What I’ve Been Reading This Week

Posted October 13, 2008 by Tracy in Features | 35 Comments

Another week is gone. Where do they all go I ask you? I have not a clue.

Things here are good. My oldest started her tutoring this week. She’s going 6 hours a week – yes you read that right. No, you’re not hallucinating…I said 6 hours a week. It was her first week so she’s not complaining yet. She likes it and will hopefully continue. Cross fingers!

The youngest did great on her poetry reciting – at least I think she did since we didn’t get anything back from the teacher. I’m assuming she did by what she said. Thanks for all your kind comments – she loved hearing them (yes, I read them all to her).

Yesterday I realized I’m a fucking idiot a really good mom when I took the kids out Halloween costume shopping for 3 hours. Who knew there was a shortage of Batgirl costumes in my city? I sure didn’t! Needless to say they came home happy and I came home and drank. What? Like you don’t do that?

Ok – on to what I read this week:

I finished the other 3 stories in The Magical Christmas Cat. I liked them all. Erin McCarthy’s story, Christmas Bree, was a continuation of the story of the 3 witch sisters that she started in the An Enchanted Season anthology. It’s part of the Ohio’s Most Haunted Town series which includes the book Heiress For Heir that I read recently – but loosely. The Linda Winstead Jones story, Sweet Dreams, was interesting and a little out there but I liked it too. Then there was the Lora Leigh Breed story. I liked that one too. I liked Noble (Noble was also my favorite great-uncle and my youngest inherited Noble as a middle name!). Haley was a little annoying at first but she grew on me. I guess technically this story comes after Mercury’s War since they mentioned Mercury and his mate in the book. Just fyi for those Breed fans out there. I have to say that out of all 4 stories (these 3 and the one I read last week) Nalini Singh’s Stroke of Enticement was my fav.

The next 3 books were novella’s. First was Killer Curves by Regina Carlysle. A cute little story about a race car driver and the woman he’s loved for years but was off limits since she was his friends wife.

The next was I Spy Something Bloody by Josh Lanyon. I won this when Josh was on the DIK blog and it was fantastic. According to JL you either love it or hate it. I was definitely in the love category. Mark and Stephen had fallen in love and talked about the future but Mark got called back to his job as a spy for just one more job. It ends up being two years later when Mark returns and Stephen’s moved on. Great story. Read it.

The next was The Darkest Fire by Gena Showalter. This is actually a prequel to the Lords of the Underworld books. Geryon is the Guardian of Hell and Kadence is the goddess of Oppression. What a pair. But it’s a cute little story and a good beginning to the LOTU series.

Linnea Sinclair has been an author that I’ve been meaning to read but I just hadn’t done it yet. Sci-fi’s not really my bag but I thought I’d give it a whirl after she guested on the DIK. I got Games of Command from the library and it was a great book. I loved the characters and I loved Linnea’s writing even more. I think the next one I read of hers will be Gabriel’s Ghost since that’s been highly recommended.

My Prerogative by Sasha White was next. You’d all love to know what I thought of the book, wouldn’t you? Well, you’ll have to check out The Book Binge…um, sometime, (I’ll try to let you know when) and read my review. šŸ™‚

Last but not least was The Chosen Sin by Anya Bast. This book was kind of hard for me to read. Right off the bat it reminded me of another of her series, The Embraced, and I just couldn’t stop thinking of the similarities. In The Chosen Sin they have the Chosen who are vampires and feed off of blood and then they have succubare that get the “dark kiss” but don’t quite make it to Chosen status and have to feed on sex. In the Embrace series there are Vampir who feed off of blood and demi-vampir who don’t quite make it to Vampir status feed off of sex. Just too similar – I hate it when that happens. The story was ok but not as good as I expected. The sex in Anya’s books is always very steamy so there was no problem there. šŸ™‚ She does have great character and that’s always a plus too.

Happy Reading!

Put a little meow in their stocking this year with these tales of Christmas and felines-from beloved bestselling authors!
New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh and top-selling authors Nalini Singh, Erin McCarthy, and Linda Winstead Jones have a special gift for readers this year: heartwarming holiday stories featuring passionate romance, paranormal adventure, and a distinctly alluring feline touch. With four new stories-including one featuring Lora Leigh's genetically altered Feline Breeds-this is a collection packed with more surprises than Christmas morning, and more chills than the snowiest winter night...

I haven’t really been in the mood for paranormals at all lately, but I love Nalini Singh, and after her guest visit recently I decided I really wanted to read her entry in this anthology. As always, I was very impressed with her novella. But much to my surprise, I was equally impressed with the other three. It isn’t often that all the entires in an anthology work for me, but this is one of the few.

