MR-New

Casee: December kicked my butt. The only words I read were out of a cookbook. The beginning of 2017 was a great reading time for me, so here’s hoping that 2018 is the same.

Holly: I logged 24 reads in December. I cheated a bit because a lot of those were short stories. I don’t care. I’m counting them anyway.

Man Hands by Sarina Bowen and Tonya Eby | 3.25/5
Judgment Road by Christine Feehan | 2.5-3/5
Law Man Short Story by Christine Ashely | 3/5
Merry and Bright by Kristen Ashley | 4/5
Every Year by Kristen Ashley | 3.5/5
Valentinos by Kristen Ashley | 3.5/5
More Pleasure Than Pain by Kristen Ashley | 3.5/5
The Return of Eden McCall by Judith Duncan (reread) | 4/5
Complicated by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.75/5
Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh (reread) | 4.5/5
Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4.5/5
Burn Bright by Patricia Briggs | 4.25/5
The Hookup by Kristen Ashley | 3.25/5
Spellbinder by Thea Harrison (reread) | 4.5/5
Kinked by Thea Harrison (reread) | 4.5/5
Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase (reread) | 4.5/5
Star Kissed by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
A Walk on the Cliffs by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
Fairy Balloons by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
A Small Fairytale by Nalini Singh | 4/5
One Night at the Refuge by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
Zoe’s Workshop by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
Weapon’s Training by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5
A Sip of Eternity by Nalini Singh | 3.5/5

My favorite read of the month was Burn Bright by Patricia Briggs. I love Charles and Anna. My least favorite was Judgment Road by Christine Feehan. I’m still deciding if my feelings for the book were marred by my expectations for Feehan as an author.

Rowena: December was such a busy month for me. I had a family emergency that kept me up nights and full of nerves that my reading suffered because of it. Things are a lot better now but I only managed to read 6 books in the entire month. Here’s what I read.

Love, Life and the List by Kasie West | 4.5 out of 5
Taking a Chance (Whisper Creek #6) by Maggie McGinnis | 3.75 out of 5
North to You (Journey to the Heart #1) by Tif Marcelo | 4 out of 5
An English Bride in Scotland (Highlanders #1) by Lynsay Sands | 3.75 out of 5
The Matchmaker’s Playbook (Wingmen Inc #1) by Rachel van Dyken | 3.5 out of 5
Complicated by Kristen Ashley | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the month is Love, Life and the List by Kasie West. It’s a contemporary young adult novel and I thought it was a cute and sweet romance.

My least favorite read of the month goes to The Matchmaker’s Playbook by Rachel van Dyken. The hero in that book was shallow and he was conceited and not at all appealing (outside of his gorgeous face and body) and I didn’t feel there was any real growth to his character so that was disappointing. I’m curious to see how it’s portrayed by Passionflix once the movie comes out.

Monthly Reads: November 2017

Posted December 4, 2017 by Rowena in Features, Giveaways | 9 Comments

MR-New

Casee: I had virtually no time to read in November. I should have realized how much time and effort it takes to remodel a house, but I didn’t anticipate the complete chaos. Anyhoo, my life is like a small serious of crisis that need to be diverted or solved daily. That doesn’t leave me much time to read because I need to sleep sometime.

Ride Hard by Laura Kaye | 3.75 out of 5
Ride Rough by Laura Kaye | 3.5 out of 5

Both books are from Kaye’s Raven Riders series. I really have enjoyed this series and am currently trying to read the third book. The third book is proving to be the best so far and I’m dying to get farther into it. Out of the two, Ride Hard was the better book to me, but I still had issues. If I ever review Ride Rough I can tell you what I can’t get past.

Holly: I had very little reading time in November, so I mostly just re-read Kristen Ashley novels.

Play it Safe by Kristen Ashley | 3.75 out of 5
Complicated by Kristin Ashley | 4 out of 5
Magic Mourns by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
Fairytale Come Alive by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
Golden Trail by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
Christmas in Kilts anthology | 2.75 out of 5 and DNF
Mystery Man by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
Law Man by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3 out of 5
Wild Man by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4 out of 5
The Gamble by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
Games of the Heart by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4.5 out of 5

My favorite new read of the month was Complicated by Kristen Ashley, but that’s not totally fair since I didn’t read anything but KA all month. Ha. My least favorite was A Highlander’s Hope by Terri Brisbin, the only story I read in the Christmas in Kilts anthology. I’m not sure if it was me or the story, but it didn’t grab me. I may try to go back to it (and the others in the collection) at some point since I’ve been in a weird reading funk lately.

