Excerpt: Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder

Posted May 6, 2009 by Holly in Promotions | 1 Comment

We’re very pleased to bring you this exclusive excerpt from Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder.

____________

Excerpt from STORM GLASS:
Characters: Main – Opal Cowan (glass magician)
Zitora Cowan (Second Master Magician)
Kade Stormdance (Head Stormdancer)

We stopped at the town’s square. Zitora pointed to an official-looking building that was three times as wide as its neighbors and had been constructed with large white stones. Iron bars covered the windows along the ground floor of the structure.

“I’ll talk to the authorities about our ambushers. To save time, why don’t you buy our supplies and I’ll meet you at the market.” She recited a list of items to purchase.

Kade slid off the saddle to join Zitora and I was left to take care of the horses. Without the Stormdancer behind me, the cool air on my back gave me a chill. I couldn’t help feeling left out even though I knew Zitora was right. We shouldn’t linger too long since we had another five days until we reached Booruby.

I found the market by following the scent of spiced beef sizzling over an open flame. Tying the horses to a nearby hitching post, I wandered through the market’s stalls. The open wooden stands had roofs tiled with shale singles and all had bamboo shades to protect them from the wind and rain. On a clear day like this morning, the shades were rolled up and tied to the roof.

I bought a loaf of bread, a hunk of cow cheese and a handful of pork jerky. After I finished shopping, I packed the supplies in our saddle bags. With my chore done, I strolled through the market again. This time I purchased a spiced beef stick to eat for lunch and lingered to examine the glass wares for sale.

A stall filled with decorative pieces drew my attention. I stopped to appreciate the craftsmanship of a delicate vase. The clear glass had a swirl of green bubbles spiraling around the tall flute. Sometimes bubbles or seeds meant a mistake, but the effect was stunning. The vase didn’t sing, but faint pops throbbed in my finger tips.

“Ten silvers for the vase,” the stand owner said. She was an older woman with gray strands streaking her faded black hair. Her lined face looked as if she had weather one too many storms.

“Did you make this?” I asked.

“No. Imported from Ixia.”

“Ixia?” The few pieces I’ve seen from Ixia had all been thick and practical. No popping. She wanted to inflate the price.

“Nine silvers, but not a copper less.” She waggled a slender finger.

“Do you know who made the vase?”

“I’m not telling you! You’ll go right to the glassmaker, undercut my business. Eight and a half silvers. Final offer.”

“Six,” I countered.

“Seven.”

“Deal.”

The woman muttered under her breath as she wrapped the vase and snatched my money. I hoped to find the artist and the best way would be to show the vase around to see if anyone knew who made it.

The woman handed me the package. I could no longer feel the pops through the thick wrapping. Even so, I felt certain the glassmaker was in the market. I hurried toward the east side positive I would find him.

A column of gray smoke rising in the distance must be from a kiln. The hot smell of molten glass drew me on until I passed through the market and followed a narrow cobblestone street. Convinced I would find the artist working in one of these abandoned warehouses, I peered through all the windows.

One of the buildings had collapsed and covered the road, creating a dead end. When I reached the rubble, all signs of a kiln disappeared. And my conviction fled. The air smelled of excrement and garbage.

I turned to go back.

A man blocked my way.

He held a sword.

Blue Eyes.

Guest Author: Maria V. Snyder – Glass Magic

Posted May 6, 2009 by Holly in Giveaways, Promotions, Reviews | 22 Comments

Last week Rowena and I had the amazing opportunity to meet Maria V. Snyder at a book signing in Upland, CA. She was so warm and funny, I really felt comfortable with her. She was lovely enough to agree to send us a guest blog, an exclusive excerpt and she signed 3 copies of Storm Glass for us to giveaway on the site!

Before we get to Maria’s guest post, I want to take a second to mention the Upland library, particularly their young adult division. I was amazed at the number of programs they offer for young adults. I really enjoyed speaking with the director and her assistant. If you get the opportunity or live close to Upland, be sure to visit the library there!!

