New York Times
bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with a sizzling Lords of the Underworld story about an iron-willed sovereign and the somber beauty who melts him with a glance

Possessed by the demon of Misery, Cameo isn't allowed to experience joy. If she dares, her memory is wiped clean. With no other recourse, she sneaks into a land more fantastical than any fairy tale, determined to find the one man with the key to her redemption.

Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual rules his kingdom with a single unwavering focus: to build his army and annihilate his enemies. Nothing distracts him - until Cameo. He is relentless in his quest to make her smile and seduce her into his bed.

As dark forces conspire against them, threatening to destroy the fragile bond they've forged, the once-calm Lazarus grows crazed. Every heart-stopping kiss and wicked touch causes Cameo to teeter on the brink of happiness. But if she falls, she risks forgetting him forever

Cameo has longed for happiness, but knew it was out of her reach. She doesn’t remember details of her short time with Lazarus, but she knows it was special. Cameo is the keeper of the demon Misery and her demon doesn’t let her have a moment of happiness. Once she feels even a second of happiness, she forgets. Over the centuries, she hasn’t just forgotten the good things, she’s forgotten the bad. That devastates Cameo.

Though she loves her family, she knows it’s time to go her own way. She decides to make her way to Lazarus to get answers. She gets them as soon as she seems him. They had something. Something good. Something that was even great.

Lazarus is shocked to find Cameo in his kingdom. He’s even more shocked that she doesn’t remember him. He also surprised to realize that Cameo is his mate. Which isn’t a good thing. When the men in his family find their mates, their veins start to crystalize rendering them, well, statues. As much as Lazarus wants Cameo, he is not willing to give up his revenge for her. And oh does he have plans for revenge.

Cameo has no idea the impact she is having on Lazarus. All he is trying to do is seduce her. She’s having a hard time saying no. The only thing that is holding her back is that he barely seems to like her. It would help his efforts if he showed some sort of affection for her. As it stands, he seems to hardly tolerate her, only wanting her physically.

I loved this book, I hated the ending. I was really disappointed because up until the end, I was really enjoying the book. It’s the first book I read since May and I really couldn’t put it down. I adored Lazarus. After two thousand years of wanting revenge, he gave up everything for Cameo. Even his life.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Sunday Spotlight: The Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter

Posted July 30, 2017 by Casee in Features | 2 Comments

Sunday Spotlight is a feature we began in 2016. This year we’re spotlighting our favorite books, old and new. We’ll be  raving about the books we love and being total fangirls. You’ve been warned. 🙂

Sunday Spotlight

I adore this series. I started it years ago after three books were out. I immediately devoured them and waited impatiently for each book to come out. Gena Showalter writes strong men along with the women who love them. The women are amazing. They are a force in their own right. They will do anything to protect their men, even if they have to protect them from themselves. Sounds cliché, huh? The world building and everything going on in this series is amazing. She really has her stuff together because there really is nothing confusing about it.

Excerpt

“WAKE UP, SUNSHINE. EAT.”

Cameo blinked open dry eyes. Her body ached as if she’d just been in a car accident. A common occurrence. The demon had infiltrated her dreams, making her toss and turn and tense up hour after hour.

As she studied her surroundings, she arched her back and stretched her arms over her head. The first thing she noticed—a tent made from an unfamiliar animal skin. The only furnishings? The soft white furs beneath her. A few feet away, a small fire pit crackled, smoke wafting up and out an opening in the roof.

The scent of buttered eggs saturated the air and her mouth watered.

A fully dressed Lazarus pulled her to an upright position. He released her as soon as possible, as if she’d burned him. A scowl marred his rugged features, the gorgeous alpha male clearly riled up about something.

Had Misery sunk his claws inside the warrior?

Lazarus handed her a linen napkin and a plate with scrambled eggs. Scrambled green eggs.

“What, no ham?” she asked.

