MR-New

Casee: I read some very good books in July. I’ve decided not to go with volume, but with quality. I read eight books and most of them were very good. Most of the books I read were toward the end of the month because my family was out of town. It’s amazing how much reading time you can get in when there is absolute quiet.

  1. Shadow Game by Christine Feehan (re-read) | 3.5/5
  2. Mind Game by Christine Feehan (re-read) | 4/5
  3. Archangel’s Heart by Nalini Singh | 5/5
  4. Moonstruck by Lauren Dane | DNF
  5. Dark Carousel by Christine Feehan | 4.25/5
  6. The Secrets She Kept by Brenda Novak | 3/5
  7. The Bourbon Kings by J.R. Ward | 4/5
  8. The Strongest Steel by Scarlett Cole | 3.75/5

Obviously my favorite book was Archangel’s Heart by Nalini Singh. I love the Guild Hunter series. Holly and I were talking about the Guild Hunter series vs. the Psy/Changeling series at RWA and I felt guilty uttering aloud that I could possibly like the Guild Hunters more. Don’t tell anyone. The biggest surprise of the month was The Bourbon Kings. I was surprised at how much I liked it. It pulled me in and I loved the drama. I’m reading The Angels’ Share right now and it’s the same thing.

Rowena: July wasn’t the reading month I was hoping it would be. I’m still freaking behind in my Goodreads Reading Challenge, in all of my reading challenges if I’m being honest and that stinks. I’m going to try to do better in August so wish me luck.

Here’s what I read in July:

  1. Defending Taylor (Hundred Oaks #7) by Miranda Kenneally | 4 out of 5
  2. Hell Breaks Loose (Devils Rock #2) by Sophie Jordan | 3 out of 5
  3. To Have and to Hold (Wedding Belles #1) by Lauren Layne | 4.25 out of 5
  4. Just Kiss Me by Rachel Gibson | 3.75 out of 5
  5. Rock Wedding (Rock Kiss #4) by Nalini Singh | 4 out of 5
  6. You Before Anyone Else by Julie Cross & Mark Perini | 4 out of 5
  7. Back to You (Coming Home #2) by Jessica Scott |
  8. Ruthless (Lawless #1) by Lexi Blake | 4 out of 5
  9. For Better or Worse (Wedding Belles #2) by Lauren Layne | 4.5 out of 5
  10. Torch (Wildwood #3) by Karen Erickson | 3.75 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to For Better or Worse by Lauren Layne, the second book in the Wedding Belles series. I seriously loved this book and am loving the heck out of the series. It’s cute, it’s fun and the romance is hot! Josh Tanner rocked my socks and I adored Heather Fowler. This is a book that shouldn’t be missed if you enjoyed any of Layne’s other books. I adored it.

My least favorite read of the month goes to Hell Breaks Loose by Sophie Jordan and that’s more because I liked all of the other books that I read last month more. It’s a good book but there were a couple of things that I just couldn’t get over. Still, Reid was hot.

This month we’re giving away:

For Better or Worse by Lauren Layne (e-copy)
The Bourbon Kings by J.R. Ward (e-copy)

Monthly Reads: June 2016

MR-New

Casee: The summer is always a busy time for me. Between working and kids, it’s surprising that I have time to read at all. I’m not in a slump at all, it’s just finding time to read. Though my list isn’t big for June, I read some very good books.

  1. The Darkest Torment by Gena Showalter | 4.5 out of 5
  2. What We Find by Robyn Carr | 3 out of 5
  3. Dragonbane by Sherrilyn Kenyon | 3.75 out of 5
  4. Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon | 3.5 out of 5
  5. Into the Whirlwind by Kat Martin | 3.5 out of 5
  6. Because of You by Jessica Scott | 3.75 out of 5
  7. Back to You by Jessica Scott | 4.5 out of 5

My favorite book by far was Back to You by Jessica Scott. It was also the most emotional book I’ve read in some time. I loved it. I think the author did a remarkable job of writing what military life is like for families. Of course I could be wrong since I’m not from a military family.

Holly:Things have been crazy for me. I’ve had zero reading time. I did a lot of skimming this month, but I only managed to read 6 books cover-to-cover.

  1. Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen (re-read) | 4/5
  2. Steadfast by Sarina Bowen | 4/5
  3. Diablo Lake: 4. Moonstruck by Lauren Dane | 3/5
  4. Fairytale Come Alive by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 4/5
  5. Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 4/5
  6. The Return of Eden McCally by Judith Duncan (re-read) | 4/5

My favorite read of the month was Steadfast by Sarina Bowen. I had some problems with it, but oh man did I love Jude. My least favorite read was Diablo Lake: Moonstruck by Lauren Dane. I didn’t dislike it, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as some of the others I read.

