Book Watch: If I Die by Rachel Vincent.

Posted July 15, 2011 by Rowena in Promotions | 3 Comments

No one wants to be this teacher’s pet . . .

Everyone else is talking about Eastlake High’s gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck, but Kaylee Cavanaugh has bigger things on her mind. Kaylee’s a banshee—her scream is a portent of death.

But the next scream might hit too close to home. Kaylee’s borrowed lifeline has almost run out.

Yeah—it’s a shock to her, too. So to distract herself from her own problems, Kaylee is determined to defend her school against the latest supernatural threat. That hot new teacher is really an incubus, who feeds from the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend’s delinquent ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren’t quite human either.

But Kaylee’s running out of time, and those who love her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

Soul Screamers: The last thing you hear before you die.

While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the last book in this series, I still adore the series as a whole. I read a review of this book this past week on My Overstuffed Bookshelf and when I came across this part of the review, my heart started pounding in excitement or anxiety? I have no idea. All I know is that I need to read this book.

Have you chosen Team Tod or Team Nash? Well, I thought I had until I read this book. Be prepared to have shocking discoveries and heartache as you turn each page. There are decisions to be made that can change the outcome for all characters involved that you won’t believe until you read about it. Secrets are revealed from numerous characters leaving quite a fallout on others in the book. Favorites of the series return, along with deaths to some you won’t expect. You will be cheering for characters you didn’t even know you wanted to cheer for.

Excerpt taken from part of Amy J’s review of If I Die.

I’ve already pre-ordered my copy of it but I’m more than a little anxious for it because I need to know what happens. I read on Rachel Vincent’s blog where she said that she never thought of a love triangle between Tod and Nash with Kaylee because there isn’t a choice for Kaylee since she has no idea about Tod’s feelings for her. I’m holding on to that for dear life and while I love Tod with everything that I am, I can’t for the life of me want Kaylee to end up with him. My heart belongs to Nash and I love that the romance between Nash and Kaylee isn’t perfect. I love that they have their problems that they’re working through and because of everything that they’ve been through, I want them to end up together.

*sigh*

And so that is why I’m looking forward to reading this book. I have to read this book. I need to know what happens and I need to know that Tod and Kaylee don’t get even closer than they’ve been getting so far.

For me, the love triangle was Kaylee/Nash/Sabine. Nash loved both of these girls and he made his choice in My Soul to Steal. To me, that’s what makes a love triangle, when someone loves two people and has a choice to make. There were quite a few times when I was scared (I still am) that he would lean the other way and I think that’s what makes love triangles so delicious. They keep you on your toes.

I’m hoping against hope that Kaylee ends up with Nash. I’m hoping with everything I have that what Tod said in My Soul to Steal is full of BS because I don’t buy it. You can read all about my thoughts on that in my review here.

Either way, this book comes out October 1, 2011 and man is time slowly inching closer to that release date. I needed it to be October 1st two months ago.

*sigh*

Team Nash for me! Mark your calendars readers, you won’t want to miss this one!

YOU WANT MY SOUL AND MY BOYFRIEND?

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

I DON’T THINK SO.

There is going to be a lot of spoilers in this review so I’m going to hide it in plain sight, so if you want to read the review, highlight it and you’ll be able to read it. This tiny paragraph serves as your warning that in this review, there be spoilers. Lots of them.

I had to take a few days to get my thoughts (and emotions) under control before I could even think about starting this review. So much went down in this book and it left me feeling anxious, worried and annoyed. There was a lot of couple drama in this book with the introduction of Sabine and while I didn’t hate her, I certainly was annoyed with Kaylee because of her.

Kaylee’s whole self righteousness got on my nerves a bit in this book and there were times aplenty that I had to remind myself that Kaylee was a teenager because man did I want to smack her a time or two (or three or four) while reading this one but as annoyed with her as I was, never once did I want her and Nash not to work their problems out and with Sabine now in the picture and very much going after Nash, I was scared out of my pants that they would somehow end up together.

That can’t be the case. Nash has to end up with Kaylee, no matter how much drama is going down right now, in the end…Nash must end up with Kaylee. I was terribly upset after the scene in which Tod tells Kaylee what he did about Nash and Sabine. I don’t hate Sabine, I never did (even when she was being a total b word) but for me, this series revolves around Nash and Kaylee. The both of them together and I don’t agree with Tod that Kaylee doesn’t need Nash, she’s strong and everything but she leans on Nash a lot and she needs him just as much as he needs her.

