Lone Pine Lake’s resident playboy, fire captain Christian Nelson, is happy with his single-guy lifestyle. But when quiet, mysterious Jane Clark comes for a tour of the firehouse with her three small children, Chris is immediately drawn to the beautiful woman—even though he’s been burned by commitment in the past.

Jane’s been battling scars both physical and mental—having lived through a devastating house fire years ago—so she’s hesitant when her brother’s best friend, Christian, offers to help quell her family’s residual fears of fire. Jane’s mind is the epitome of once burned, twice shy, but her heart has other plans.

Despite her brother’s warnings about his friend’s playboy status and dangerous occupation, Jane can’t help but fall for the gorgeous fire captain. Can two scarred people find the strength to let go of their pasts to live in the present, when a lifetime together might be the sweetest gift of all?

Jane and her family were in a fire that her husband didn’t survive.  She was in the hospital for months and was burned over 30% of her body.  It’s been two years since that tragic accident and Jane’s back living in her hometown trying to be there for her three small children.  The last thing she has on her mind is dating.  That’s until she meets Christian Nelson – the fire captain.  Jane takes her kids to the fire station to try and cure them of their fear of fire when she sees Chris for the first time.  She knows she shouldn’t have lustful feelings towards the man but she can’t stop herself.

Christian is smitten with Jane from the moment he sees her.  He’s not sure what the pull is but after meeting her and getting to know her a bit he’s even more pulled to her.  He knows that she’s been through a horrible tragedy and it’s only been two years, but the chemistry between the two can’t be put aside.  He asks her on a date and she says yes!  But will Jane ‘s fear of Chris’s job keep them from finding a life together?

This was a very sweet romance.  Yes, the fire and the death of Jane’s husband were tragic but I felt the author tried not to focus on the horror of that too much, which was wonderful.  The relationship between Chris and Jane was easy and comfortable but also very heated.  The sex scenes were pretty much fade to black which was a bit disappointing but it was done well.

Jane and Chris made a fantastic couple together.  They talked things out and shared their feelings and I liked that about the book.  I also liked the way that Chris was with Jane’s kids.  He just acted like himself and didn’t try to ingratiate himself with them to win Jane over.  Jane’s big rambunctious family added another lovely element to the story as well.

Overall a nice holiday romance that made me smile.

About Cindi Madsen

Cindi Madsen is a USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance and young adult novels. She sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting, revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a pretty new pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music and dancing and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children.

About the author:

Barbara DeLeo’s first book, co-written with her best friend, was a story about beauty queens in space. She was eleven, and the sole, handwritten copy was lost years ago, much to everyone’s relief. It’s some small miracle that she kept the faith and is now living her dream of writing sparkling contemporary romance with unforgettable characters.

After completing degrees in Psychology and English then travelling the world, Barbara married her winemaker hero and had two sets of twins.

She still loves telling stories about finding love in all the wrong places, with not a beauty queen or spaceship in sight.

Guest Review: Wild About Her Wingman by Robin Bielman

Posted April 15, 2014 by Ames in Reviews | 0 Comments

Ames’ review of Wild About Her Wingman by Robin Bielman.

Playing it safe never felt so risky.

Erin Watters is her small town’s resident wild child–she doesn’t do boring, and after having her heart annihilated, she definitely doesn’t

do relationships. Her friends have other ideas, though, and when they throw down a matchmaking challenge, impulsive Erin can’t ignore it. Even when the annoyingly hot Troy Strieber accepts the matchmaker role…

As a rescue paramedic, Troy’s used to watching out for people. Never mind the bet he made with his buddy to play Erin’s wingman. But the more time he spends with the sexy, charismatic woman, the more he discovers a side of her she doesn’t let many see. Soon what started as an innocent game of matchmaking has them both thinking about the person right under their nose. But Troy’s a play-it-safe guy, and he won’t let a woman who lives for risk ever steal his heart.

I thought Wild About Her Wingman was a cute read.

Erin had her heart broken epically while in college and she’s been a bit closed off ever since. But it’s been a couple of years and all her friends are coupling up and she realizes she’s ready to meet someone. Troy gets roped in as her wingman one night over drinks. He’s actually set up a few people in the past who have hit it off and so Erin agrees. The bet Troy accepts is with his coworker for grocery duty (they’re firefighters). But things go awry the more time Erin and Troy spend together. She’s not supposed to fall for her wingman.

Erin is an outdoorsy, risk taking adventuress. She sky-dives, bungee jumps and what not. As Troy starts to fall for her, he despairs over this aspect of her personality. His previous girlfriend (and someone he was going to propose to) died in a climbing accident and he’s afraid to fall for someone else who courts danger. The accident also resulted in him developing a fear of heights, something Erin helps him with.

I liked how these two acquaintances become friends and eventually more. Living in a small town and being two years apart in high school, they know of each other but never really hung out. But now that Troy has moved back home due to family stuff, they’re getting to know each other. And they quickly become friends, turning to each other in different situations. I like how Troy actually followed along on the dates he sets up for Erin, because these men are strangers to her. Yeah Troy tends to play it safe after his girlfriend’s accident, but he doesn’t try to stifle Erin. And there’s a cute scene with a puppy. Puppies will get me every time.

The few love making scenes were fade to black but the sexual tension leading up to those scenes was very well done.

I also liked the secondary characters. I believe this is the third book in a series but I didn’t feel lost when it comes to the other characters’ stories.

My only quibble was the subplot with Candace, a not so nice girl that Erin knows. That kind of got dropped and I didn’t feel like it added to the story at all.

This sweet contemporary gets a 3.75/5 from me.