Rowena: June was such a busy month for me that I’m surprised I got as much reading in as I did. My nephew came home from serving a two year mission in Nicaragua, my niece got married and then a handful of graduations and promotions kept my family in town and our house loud and just…busy. I’m looking forward to getting back to normal in July.

Here’s what I read in June:

  1. Allegiance of Honor (Psy/Changelings #15) by Nalini Singh | 4.25 out of 5
  2. For the Win (Perfect Play #1) by Sara Rider | 3.5 out of 5
  3. Bittersweet (True North #1) by Sarina Bowen | 4.75 out of 5
  4. Angel’s Blood (Guild Hunters #1) by Nalini Singh | 4.5 out of 5
  5. Smolder (Wildwood #2) by Karen Erickson | 4.25 out of 5
  6. Broken Prince (Royals #2) by Erin Watt | 4.25 out of 5
  7. Stay Until We Break (Hub City #2) by Mercy Brown | 3.5 out of 5
  8. The Billionaire Bachelor (Billionaire Bad Boys #1) by Jessica Lemmon | 4.25 out of 5
  9. Sweet Little Lies (Heartbreaker Bay #1) by Jill Shalvis | 4 out of 5
  10. Steadfast (True North #2) by Sarina Bowen | 4.5 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to the True North series by Sarina Bowen. I think I loved Bittersweet just a smidge more than Steadfast but both books were fantastic books. I’m thirsty for more from that group of characters but I can’t help but want a May and Zach pairing. Sorry Zara. You can have Kyle. 🙂 An honorary mention goes to Angels Blood by Nalini Singh though. That book was great too but I loved the Sarina Bowen books a little more.

My least favorite read of the month goes to For the Win by Sara Rider. I ended up liking the book but the characters, the main characters got on my nerves for a lot longer than the other characters I met and read about last month.

This month we’re giving away:

Steadfast by Sarina Bowen (x2)
Back to You by Jessica Scott

Monthly Reads: May 2016

MR-New

Casee: I did virtually no reading this month. My life was soccer. I couldn’t get away from it. Then there was a wedding. But mostly soccer.

  1. Rule Breaker by Lora Leigh | 3.5 out of 5
  2. Bengal’s Quest by Lora Leigh | 3.75 out of 5
  3. Shadow Rider by Christine Feehan | 4 out of 5
  4. Caged Magic by Jennifer Lyon | 4.5 out of 5

Like I said, no reading. Pathetic. The worst part was that I wanted to read, but I couldn’t. I wasn’t in a slump, but I couldn’t get to my Kindle at all. I love Jennifer Lyon. Yet the Feehan book was right up there. If I had to pick one or the other as my favorite, I would have to go with the Lyon.

Holly: I did a lot of re-reading this month. My life is crazy right now and I don’t have a lot of time for reading.

  1. Shadow Rider by Christine Feehan | 4.25 out of 5
  2. Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us | 4.5 out of 5
  3. Sh*tty Mom For All Seaons: Half@ssing It All Year Long | 4.5 out of 5
  4. Valentine by Samantha Young | 4.25 out of 5
  5. Rookie Move by Sarina Bowen | 4 out of 5
  6. The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen (re-read) | 4 out of 5
  7. The Year We Hid Away by Sarina Bowen (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  8. Blonde Date by Sarina Bowen (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  9. The Understatement of the Year | 4.25 out of 5
  10. The Shameless Hour by Sarina Bowen | 4.25 out of 5
  11. The Fifteenth Minute by Sarina Bowen (re-read) | 3.75 outof 5
  12. Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen | 4.5 out of 5
  13. The Deal by Elle Kennedy (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  14. The Mistake by Elle Kennedy (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  15. The Score by Elle Kennedy (re-read) | 3.75 out of 5
  16. Down London Road by Samantha Young (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  17. The Gamble by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 3.5 out of 5
  18. The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Marian Zapata (re-read) | 3.5 out of 5
  19. Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh (re-read) | 5 out of 5
  20. Cry No More by Linda Howard (re-read) | 5 out of 5

As you can see, I kind of went on a bit of a New Adult binge-read. I started with one and couldn’t stop myself from continuing. Aside from re-reads, I’d have to say my favorite reads of the month were Shadow Rider by Christine Feehan and Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen. Both were awesome, in different ways.

Since I mostly re-read, I don’t have a least favorite read.