STROKE OF ENTICEMENT by Nalini Singh

I love the Psy/Changeling series. Just absolutely adore it! Singh has created an amazing world that’s easy to fall into. Even though this was a short story, it was still an excellent representation of the series.

When Zach is called to school because his nephew has gotten up to some mischief, he isn’t expecting to meet his mate, but that’s exactly what he finds in the young boy’s teacher, Annie. Annie, a human, has been sheltered by her mother after she suffers an injury in an accident as a child. Now that she’s gained some independence, she isn’t anxious to give that up for anyone, especially a man. But both man and leopard are determined to have her, and neither are willing to give up until they get what they want.

Zach is fun, caring and willing to do whatever it takes to make Annie see that he’s the one for her. Annie is a sweet woman who only wants to live her life on her own terms. She has a slight disability – leftover from a train accident she had in her youth – and struggles to be accepted as a whole woman. I liked that she didn’t let her injury stop her from living, and she also didn’t let her insecurities from it rule her life.

With wonderfully drawn characters and the storyline moves right along, I highly recommend it. Honestly? It made me want a Leopard Changeling of my own.

CHRISTMAS BREE
by Erin McCarthy

This novella is an entry in McCarthy’s Ohio’s Most Haunted Town series, which includes Heiress for Hire, one of my favorite contemps. For those of you who have read Charlotte’s Web, the novella in An Enchanted Season, an anthology that came out last year, you’re already acquainted with the Murphy sisters, who are witches. If you haven’t read Charlotte’s Web, I don’t think it will hurt you to read this story first.

Bree is surprised, and dismayed, when her sister predicts she’s going to meet a man in a pink shirt. She isn’t interested in having a man at all, but especially not one that wears pink. She’s shocked, however, when her sister’s prediction comes true and the pink shirt guy turns out to be none other than Ian Stone, her friend Amanda’s attorney and the man she’s been dreaming about – literally – for almost a year. They’re polar opposites and Ian is nothing like the men she usually dates.

Ian hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Bree since he met her in his office 9 months ago, and the fact that she’s been starring in his most erotic dreams since then isn’t helping things along. When a client of his shows an interest in Bree’s house, Ian figures it’s the perfect excuse to visit Bree and see if she’s everything he remembers. But neither are prepared for the strength of their attraction for one another, or for the deeper feelings they stir in each other.

This was really cute. I liked that though Ian and Bree weren’t looking for a relationship, they both acknowledged their attraction to each other and didn’t pretend like it was there. Bree was kind of prickly in the beginning, but it wasn’t long before she warmed up. Ian seemed kind of stuffy, but it wasn’t long before we saw the passionate man he tried to bury underneath all that starch.

I think the best part about this story is the intimacy of the characters. Little things Ian would do for Bree, or vice verse, that showed they really cared for each other. I did start to get annoyed with Bree toward the end of the novel for her reaction to something Ian says, but McCarthy was able to turn it around for me.

SWEET DREAMS
by Linda Winstead Jones

I believe this story is connected in some way to an existing series Winstead Jones has written, but her website isn’t very helpful and I’m not positive. This novella had a darker theme than the others. In this case, the magical cat in question was the villain.

Ruby receives a gift from a secret admirer at a neighbor’s holiday party – a beautifully carved jade cat. But once she brings it home, strange things start happening to her. She has vivid nightmares of a large cat stealing her souls, the statue seems to follow her where ever she goes and the walls themselves seem to purr menacingly. Her sexy neighbor Zane also starts spending more time with her, and she finds herself leaning on him more and more the crazier things seem to get. But is Zane everything he appears to be, or is he part of the growing threat against her?

I really liked this story. It was kind of nice to have a break and delve into something a little darker in this novella. Ruby owns a bakery and isn’t interested in having a relationship at all. She’s perfectly content to run her shop and live alone. I liked that. Too often we see heroines who SAY they’re content to be alone, but deep inside they’re really longing for someone.

Zane was an excellent counterpart for Ruby. He has a job to do and his attraction to her is getting in the way of it. He was chivalrous and noble, but his motives were somewhat suspect. It was great how even we as readers weren’t sure which side his loyalties fell on. The story was kind of creepy and dark, but there were moments of levity as well.

CHRISTMAS HEAT
by Lora Leigh

This novella is part of Leigh’s Breeds series. To be honest, I don’t really care fro the series as a whole. I only read about half of the first book before setting it down. The concept behind it never really appealed to me. So I wasn’t expecting much from this novella. I have to say, I really enjoyed it.