Glass Magic

by: Maria V. Snyder

The idea for Opal’s glass magic formed when I wrote my third book, Fire Study. For Fire Study, I learned how to work with molten glass to accurately portray Opal and her family’s glass factory. Molten glass glows with a bright orange light that eventually disappears as the glass cools (turning fire into ice). When I worked with the glass, I wished that inner fire would remain. So when I wrote the scene where Yelena sees Opal’s glass animals for the first time, she comments on the inner glow. Well, in real life that wouldn’t happen, so to explain the inner fire, I had Yelena discover that the glow is magic trapped inside. Magic that can be used by other magicians but not Opal. Only magicians can see the inner glow and they use the magic to communicate telepathically with other magicians far away- like magical cell phones.

This wonderful discovery expanded and became one of the core plot lines in both Storm Glass and Sea Glass. Opal’s glass messengers are a major advancement for the people in Sitia and they can also find new magicians who may have been passed over because their magical powers are not traditional.

As a “seat of the pants” writer or “pantser” as we say in the biz – the unplanned discovery of Opal’s magic is the best part of writing process for me. Not outlining a plot can be scary, and I always spend the first half of the book worried I don’t have enough story for a full novel, and then I spend the second half of the novel worried I have too much story.

But when these golden nuggets are uncovered as I write and there have been lots of them– that, to me, is truly magical.

Storm Glass is book one in Maria V. Snyder‘s new Glass series, a spin off of her wildly popular Study series. This book is narrated by Opal Cowan, who we met for the first time in Magic Study (Study series, book 2). I don’t believe this book can be read as a standalone. Too many things that happened in the previous trilogy are alluded to. Readers who are new to this series should begin here at their own peril.

This novel features one adventure after another. Opal is first told she’ll be traveling with 4th Magician Zitora to help the Stormdancers because the orbs they store energy they harness from storms are breaking and killing them off. They need her to help them figure out what the problem with their glass orbs are. From there she’s lead on many other adventures.

Opal was an interesting character. In the beginning of the novel she seriously lacks self-confidence and has very low self-esteem. Because of things that happened in her past, this is somewhat understandable, but I think it went a little far. By the end of the novel she was showing signs of improving, but I feel she has a long way to go still. Especially after events the events that transpired here. I wonder if she’ll backslide?

Unlike in the Study series, the romance in this book is much more prominent. It’s obvious right from the beginning that Opal feels an attraction to Kade and her budding romance with Ulrick is at the forefront of the story. I really enjoyed Kade’s character and hope we find out more about him as the trilogy progresses. Ulrick I’m reserving judgment on for now.

View Spoiler »

The story is fast-paced and action packed, but at times I felt like things were moving so quickly we missed some of the character development. I am willing to look past though, however, because the series will be continuing. One of the characters I’m most interested in learning more about is Devlin. I hope once you read this (if you haven’t already) you’ll come back and tell me your feelings on him. There are definitely some shades of gray to his character.

I think the world-building was rich and colorful in this novel, and it was easy to get wrapped up in the characters and the world they live in. Despite the few issues I had, I couldn’t put this down and look forward to the next installment (Sea Glass, September, 2009).

Book Watch: Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder

Posted January 11, 2009 by Holly in News, Promotions | 5 Comments

Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder is the first book in her new Glass series, a spin off of her Study series. I was slightly disappointed with the way the Study series ended in Fire Study, but I’m still anxious to start her new series.

Storm Glass is slated to be released May 1st from Mira and now has a cover. Isn’t it beautiful? I can’t wait.

As a glassmaker and a magician-in-training, Opal Cowen understands trial by fire. Now it’s time to test her mettle. Someone has sabotaged the Stormdancer clan’s glass orbs, killing their most powerful magicians. The Stormdancers, particularly the mysterious and mercurial Kade, require Opal’s unique talents to prevent it happening again. But when the mission goes awry, Opal must tap into a new kind of magic as stunningly potent as it is frightening. And the further she delves into the intrigue behind the glass and magic, the more distorted things appear. With lives hanging in the balance, including her own,Opal must control powers she never knew she possessed…powers that might lead to disaster beyond anything she’s ever known.
