What Are You Reading? (+ J.R. Ward Giveaway)

Posted April 19, 2019 by Holly in Features, Giveaways | 6 Comments

Casee: It’s been a slow reading week for me. I haven’t had the time nor the inclination to read. I’ve been reading At the Pleasure of the President (The Perfect Gentlemen #5) by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake for about a week. It’s not that it’s not good because it is. I’ve just had a lack of concentration that’s been driving me crazy. I’m hoping to finish it by today. After that I plan on going back to Kristen Ashley and reading Wild Man (Dream Man #2).

I’ve actually listened to quite a few audiobooks this past week. I found that the first three books in Shayla Black’s More Than Words series were part of the Audible Romance Package, so I decided to give those a try. I have to admit that I did not enjoy More Than Want You (More Than Words #1) at all. I don’t know why I continued, but I did. I listened to More Than Need You (More Than Words #2) and enjoyed that far more. I was going to move onto More Than Love You (More Than Words #3), but decided to take a break. I then tried to listen to Shadow Rider (Shadow Riders #1) by Christine Feehan in anticipation of the release of Shadow Warrior (Shadow Riders #4), but the narrator was God awful. Like, terrible. After that I picked up Lost Hearts (Memento Mori)(Masters & Mercenaries: The Forgotten #1) by Lexi Blake. I’m not a fan of the heroine so far, but the hero is great. We will see how that plays out.

Holly: I’m in a strange reading funk. I want to read, but I don’t want to read anything new. I’m mostly just re-reading things. I read American Witch by Thea Harrison, which was fabulous. I adored Molly and loved the intensity of the romance. Then I started Ice Hot by Tracy Goodwin so I could review it with Rowena, but I ended up DNF’ing it. I couldn’t get into the story and the characters annoyed me. I read The Bride Test by Helen Hoang and it was so wonderful! I even got all teary eyed at the end.

Aside from that, I finished re-reading Wildfire by Ilona Andrews, then I re-read The Gamble by Kristen Ashley and Repeat by Kylie Scott (it was just as good in print, though Andy Ardnt as narrator really added something extra to the story).

I’m still listening to Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper. It’s slow going. I don’t think it’s the book so much as my lack of concentration. I plan to read Getting Hot with the Scot by Melonie Johnson next. I started it months ago but couldn’t get into it (it wasn’t the book, it was me). Wish me luck?

Rowena: I read some books! I started the week finishing up my re-read of The Shameless Hour (The Ivy Years #4) by Sarina Bowen and that was great. Then I didn’t read a thing until I read Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2) by Ilona Andrews and enjoyed that one heaps more than the first one. I also read Hook Shot (Hoops #3) by Kennedy Ryan and loved that one. Man, Kennedy Ryan writes the best emotional romances. So freaking good. I also started and DNF’d Ice Hot (New York Nighthawks #1) by Tracy Goodwin, that book just wasn’t for me. The dialogue, the immaturity of both the hero and heroine (the hero is supposed to be a veteran player in the NHL, mentoring younger players and I didn’t buy his whole deal) turned me off that I begged Holly to choose another book for us to read together….so we read The Bride Test (The Kiss Quotient #2) by Helen Hoang together and squee I’m almost done with it and I’m enjoying it so much. I should be finished with it on my lunch hour.

After that, I’ll be re-reading The Fifteenth Minute (The Ivy Years #5) by Sarina Bowen to finish up my re-read of the series and then I’ll be jumping into Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson #7) by Patricia Briggs because I fell behind in my reading challenges and I chose that book for my entry into this month’s TBR Challenge. I’m still playing catch up but I’m just happy to be reading on a regular basis now. Yay!!

Sola Morte, former cat burglar and safecracker, has given up her old life on the wrong side of the law. On the run from a drug lord's family, she is lying low far from Caldwell, keeping her nose clean and her beloved grandmother safe. Her heart, though, is back up north, with the only man who has ever gotten through her defenses: Assail, son of Assail, who never meant to fall in love--and certainly not with a human woman. But they have no future, and not just because she doesn't know he is a vampire, but because he is not about to stop dealing arms to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Fate, however, has other plans for them. When Assail falls into a coma and lingers on the verge of death, his cousins seek out Sola and beg her to give him a reason to live. The last thing she wants is a return to her past, but how can she leave him to die?

As a lethal new enemy of the vampires shows its face, and the Brotherhood needs Assail back on his feet, Sola finds herself not only a target, but a mission-critical force in a war she doesn't understand. And when Assail's truth comes out, will she run from the horror . . . or follow her heart into the arms of the male who loves her more than life itself?