Librarian Haley McQuire overhears a plot against the Breeds at a holiday party and notifies Noble Chavin, a sexy feline she’s been attracted to for sometime. While she waits for the offenders to stand trial so she can testify, Noble keeps a close watch on her. But when her truck is blown up and her feline bodyguard is killed, Noble realizes he’s going to have to take the matter of safety into his own hands. He also can no longer deny that she’s his mate.

This is definitely the hottest of the four stories. The sexual chemistry between Noble and Haley fairly singed the pages. Haley wasn’t a limp dishrag heroine. She had guts and she stood up for what she knew was right. Noble was overprotective and certainly an alpha of the first order, but he still respected Haley and didn’t try to take over her life. There was some humor in the story, especially once all the Breeds descend on Haley to protect her, with some really cute results.

I found myself intrigued enough by the concept behind their mating that I might go back and try the series again from the beginning.

4.5 out of 5

Each story in this collection offers something different and unique. All of them were fun, fresh and sexy. I highly recommend this collection, whether you’re existing fans of the authors or completely new to them.

What I’ve Been Reading This Week

Posted June 23, 2008 by Tracy in Features | 15 Comments

It has been like Hades where I live. The heat has been anywhere between 107 and 113. Remind me why I live here again? I think they’re taking the Sunny Southern California thing a little far. Well, it just made me want to stay indoors in order to stay cool so I read A LOT this week.

We’re having a great time over at the DIK ladies blog. Don’t forget to hop over there daily to see everyone’s “About Me” questions and answers.

I read The Sun Witch by Linda Winstead Jones first. See below for review. I liked the book overall but didn’t like being left with unanswered questions. I guess they got me though since I do plan on reading the next books for find out what happend.

The Darkest Kiss by Gena Showalter was next. This is the second book in her Lords of the Underworld series. (I think there’s an ebook prequel too but I haven’t read that yet). I really liked this book. Lucien is scarred yet wonderful and I loved Anya’s feistiness. She wasn’t afraid to go for what she wanted and I liked that alot. We got some good insight into the other Lords’ futures too and that was great.

I read The Assignment by Evangeline Anderson last week and really liked Valenti and O’Brian’s characters so when I saw the 2 shorts, I’ll Be Hot For Christmas and Fireworks, she had with their characters I was up for reading them. I have to tell you I was more than disappointed. They basically had the same story lines – one of the characters is acting strange after a major event in their lives, won’t communicate…let’s pound em with sex to get em talking. I’ve read the story lines before, it’s just not my kind of thing…although it may be someone elses.

The 3rd installment in the Troubleshooters series is Over The Edge by Suzanne Brockmann. I have to tell you that I emailed Shannon M. to thank her for recommending this series to me. I seriously loved this book. I laughed, I cryed. Just an awesome read!

Dr. Feelgood by Alice Gaines. Heh. Funny name. Cute little novella. Lots of sex.

Finally got around to reading Through the Veil by Shiloh Walker (RAW author). I honestly wasn’t sure about it even halfway through, but by the end I was really liking it. I’m hoping there will be a follow up book with Morne! šŸ™‚

The Power of Love Anthology I won at Book Binge. 12 authors have written shorts about love. I really enjoyed reading it and it just kinda warmed the cockles of my shriveled little heart.

Happy Reading!

TBR Review Challenge: The Sun Witch

Posted June 18, 2008 by Tracy in Reviews | 14 Comments

TITLE: The Sun Witch
AUTHOR: Linda Winstead Jones

COPYRIGHT: 2004
SERIES: Yes this is the first in the Fyne Witch trilogy (aka Sisters of the Sun)
#2 The Moon Witch
#3 The Star Witch

Reason for reading:
The series was recommended to me over a year ago. I bought all three books right away but never got around to reading them.

Summary:
The three Fyne witches are sisters. For 365 years all Fyne witches have been cursed to never have a true and lasting love. Sophie is the youngest and the least powerful, or so she thinks, of the three sisters. She dreams for 3 nights of a man with green eyes. During her early morning swim she meets the man from her dreams and they share a sexual encounter. Sophie realizes how sad the man is and wishes him luck and well-being.

A year later the man, Kane, comes back to the pond where he first met Angel, which is how Sophie had had identified herself. Kane believes the woman from his dreams is not real. Kane ends up seeing Sophie at the pond, but sheā€™s also with their daughter Ariana. After learning of the baby, Kane wants to marry Sophie but she refuses. She knows herself enough to know that if she spends time with Kane she might fall in love and the Fyne witches canā€™t fall in love because the men they love end up dying before they turn 30.