Rowena: May was for the Psy/Changelings series by Nalini Singh. I had a plan. I was going to catch up with that series in pieces, not read everything at once but I couldn’t help myself. I just had to keep going and going and going until I was all caught up and right now, I’m sad because I don’t have any more Psy/Changeling books to read. sigh

  1. Troublemaker by Linda Howard | 4.25 out of 5
  2. Good Girl (Love Unexpectedly #2) by Lauren Layne | 3.5 out of 5
  3. 26 Kisses by Anna Michels | 3.5 out of 5
  4. From this Day Forward (Wedding Belles #0.5) by Lauren Layne | 4 out of 5
  5. Falling into Bed with a Duke (Hellions of Havisham #1) by Lorraine Heath (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  6. Bonds of Justice (Psy/Changelings #8) by Nalini Singh | 5 out of 5
  7. Play of Passion (Psy/Changelings #9) by Nalini Singh | 4 out of 5
  8. Kiss of Snow (Psy/Changelings #10) by Nalini Singh | 5 out of 5
  9. Tangle of Need (Psy/Changelings #11) by Nalini Singh | 4 out of 5
  10. Heart of Obsidian (Psy/Changelings #12) by Nalini Singh | 5 out of 5
  11. Shield of Winter (Psy/Changelings #13) by Nalini Singh | 4.5 out of 5
  12. Shards of Hope (Psy/Changelings #14) by Nalini Singh | 4.75 out of 5

This month we’re giving away:

Any book from the Psy/Changelings series
Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen (digital only)
Blood Magic by Jennifer Lyon

Monthly Reads: April 2016

Posted May 4, 2016 by Rowena in Features, Giveaways | 7 Comments

MR-New

Casee: Wow. Like Rowena, April was an incredibly busy month for me. Anytime I became overwhelmed, I turned to reading. I haven’t done that in a long time. It is something that makes this girl very happy. Seriously happy. I read 12 books, which is a record for me.

  1. Stars of Fortune (Stars Trilogy #1) by Nora Roberts | 3.75 out of 5
  2. Brotherhood in Death (In Death #42) by J.D. Robb | 4 out of 5
  3. Whatever it Takes (Grey Justice #2) by Christy Reece | 3.75 out of 5
  4. Blood Kiss (Black Dagger Legacy #1) by J.R. Ward | 4 out of 5
  5. Allegiance of Honor by Nalini Singh | 4.5 out of 5
  6. Troublemaker by Linda Howard | 4 out of 5
  7. The Beast by J.R. Ward | 4.25 out of 5
  8. White Lies by Linda Howard | re-read 3.75 out of 5
  9. Mackenzie’s Mountain by Linda Howard | re-read 4.75 out of 5
  10. Alone in the Dark by Karen Rose | 4.5 out of 5
  11. Dark Promises by Christine Feehan | 2.5 out of 5
  12. The Obsession by Nora Roberts | 4.25 out of 5

My favorite book was Alone in the Dark by Karen Rose. There is just something about her writing that pulls you in and doesn’t spit you out until the very end. My least favorite was Dark Promises by Christine Feehan. It was perfectly awful.

Holly: I managed to read 11 books this month. Yes, I’m still in a slump. I wish I’d get over this. I want to read, I just don’t know what. I keep picking up books and setting them aside. It’s so frustrating.

  1. For You by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 3.5 out of 5
  2. Phoenix Reborn by J.D. Tyler | 3.5 out of 5
  3. On the Edge by Ilona Andrews | 3.75 out of 5
  4. Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews | 4.25 out of 5
  5. Troublemaker by Linda Howard | 4 out of 5
  6. Own the Wind by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 4.25 out of 5
  7. Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 4.25 out of 5
  8. Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews | 4 out of 5
  9. Magic Stars by Ilona Andrews | 4 out of 5
  10. Magic Tests by Ilona Andrews | 3.75 out of 5
  11. The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata | 3.75 out of 5

My favorite reads of the month were Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews and Troublemaker by Linda Howard. I didn’t love Troublemaker as much as I’ve loved some of Howard’s book in the past, but it was so much better than some of her more recent releases. Bayou Moon was so great. I loved Cerise and William.

My least favorite read was probably The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. I didn’t dislike it at all, it just wasn’t as good as the others I read.

Rowena: April was a busy month for me and I didn’t feel much like reading for a lot of the month so my reading numbers are way down. Between how busy work was, getting sick for a bit and then all of Brenna’s basketball stuff on top of Relay for Life…it just didn’t leave a lot of time to read so I only read 8 books in the entire month. Yikes!