What Are You Reading? (+ Shelley Shepard Gray Giveaway)

Posted April 12, 2019 by Casee in Features, Giveaways | 6 Comments

Casee: I’m reading At the Pleasure of the President (Perfect Gentlemen #5) by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake. I haven’t had much time to read this week, but when I was able to pick it up for longer than five minutes, I was instantly pulled in. Zack Hayes. Sigh. I also read The Savior (Black Dagger Brotherhood #17) by J.R. Ward this week. Review to come.

I’m listening to More Than Want You (More Than Words #1) by Shayla Black. I don’t have very nice things to say about this book at the moment. If I was a quitter, I would have already DNF’d this book. Alas, I’ve invested too many hours into listening to give up now, but I have a feeling it won’t get much better. I still intend to listen to the second book in the series just to see if this one is a fluke. I really do enjoy Shayla Black.

Holly: I finished Touch of Frost by S.E. Smith. I really loved how capable the heroine was, but the story kind of went off the rails near the 70% mark. Still, I enjoyed it enough to seek out more books by the author in the future. I ended up re-reading the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews. I finished Burn for Me and White Hot, and I’m almost finished with Wildfire.

I started listening to Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper, but I didn’t get very far before life got in the way. I also started reading American Witch by Thea Harrison, but didn’t get far in that either. I plan to finish both this weekend.

Rowena: This week, I read The Key to Happily Ever After by Tif Marcelo and Fumbled (The Playbook #2) by Alexa Martin. I enjoyed both books though I enjoyed Fumbled more. I adored TK, Poppy, and Ace. They were so much fun to read about and Alexa Martin writes a great romance so I’ll definitely be going back for more.

Now, I’m reading Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2) by Ilona Andrews and Hook Shot (Hoops #3) by Kennedy Ryan. It’s slow going because I’ve had a bunch of stuff going on this week but so far, I’m enjoying both books. We’ll see how that goes as I keep reading though. I’m hopeful. After this, I plan on reading Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson #11) by Patricia Briggs for my TBR Challenge read for this month. Wish me luck!

What Are You Reading? (+ Eva Langlais Giveaway)

Posted April 5, 2019 by Rowena in Features, Giveaways | 8 Comments

Casee: I’m reading Mystery Man by Kristen Ashley. Hawk Delgado tho. He’s alpha beyond all alpha. I’m really liking it so far. Even though I am liking it, I am trying to finish it quickly so I can get to The Savior by J.R. Ward. Then I am going to finish that quickly so I can get back to Kristen Ashley. I’m hooked. Addicted. There is no hope for me.

I just finished listening to Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews and holy hell. I love this series. I decided I’m going to take a break and go back to it even though I love it. I’m currently listening to Fair Game by Patricia Briggs. It is the third book in the Alpha & Omega series. I’m also loving this series. Audiobooks have been really good to me lately.

Holly: This week I finished Gunmetal Magic and Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews on audio. I’m taking a break from that series now and branching out into some sci-fi. I’m currently reading Dark Planet Warriors by Anna Carven. I started the audiobook, but I wasn’t feeling it so I switched to the KU version instead. So far it’s just okay. I’m about 30% in. I have hope it’ll pick up. I’m currently listening to Touch of Frost by S.E. Smith. I’m only a few chapters in by I’m really intrigued.

Rowena: So this week, I finished When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton and that was another emotional journey that I was super glad to be on. Beatriz Perez was just as awesome as I knew she was going to be and Cleeton continued to impress me with the adventure and angst of Beatriz’s story. So good. I also finished You’d be Mine by Erin Hahn, which was a pretty great debut by Erin Hahn and I’m stoked for that release.

I jumped into The Key to Happily Ever After by Tif Marcelo and Fumbled (The Playbook #2) by Alexa Martin so that’s what I’m reading right now.

What Are You Reading? (+ Karen Harper Giveaway)

Posted March 29, 2019 by Casee in Features, Giveaways | 11 Comments

Casee: I’ve been reading Sweet Dreams (Colorado Mountain #2) by Kristen Ashley for about a week now. I finally was able to really get into it last night as I’ve been traveling for most of this week. It’s quite a change of pace from the Chaos series, but in a good way. I’m really enjoying Lauren as a heroine. She’s very real. She has real problems, attempts to find real solutions, just real like that.

As I’ve been on the road, I’ve been listening to quite a few audiobooks. I finished Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2) and Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels #3) by Ilona Andrews. I’m now about halfway through Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels #4). I love this series. I love Kate, Curran, Derek. All of them. I even love Saiman. After this I’m going to to take a break and move back to the Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs.

Holly: I didn’t have much reading time this week. I’ve been listening to/reading Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews off and on all week and that’s it. I need some serious help in the reading department, y’all. I’m headed for a full on slump and I do.not.want.

