face and knowing him only as Sir, she fears losing her heart to the man who breaks through her defenses.

Lord Raymond Tarkenton, the Earl of Heathington, despises being one of the most sought after bachelors of the Ton. He could never ask a woman of his circle to submit to his sexual needs, and a mistress would never be an option. For now, one masked woman at The Market holds his undivided attention. When he realizes that his masked lover and Lady Katherine Drummond are one and the same, he must find a way to convince her that they are bound together by more than the straps at her wrists and the contract they signed. He must reveal himself and his love to her. But will she accept him for more than a sexual escape.

Lady Katherine Drummond has invitations into society but not many. Her late husband was known to have syphilis as that is what he died from and everyone assumes that she is infected as well. Since the marriage was never consummated there’s no chance that she could have contracted the disease. Because of her status she has discovered The Market. This is a place where she can go and receive sexual release under the cover of a mask and no one knows who she is. Her most frequent lover is a man she calls Sir. He is dominant and she loves it as she discovers a side to her sexuality that she didn’t know existed but is all for exploring.

Lord Heathington, I believe, feels that he’s almost a deviant for wanting to dominate his partner in bed and hasn’t gotten married because he wouldn’t want to scare off a wife due to his sexual appetites. He heads to The Market and discovers a woman that calls him Sir and he wants exclusively. He proposes a 6 month contract with the woman and she accepts. But when he finds out who’s behind the mask will he be able to accept her for who she is?

This was a short novella and an easy read. It had some great sex scenes that I enjoyed reading even thought I’m not a huge reader of BDSM. It was pretty much BDSM-lite and that was perfect for my reading tastes.

The relationship between Heath and Kat was strictly sexual at first until he found out who she was. I personally think that how he figured it out was a bit far-fetched but maybe that’s just me. I loved that he accepted her for herself but then there’s society to think of. At least Kat was thinking of them…not so much Heath.

The story was enjoyable and since it says that this is The Market book 1 I’ll have to see what comes next in the series.

What I Read Last Week

Posted February 21, 2012 by Tracy in Features | 8 Comments

Hi there!
I’m a day late with this but I’m finally putting it together.
Unfortunately my lovely 3 day weekend was spent taking care of a sick child (my youngest again) and heading to the urgent care. Luckily she’s better now and on the road to recovery but I think I might need 3 days off to recover from my 3 days off! lol
Since she wasn’t moving much we played a lot of games and watched a lot of movies while cuddled on the couch together.  (Unfortunately mommy couldn’t be too far away from her baby before baby started whining. :).) This weekend I saw (again): Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan (the live action one), The Prince of Egypt, Willow, Jumanji, Thor and A Series of Unfortunate Events. I think I’m movied out for a while. 🙂
My reading was a bit schizo this week as I had lots of little bits of time to read rather than long periods. Hopefully this week will be back to normal.
I started off with Sea Change by Darlene Marshall which is the book that I read for my TBR Challenge. It was a great historical – ship – with a cross-dressing heroine book. You can read my review here. 4 out of 5
After that it was I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella. The story with this one starts with our heroine, Poppy, looking for her engagement ring after a tea with friends. She then gets her cell phone stolen and because she gave out the number to everyone to contact her about the ring – which is a family heirloom from her fiancé – she’s beside herself. She then finds a cell phone in the trash that still works and since it’s finders keepers she keeps the phone. She’s not really willing to give up the phone even once she discovers that the phone belonged to a personal assistant and the man she was assisting needs it back. A fun and funny story. You can read more in my review here. 4 out of 5
My next read was for The Book Binge and it was a novella called Love Revealed by Sorcha Mowbray. This was the story of a woman who is on the outs with the ton because of the fact that her now dead husband had syphilis. Of course it is thought that she must have it too – which is untrue. She takes care of her baser needs at a place called The Market where she can play out her sexual fantasies – and those she hadn’t ever thought about before. There she meets a man who goes by the name of Sir who wants her as a long term partner. Little do they know that they know each other. The story was definite an erotic historical romance that was light on the romance. It was a good book but just too short. There were lots of things to work out between the couple and I just didn’t think they were fleshed out enough by the end of the story. 3.25 out of 5
After that I picked up Few Are Chosen by Storm Grant. I liked this story so much but I wish there had been more of it! lol The story is about two boys who are fighting demons with one going the traditional demon hunter route with the speech and all and the other going more street gang. You can read my review here. 4 out of 5
The Husband Hunt by Lynsay Sands was my next read. This is book 3 in the Madison Sisters series and the story was about Lisa. Lisa is in love with Robert who she practically grew up with. Robert only sees her as a little sister and Lisa goes back and forth with giving up on him and hunting for a husband then trying to make him jealous. I really wanted her to choose one or the other and stick with the plan. You’ll be able to read more in my review when I post it this week.
Another book that I read for The Book Binge was Not Wicked Enough by Carolyn Jewel. This was the story of a woman who was visiting a friend and falls for her brother. Only she doesn’t exactly fall…more like makes a slow slide into it. lol The book was really great and I’ll definitely let you know when my review posts. 4.5 out of 5
Happy World by Kiernan Kelly and Tory Temple was about a man who works at Happy World (kind of like Disneyland) as a groundskeeper. Kyle loves working at Happy World but would really like to get into the theatrical part of it and become a “character”. For now Kyle is stuck training Rory as a groundskeeper and Rory isn’t one to follow rules to the T. The more time the men spend together the more they attracted they come and eventually start a relationship. But there are people who are out to get one or the other and secrets that are kept and this all might bring the relationship skidding to a halt. The story was very sweet and fun. I really liked both men and the story was great. Thanks for the rec., Tam! 4 out of 5
Another of Tam’s recommendations was Grand Jeté by Diana Copland. This story is about an ER nurse, Jordan, who starts falling for one of his patients, Davis. Davis is a ballet dancer who has been hurt and then deserted by his boyfriend and his dance company. He has nowhere to go so Jordan offers to let him stay at his place since he’ll only really be around for about a day. That day…and some…is enough for the two men to get together and form a bond. But Davis has to go back to the west coast and when Jordan tries to contact him his cell is turned off. Jordan has no way to contact him and eventually resigns himself to the fact that he was a bit used. But was he? This was a great story. I loved Jordan and Davis and though the book is pretty simple it was very sweet and pretty darned hot all at the same time. 4 out of 5

Happy Reading!