Rowena: November was a busy month for me both at work and at home. My daughter is back in the thick of a basketball season, playing all over Southern California and things at work have picked up for me. That didn’t stop me from getting some books read. I’m really proud that I powered through a reading slump to get some great books read. Here’s what I read last month…

Changing the Game (Play by Play #2) by Jaci Burton | 4 out of 5
Hate to Want You (Forbidden Hearts #1) by Alisha Rai | 4 out of 5
Wrong to Need You (Forbidden Hearts #2) by Alisha Rai | 4 out of 5
Head Coach (Hellions Angels #2) by Lia Riley | 4 out of 5
Hard Cherish (Hard Play #1) by Nalini Singh | 4 out of 5
Bountiful (True North #4) by Sarina Bowen | 4.75 out of 5
Hooking Up (Shacking Up #2) by Helena Hunting | 4.25 out of 5
The Ones that Got Away (The Ones that Got Away #1) by Roni Loren | 4 out of 5
Roomies by Christina Lauren | 3.75 out of 5

My favorite book of the month is Bountiful by Sarina Bowen. I just adored this story to pieces. From Zara to Dave to seeing the Brooklyn Bruisers and the True North folks come together in this book, I just loved the hell out of it.

My least favorite read of the month is Roomies by Christina Lauren and that’s mainly because the beginning of the book dragged and I felt it took way too long for the story to take off. It ended up being a solid story and I liked it but it wasn’t my favorite.

This month, we’re giving away:

Bountiful by Sarina Bowen

Monthly Reads: September 2017

Posted October 3, 2017 by Holly in Features, Giveaways | 8 Comments

MR-New

Casee: None books. I just want you all to know I haven’t disappeared. I think I need book therapy.

Holly: September was a strange reading month for me. I started out craving contemporary romance and ended up reading most of Julie Garwood’s historical backlist.

The Will by Kirsten Ashley (reread) | 4 out of 5
Soaring by Kristen Ashely (reread) | 4 out of 5
The Time In Between by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.75 out of 5
Whiskey Sharp: Unraveled by Lauren Dane | 4 out of 5
The Secret by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
Ransom by Julie Garwood (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
The Prize by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
The Bride by Julie Garwood (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
The Wedding by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
The Lion’s Lady by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
Guardian Angel by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4 out of 5
Castles by Julie Garwood (reread) | 3.25 out of 5
Honor’s Splendour by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
Saving Grace by Julie Garwood (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
The Kingpin of Camelot by Cassandra Gannon | 4.25 out of 5
Temporary by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry | 3.75 out of 5

Aside from re-reads, my favorite read of the month was The Kingpin of Camelot. It was so much fun. I can’t recommend it enough if you’re in the mood for something light and sweet. King Midas 4Ever! I didn’t really have a least favorite this month. I didn’t enjoy Temporary as much as I thought I would, but it was still a good read.

Rowena: September means summer has officially come to an end and the school year has begun and with a new school year brings football! My family finally has someone playing under the Friday night lights and that’s where I’ve been spending most of my Friday nights.

I did manage to get some reading done. Loads more than I thought I would. Check it out.

The Final Score (Play by Play #13) by Jaci Burton | 4 out of 5
If There’s No Tomorrow by Jennifer L. Armentrout | 4 out of 5
Chasing Christmas Eve (Heartbreakers Bay #4) by Jill Shalvis | 4 out of 5
Duke of My Heart (Season for Scandal #1) by Kelly Bowen | 3 out of 5
The Wedding (Laird’s Fiancees #2) by Julie Garwood | 4.75 out of 5
The Prize by Julie Garwood | 4.75 out of 5
Saving Grace by Julie Garwood | 5 out of 5
Ransom (Highland’s Laird #2) by Julie Garwood | 4.5 out of 5
Only with You (The Best Mistake #1) by Lauren Layne | 4.25 out of 5
Made for You (The Best Mistake #2) by Lauren Layne | 4.25 out of 5
Ready for Wild (Grand Valley #3) by Liora Blake | 4 out of 5

My favorite reads of the month are probably my Julie Garwood re-reads because those will always be my comfort reads and I loved them just as much this time around as I have the other times I’ve read them. The Prize, The Wedding, Saving Grace and Ransom are just damn good reads. My favorite of my new to me reads were Made for You and Only with You by Lauren Layne. Those books were great, quick reads that just hit me in my feels. Both heroes wrapped me up in heart eyes and I just adored their stories.

My least favorite read was Duke of My Heart by Kelly Bowen. It was a good story but I didn’t connect with it nearly as much as I did the other books.

This month we’re giving away:

The Kingpin of Camelot by Cassandra Gannon
Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis

If you want to be entered to win, leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite – and least favorite – reads of the month were.

Monthly Reads: August 2017

Posted September 7, 2017 by Rowena in Features, Giveaways | 10 Comments

MR-New

Casee: I read none books. None. I’m detecting a problem here.

Holly: I had a pretty good reading month. I tried some new authors and revisited some older books. I read a total of 18 books.

Magic Waking by Eva Chase | 2.75 out of 5
Soul’s Blade by Eva Chase | DNF
Wildest Dreams by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 3.25 out of 5
The Golden Dynasty by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
Fantastical by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 3.5 out of 5
Broken Dove by Kristen Ashley (reread) | 4 out of 5
Midnight Soul by Kristen Ashley (reread) | DNF
The Time in Between by Kristen Ashley | 3 out of 5
Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4 out of 5
Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.25 out of 5
One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews (reread) | 4.5 out of 5
The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre | 3.5 out of 5
Gaslight Hades by Grace Draven | 4 out of 5
Born in Fire by K.F. Breene | 3.25 out of 5
Raised in Fire by K.F. Breene | 3.5 out of 5
Fused in Fire by K.F. Breene | 3.5 out of 5
So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks | 4 out of 5
Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie (reread) | 4.5 out of 5

My favorite read was So I Married a Sorcerer. It isn’t a perfect story, but I enjoyed the world. My second favorite was Gaslight Hades. I may have enjoyed it more, even, than So I Married a Sorcerer. So maybe they’re tied. My least favorite was probably Magic Waking. I didn’t hate it, but I was hoping for more than I got.