This book revolves mostly around jealousy and for me, I wasn’t a fan of it. I didn’t like all of the jealousy going around and because of that, I spent a great deal of this book pissed off. I was pissed off at Kaylee and her fixation on Sabine being the killer running amock around their school and I was pissed off that Kaylee was being so selfish where Nash was concerned. While I understood why she felt the way that she did but I hated the way that she used Nash. She wouldn’t forgive him (which is okay) but she turned to him when she needed him and he came running because he loved her.

What I want to know is all of that soul mate crap that Tod was going off about with Nash and Sabine…that’s not true is it? I will be a great deal pissed off if Nash ends up with Sabine because he can’t. He belongs with Kaylee and I hate being unsure of their love for each other.

I will say that it was great to see the whole gang again. From Tod to Harmony and Kaylee’s Dad, I loved seeing them a part of the book and I’m going to keep up the faith that Nash and Kaylee will work things out. This book is another good addition to a series that I’m already obsessed with so fans of the series should read this one because it keeps the Soul Screamers series going and while there wasn’t a lot of the paranormal aspect of the series in this one, it was still good.

I’m anxious to get the novella Reaper, which tells us the story of how Tod died and after putting this book down, I’m more than a little anxious for If I Die, which is the next story in this series. I hope we don’t have to wait until 2012 for that one.

The last book left off with my mouth hanging open and dragging on the floor. I couldn’t believe the twist the series took with the last book and man, I cannot wait to continue on with the series to find out what happens next. There’s new meat on the horizon? Who the heck is Sabine and I know she’s not trying to give Kaylee any trouble and Nash better get his crap together because seriously Nash? You’re so much better than all of this.

Rachel Vincent has done such a fantabulous job sucking me into her Soul Screamers series and I’m so anxious for this book. So mark your calendars dear readers because this book has a release date of January 1, 2011 which isn’t too far away.

Squeee!

Review: My Soul to Keep by Rachel Vincent.

Posted June 24, 2010 by Rowena in Reviews | 0 Comments

Genres: Paranormal Romance

Main Characters: Kaylee Cavanaugh, Nash Hudson, Tod, etc..
Series: Soul Screamers, Book 3

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.

Until something does.

Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And so is someone else…

Holy goodness, this book was the business!

From the beginning of the book to the end of the book, it’s non stop action. This book has everything I felt was missing in Book 2, My Soul to Save and just when I didn’t think I could take anymore, Vincent delivers even more to make me gasp, sigh and shake my head.

So many gasp worthy moments, characters that you thought you knew but knew nothing about and a betrayal that left your heart hurting long after you put the book down. Vincent did such a fantabulous job of engaging the reader and I don’t know if I could wait until January of 2011 for the next installment in this series. The way this book ended made me want to sell my right arm for a chance to read it now.

In this book we have Kaylee and Nash trying to figure out which demon is selling demon’s breath to teenage human boys, which they call the new drug, frost. Kaylee can’t stand by and watch the demon’s breath kill these young boys so once again, she ropes Nash into helping her find the culprit and then make the world right again…all without the help and aid of the grown up adults bean sidhe’s because they can’t know what’s going on.

The human boys that are addicted to “frost” aka demon’s breath are Nash’s friends, Scott Carter and Doug Fuller. Doug also happens to be dating Kaylee’s best friend, Emma so Kaylee has a vested interest in how everything goes down. She’s got to stop Doug from taking the drug and she’s got to find out just who in the hell is giving demon’s breath to the kids.

When I tell you that a lot of crap goes down in this book, I’m not lying. So much happens and your heart will hurt after all is said and done. This book has it all, it’s got angst, it’s got action, thrills and you won’t be able to put it down.

A lot of questions were raised in my head while I was reading this one. Like, why doesn’t Kaylee ever go to the adults for help? Why does she keep thinking her “I just found out that I’m a bean sidhe three months ago and I can do it all” butt can save the world? When did Tod grow so fond of Emma? Is anything going to happen between Emma and Tod? It’s Book 3, why doesn’t Kaylee kick Sophie’s butt already?

What, where, why, how? This book’s got it all.

This book is the perfect addition to an already fabulous series so if you haven’t started this series, WHY THE HECK NOT? You’re totally missing out. Rachel Vincent has definitely been bumped up on my authors I will cyber stalk the news part of their web sites for more information on my favorite series.

Yeah, it’s that good.