Rowena: I thought for sure that I would knock all kinds of books off my TBR pile in the month of March and that just didn’t happen. Send help? Maybe. Maybe not. Hopefully, I get my shit together this week and things pick up.

I did read some books though. I finished The Right Swipe (Modern Dating #1) by Alisha Rai and you guys, the hero is SAMOAN!! He’s Samoan just like me and I was super thrilled about that though I didn’t love the book as much as I hoped I would have. Still, it was solid writing and I’m looking forward to reading more in the series. I also finished Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton, which was fantastic. It was emotional and it was intense and I’m so glad that I gave it a chance since it’s not normally the kind of book that I’d read. I’m much more of a fluffy romcom kind of gal but Next Year in Havana is much more intense and I thought it was such a well-written story. I also read You’d be Mine by Erin Hahn and that was a lot more intense than I was expecting. I thought it would be a lot lighter but there was a depth there that I wasn’t expecting but still really enjoyed. So all in all, though I’m not reading as much as I hoped I would, I still had a good reading week.

Right now, I’m reading When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton and that book is just as awesome as Next Year in Havana. I should finish it up today and after that, I’m going to jump into Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2) by Ilona Andrews and Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson #7) by Patricia Briggs. Wish me luck!

Format: Print
Genres: Historical Fiction
Pages: 368

Before Meghan and Harry, another American ‘princess’ captured the hand of an English aristocrat. Now, Karen Harper tells the tale of Consuelo Vanderbilt, her “The Wedding of the Century” to the Duke of Marlborough, and her quest to find meaning behind “the glitter and the gold.”

On a cold November day in 1895, a carriage approaches St Thomas Episcopal Church on New York City’s Fifth Avenue. Massive crowds surge forward, awaiting their glimpse of heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt. Just 18, the beautiful bride has not only arrived late, but in tears, yet her marriage to the aloof Duke of Marlborough proceeds. Bullied into the wedding by her indomitable mother, Alva, Consuelo loves another. But a deal was made, trading some of the vast Vanderbilt wealth for a title and prestige, and Consuelo, bred to obey, realizes she must make the best of things.

At Blenheim Palace, Consuelo is confronted with an overwhelming list of duties, including producing an “heir and a spare,” but her relationship with the duke quickly disintegrates. Consuelo finds an inner strength, charming everyone from debutantes to diplomats including Winston Churchill, as she fights for women’s suffrage. And when she takes a scandalous leap, can she hope to attain love at last…?

From the dawning of the opulent Gilded Age, to the battles of the Second World War, American Duchess is a riveting tale of one woman’s quest to attain independence—at any price.

What Are You Reading? (+ Catherine Anderson Giveaway)

Posted March 22, 2019 by Casee in Features, Giveaways | 6 Comments

Casee: I am currently in between books. I finished Ride Steady (Chaos #3) by Kristen Ashley yesterday and OMG you guys. Joker. Sigh. I know he’s absolutely going to be in my top five heroes of 2019. I adored him. I haven’t had time to start a new book since I finished it, but I plan to start Sweet Dreams (Colorado Mountain #2) by Kristen Ashley today. I love/hate Kristen Ashley. I’m not even questioning it (much) anymore. I’m binging her.

I’m listening to Getting Schooled (Getting Some #1) by Emma Chase. I love this book. It is hysterical! Garrett is so freaking funny. I love his inner dialogue. It’s all so perfect. I have zero complaints about this book thus far and I’m almost finished with it. I’m going to start listening to Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2) by Ilona Andrews after I’m finished with Getting Schooled. I plan on listening to several audiobooks over the next week as I’m going on a road trip. I’m excited.

Holly: I finished Magic Bites and immediately started Magic Burns on audio. Then went right into Magic Strikes. Curse Casee and Rowena for starting me down this path. I plan to take a break after this to read some new books, though. I haven’t read anything new since I finished xo, Zach by Kendall Ryan (it was pretty bad, the heroine got on my nerves something fierce). I’ve just been re-reading. I finished Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley and read the Curran POV shorts and 2 KD novellas. That’s it. I need to dedicate some serious time to reading this weekend.

Rowena: I’ve been in Utah this week for a short getaway from my real life. I’m spending time with my nephew Caiden who turned 2 yesterday. I thought I would have read a lot more since I’ve had a lot of time on my hands this week but that didn’t happen. I chose to spend as much time as I could with Caiden so I only finished Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton. I did start The Right Swipe (Modern Dating #1) by Alisha Rai. So far, it’s good so I’m hoping to finish it up this weekend. Wish me luck.