Rowena: August was the month where I got my crap together and started reading books. The summer came and went and I didn’t read much in June and July but August….August, I read. Here’s what I read last month:

Love in the Friend Zone by Molly E. Lee | 4 out of 5
Arm Candy (Real Love #2) by Jessica Lemmon | 4.25 out of 5
Links by Lisa Becker | 3 out of 5
Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses (Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James #4.5) by Lorraine Heath | 4.5 out of 5
Royally Screwed (Royally #1) by Emma Chase | 4 out of 5
Clean Sweep (Innkeepers Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews | 4 out of 5
Something about You (FBI/US Attorneys #1) by Julie James | 4.25 out of 5
Royally Matched (Royally #2) by Emma Chae | 4.5 out of 5
Royally Raised (Royally #2.5) by Emma Chase | 4 out of 5
Royally Endowed (Royally #3) by Emma Chase | 4.25 out of 5
Temporary by Sarina Bowen & Sarah Mayberry | 4 out of 5
Fallen Heir (Royals #4) by Erin Watt | DNF

My favorite read of the month goes to Royally Matched by Emma Chase and Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses by Lorraine Heath. Both reads were happy reads for me and I thoroughly enjoyed them both.

My least favorite read of the month goes to Fallen Heir by Erin Watt. I actually ended up DNF-ing Fallen Heir because it’s getting ridiculous and I knew that there was a cliff hanger and I just can’t deal with all of the Royals shenanigans so I put it down for good. Who knows if I’ll ever pick it back up again but right now? Nope.

This month we’re giving away:

Royally Matched by Emma Chase
So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks

If you want to be entered to win, leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite – and least favorite – reads of the month were. Monthly Reads: July 2017

Posted August 4, 2017 by Rowena in Features, Giveaways | 7 Comments

MR-New

Casee: This summer has been pathetic for me. I didn’t read one book in June and I only read one book in July. I’m hoping August will be better, but I don’t have high hopes. It’s only going to get better when my kids go back to school at the end of August. No more vacations, no more kids bothering me.

Here is my one book in July:

  1. The Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter | 3.5 out of 5

Holly: July started out pretty sad for me, but it really picked up toward the end of the month thanks to Angela Knight’s Mageverse series. I read 22 books.

  1. Seductions Gift by Angela Knight | 3/5
  2. Master of the Night by Angela Knight | 3.25/5
  3. Galahad by Angela Knight | 3/5
  4. Master of the Moon by Angela Knight | 4/5
  5. Master of Wolves by Angela Knight | 3.25/5
  6. Moon Dance by Angela Knight | 3/5
  7. Master of Swords by Angela Knight | 3.25/5
  8. Master of Dragons by Angela Knight | 4/5
  9. Vampire’s Ball by Angela Knight | 3/5
  10. Down London Road by Samantha Young (re-read) | 4.5/5
  11. Castle Hill by Samantha Young (re-read) | 4/5
  12. Wired by Julie Garwood | DNF
  13. Wolf’s Mate by Celia Kaye | DNF
  14. All I Ever Wanted by Luanne McLane | 2.75/5
  15. White Hot by Ilona Andrews (re-read) | 4.5/5
  16. Wildfire by Ilona Andrews (re-read) | 4.25/5
  17. Fairytale Come Alive by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 4/5
  18. The Gamble by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 3.75/5
  19. Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison (re-read) | 4.5/5
  20. Storm’s Heart by Thea Harrison (re-read) | 3.75/5
  21. Serpent’s Kiss by Thea Harrison (re-read) | 4/5
  22. Oracle’s Moon by Thea Harrison (re-read) | 4.5/5

My favorite read was Master of Dragons. I was intrigued about Kel from the beginning and his book didn’t disappoint. My least favorite read was Wolf’s Mate. I couldn’t even finish it.

Rowena: July was a sad reading month for me. I had so much free time and I didn’t read anything. Nothing was calling my name and the books that I picked up, I put right back down. I hope that I’m not slipping into a reading slump but my July numbers were ugly.

Here’s what I read:

  1. Ready to Run by Lauren Layne | 3.5 out of 5
  2. When It’s Real by Erin Watt | 4.25 out of 5
  3. The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare | 4.5 out of 5
  4. The Perfectly Imperfect Match by Kendra C. Highley | 3.25 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare because duh…it’s a Tessa Dare and I adore all of her stuff. This book was no different.

My least favorite book goes to The Perfectly Imperfect Match by Kendra C. Highley. I enjoyed the book as a whole but the beginning dragged and the characters acted really young (like younger than their actual ages), at least that was how it read to me.

This month we’re giving away:

The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare
The Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter
Master of Dragons by Angela Knight