During the time Kane is town to try to talk Sophie into marrying him a scorned suitor kidnaps Ariana and takes her to the Imperial Palace with instructions that if Sophie wants her child back that she will need to go to the palace and marry him.

Once at the palace the Emperor plans to marry Sophie as revenge on her father. Kane and Sophie need to save Ariana, but then they need to save themselves as well.

Thoughts/Opinion:
This book had a lot of stuff going on with many different characters.

There was Sophie who was not planning on loving just one man. Since the Fyne woman were not to know love she would just give her body to men and have children that way. (Ok ā€“ not the best of plans ā€“ but it worked for her mom so why wouldnā€™t it work for her?) She was a virgin when she went to Kane and then could not stop thinking about him. Once Kane returns, her feelings grow despite her attempts to quell them. Once Ariana is kidnapped she just wants her baby back. While she is on the journey to the palace to retrieve her daughter her powers, as well as her feelings for Kane, grow and grow. By the time she is at the palace she is learning to control those powers. She discovers that not only is she not the least powerful witch in her familyā€¦sheā€™s the most powerful. I truly loved Sophie. She was a quiet unassuming woman before she met Kane but love for her child and eventually for Kane makes her strong and capable. It sounds like a cheesy thingā€¦but the strength she gains from her love works for the story.

There was Kane who was a rebel against the Imperial Army and his quest is to unseat the Emperor. The Imperial Army kills his family and he is left for dead. He only wants to die and is lying by a pond hoping he can drink himself into a grave when Sophie finds him. After their sexual encounter Sophie, unbeknownst to Kane, wishes him good luck and well being. When Kane awakes he is happy, healthy and has great luck for 1 year. Unfortunately he canā€™t remember anything of his life before the day with Sophie. After a year and finally finding Sophie her sister takes the spell off. He remembers that his family is gone and is extremely mad at Sophie. He eventually gets over this ā€“ learning that he canā€™t live without Sophie after she is taken by an Anwyn, Rynā€¦which I got the impression of being a werewolf of sortsā€¦who thinks sheā€™s his mate. (This was kind of an odd way to introduce this character into the story and it was a very short part. I havenā€™t read the backs of the other books but Iā€™m guessing he plays a part in one of them). Kane saves Sophie and realizes he loves her. Kane is just nothing but hot. He not overtly sexual for most of the book but he just has this sensuality about him that just kind of oozes from him. Heā€™s very protective of Sophie and Ariana as he should be and I loved that.

Then thereā€™s the ongoing story about the Emperor and Liane. She is a concubine and assassin at the palace but also has the ear of the emperor. She hates him and wants nothing more than to be trusted, and not bodily searched each time she sees him, so that she can bring a knife to his bedroom and kill him. Later we discover that Liane is Kaneā€™s sister who was stolen from their home when she was 15. After all is said and done she ends up loving the Emperor. (I can understand that Liane has learned to have feelings for this man, but she wanted her freedom sooooo badly it was hard for me to see that she was given it and didnā€™t take it.) The Emperor also decides after hearing of Sophieā€™s sisters that they need to be brought to the palace but we never learn for what use. Because of Sophieā€™s powers Liane ends up being pregnant at the end of the book but weā€™re left up in the air as to what will happen since she is a concubine and of course not married. The entire book the Emperor would only accept a legitimate heir.

The end of the book kind of left us hanging which Iā€™m never a big fan of. Kane and Sophie and Ariana are all together and Sophie is pregnant againā€¦but the curse isnā€™t broken. The end states the fact that they will be trying to discover a way to break the curse so they can have their HEA but I wanted happy, happy, joy, joy! Kane also planned on rejoining his rebel forces to unseat the Emperor and Iā€™m wondering where this will leave Sophie and the babies since the chances of him getting killed are huge.

I love my HEAā€™s in my book. This book just didnā€™t provide that for me. Iā€™m glad that Kane and Sophie are together and in love but it just wasnā€™t enough. Although I didnā€™t think the curse would be broken in this book, since itā€™s a trilogy, I was definitely disappointed that more steps werenā€™t taken toward that end. Overall though I thought it was a good read.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again?
I read one other of her books, Raintree: Haunted, that was pretty good. I will read the other 2 books in the series because I was left with too many unanswered questions from this one.

Are you keeping it or passing it on?
I havenā€™t actually decided. I guess it depends on the other 2 books and how I feel about the series as a whole.
Did you enjoy the book? Yes

Would you recommend this book to others?
Not at this time, but again, maybe after I finish the other 2 books. I canā€™t imagine you could read the other 2 without reading the first.
Score: 3.5 out of 5

Anything else? Um, no.