  1. The Natural History of Us (Fine Art of Pretending #2) by Rachel Harris | 3.75 out of 5
  2. Paper Princess (The Royals #1) by Erin Watt | 4 out of 5
  3. Branded by Fire (Psy-Changelings #6) by Nalini Singh | 4.5 out of 5
  4. Blaze of Memory (Psy-Changelings #7) by Nalini Singh | 3.5 out of 5
  5. Own the Wind (Chaos #1) by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 3.75 out of 5
  6. Summer of Sloane by Erin L. Schneider | 3.5 out of 5
  7. Sidebarred (Legal Briefs #3.5) by Emma Chase | 5 out of 5
  8. The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson | 3.75 out of 5

My favorite read of the month is hands down Sidebarred by Emma Chase. It was a novella so there wasn’t a lot of page time to wow me but she did and I loved seeing Jake, Chelsea and the gang again. It was cute, fun and steamy and everything I love in contemporary romances. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

My least favorite read of the month is probably Blaze of Memory by Nalini Singh. It wasn’t a bad book but its probably the book that I enjoyed the least. It took me a long time to read that book, Katya and Dev frustrated me for a good chunk of the book but I did cry like a baby toward the end so the book was good, just not my favorite.

This month we’re giving away:

Sidebarred by Emma Chase
Alone in the Dark by Karen Rose
Troublemaker by Linda Howard

Monthly Reads: March 2016

MR-New

Holly: I had a pretty sad reading month. Things are crazy for me right now and I’ve had very little time to dedicate to reading.

  1. Uncovered by Linda Winfree (re-read) | 3.5 out of 5
  2. The Return of Eden McCall by Judith Duncan (re-read) | 4 out of 5
  3. Gone From Me by Linda Winfree | 4 out of 5
  4. White Tiger by Jennifer Ashley | 4 out of 5
  5. Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley (re-read) | 4.25 out of 5
  6. Allegiance of Honor by Nalini Singh | 4.25 out of 5
  7. Fall Into Me by Linda Winfree (re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
  8. Fire Touched by Patricia Briggs (re-read) | 4.25 out of 5
  9. Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews | 4.25 out of 5

Not including re-reads, my favorite read of the month was a toss up between Magic Breaks, Gone from Me and Allegiance of Honor. All three were wonderful and I’m hard pressed to pick one over the others.

My least favorite read was probably Uncovered, but I didn’t dislike it. It just wasn’t quite as good as the others I read.

Rowena: March was a really good reading month for me. I got a lot of reading done and I’m pretty excited about that. Here’s what I read:

  1. After the Kiss (Sex, Love & Stilettos #1) by Lauren Layne | 4 out of 5
  2. Love the One You’re With (Sex, Love & Stilettos #2) by Lauren Layne | 4 out of 5
  3. Just One Night (Sex, Love & Stilettos #3) by Lauren Layne | 3.5 out of 5
  4. The Trouble with Love (Sex, Love & Stilettos #4) by Lauren Layne | 4 out of 5
  5. Once and Always (Sequels #2) by Judith McNaught (re-read) | 4 out of 5
  6. Because of Miss Bridgerton (Rokesby #1) by Julia Quinn | 4 out of 5
  7. Nobody but You (Cedar Ridge #3) by Jill Shalvis | 4 out of 5
  8. All Chained Up (Devils Rock #1) by Sophie Jordan | 4 out of 5
  9. Ignite (Wildwood #1) by Karen Erickson | 4 out of 5
  10. Undecided by Julianna Keyes | 4 out of 5
  11. This One Moment (Pushing Limits #1) by Stina Lindenblatt | 2 out of 5
  12. Dirty (Dive Bar #1) by Kylie Scott | 4 out of 5
  13. Eight Ways to Ecstasy (Art of Passion #2) by Jeanette Grey | 4 out of 5
  14. The Earl Takes All (Hellions of Havisham #2) by Lorraine Heath | 4.5 out of 5
  15. The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata | 4 out of 5
  16. Calling It by Jen Doyle | 2.75 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. This book surprised me. I wasn’t expecting to love it since the story itself is complicated and I wasn’t looking forward to losing one of the characters that I liked in the first book. But Edward and Julia’s story hit me in the feels and I sighed, I cried and I loved every minute.

My least favorite book of the month goes to This One Moment by Stina Lindenblatt. I couldn’t connect with either the hero or the heroine and they drove me right up the wall at every turn then when it was done, I still didn’t really care for either character. The story as a whole didn’t grab me and I was glad to have moved on after it was done.

This month we’re giving away:

The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath
Magic Breaks by Ilona Andrews