“We have no pigs here. Give me half an hour and I’ll acquire a nice Griffin flank steak for you.”

Griffin. A ‘γρύφων’ in ancient Greece. Half lion and half eagle. “No, thanks.” She took a tentative bite and moaned with delight. “I guess I shouldn’t have pegged you for a Dr. Seuss fan.”

“Who is Dr. Seuss? A past boyfriend?” He spat the word.

The corners of her mouth twisted. My, my, how suddenly his mood changed. “Perhaps he is. He does have a special way with words.”

Lazarus snapped his teeth at her.

“What kind of egg is this?” she asked.

“Sky serpent.”

Whoa! The nastiest creature in the realm had the sweetest, most succulent eggs? How was that fair?

She swallowed another bite and asked, “Is it going to cause my intestines to explode?”

“Only your loins. It’s an aphrodisiac.”

“Well, here’s to exploding loins.” Cameo dug in as if she hadn’t eaten in years. After licking the plate clean, she wiped her mouth with the napkin.

Lazarus watched with savage intensity, making her shiver.

“Ask me anything.” He sat in front of her. “I’ll answer truthfully, without fail.”

Did he need a distraction from his own loins? What would he do if she crawled into his lap? Resist the urge! One, he’d just offered her a gift. Learn more about him? Yes, please! And two, she needed a toothbrush STAT. No reason to scare him away with her morning breath.

Review: The Darkest Lie by Gena Showalter

Posted July 30, 2010 by Casee in Reviews | 0 Comments

Genres: Paranormal Romance

Casee‘s review of The Darkest Lie (Lords of the Underworld, Book 6) by Gena Showalter.

Forced to his knees in agony whenever he speaks the truth, Gideon can recognize any lie—until he captures Scarlet, a demon-possessed immortal who claims to be his long-lost wife. He doesn’t remember the beautiful female, much less wedding—or bedding—her. But he wants to…almost as much as he wants her.

But Scarlet is keeper of Nightmares, too dangerous to roam free. A future with her might mean ultimate ruin. Especially as Gideon’s enemies draw closer—and the truth threatens to destroy all he’s come to love…

I’m in the minority on this one, people.

Unsurprisingly, The Darkest Lie was at least 100 pages longer than any other Lords of the Underworld book. Everything that Gideon says has to be a lie or he feels extreme pain. Such pain that he is incapacitated. All that are familiar with this series know very well what I’m talking about when I refer to “Gideon speak”. For those that don’t, when Gideon needs to say something like “I’m tired and need to sleep” he really has to say “I feel like I’ve slept for a week and really want to out.” Half the time, Gena explained what Gideon was really saying and half the time she didn’t. It was confusing and I wouldn’t recommend starting out with this book.

In the last book, Gideon found out that he was (and still is) married to Scarlet–keeper of Nightmares. Only he has no memory of her. Not just that, but the Lords currently have Scarlet in their dungeon.

I liked this book because I liked Gideon. I’ve liked him from the start. I even liked Scarlet. She was an unorthodox heroine (to say the least) but not unlikable. What I didn’t like was all the mythology, Greek and otherwise. It was very confusing, especially on top of all the Gideon speak. It was kind of like reading one of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books, actually. I never thought of it that way until now.

Something interesting about Scarlet was that while she did affect people’s dreams in a bad way, she could affect the dreams of bad people. So she could affect the dreams of, say, Galen. That kind of backfires on her when Galen decides that he’ll go to Gideon instead of waiting for Gideon to come kill him.

Honestly, the most interesting part of the book was where Aeron, Amum, and William go to Hell to rescue Legion. It shows an interesting side to both Amum and William, something I’m really looking forward to reading more about. We also get to learn more about Strider, someone that I can’t wait to read more about.

My final verdict on this book is that while I enjoyed Gideon and Scarlet getting their happy ending, I enjoyed the secondary stories far more. I loved the progression of the series but I didn’t love the book.

3.5 out of 5.
