We’ll be counting the books that we actually read and enjoyed and which books were flops.

In the meantime, here are the books that made our list.

Huge Deal (21 Wall Street #3) by Lauren Layne.
Kindle Edition – February 12, 2019

Even for a top-gun banker, temptation this hot is quite a gamble, in a sexy Wall Street romp from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne.

An alpha among the wolves of Wall Street, Kennedy Dawson rose to the top of the pack by striking the right contracts at the right times. But there’s one deal that’s been giving him a run for his money—a pact to never again let his assistant, Kate, get under his skin. She may be smart, gorgeous, and sharp as a whip, but she’s definitely off-limits.

Kate Henley isn’t a banker, but she knows a thing or two about risk management—specifically, about managing her attraction to her smolderingly sexy boss. She already fell once, and Kennedy showed no sign of paying a return on her investment. So when Kennedy’s brother starts pursuing her, Kate figures she has the best of both worlds. Jack is charming, rich, very attentive, and the spitting image of his older brother.

It’s also making Kennedy think twice. But to win Kate’s heart, he’ll have to broker the deal of a lifetime…and prove he’s worth the risk.

The Risk (Briar U #2) by Elle Kennedy.
Kindle Edition – February 18, 2019

A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy. THE RISK takes you back to the world of hot hockey players, feisty heroines, bro banter, and steamy scenes…

Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.

And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.

I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.

For every fake date…he wants a real one.

Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.

That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.

Devil’s Daughter (The Ravenels #5) by Lisa Kleypas.
Hardcover – February 19, 2019

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas delivers a scintillating tale of a beautiful, young widow who finds passion with the one man she shouldn’t…

Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he’s a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband’s life a misery, and she’ll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself…as none other than West Ravenel.

West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire…not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn’t bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She’s the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent—the most devilishly wicked rake in England.

Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past?

Only the devil’s daughter knows…

Gimme Some Sugar (Southern Eclectic #3) by Molly Harper.

Lucy Brewer would never have guessed that her best friend, Duffy McCready (of McCready’s Bait Shop & Funeral Home) has been in love with her since they were kids. Fear of rejection and his own romantic complications prevented Duffy from confessing his true feelings in high school, so he stood by and watched her wed Wayne Bowman right after high school. Wayne had always been a cheapskate, so it comes as no surprise when he suffers a fatal accident while fixing his own truck.

Even as her family and friends invade Lucy’s life and insist that the new widow is too fragile to do much beyond weeping, Lucy is ashamed to admit that life without Wayne is easier, less complicated. After all, no one knew what a relentless, soul-grinding trudge marriage to Wayne had been. Only Duffy can tell she’s hiding something.

In need of a fresh start, Lucy asks Duffy to put his cabinet-building skills to use, transforming the town’s meat shop into a bake shop. As the bakery takes shape, Lucy and Duffy discover the spark that pulled them together so many years ago. Could this finally be the second chance he’s always hoped for?

Auto-Buy Authors Casee Never Thought She’d Stop Reading…And Did

Posted November 29, 2018 by Casee in Features | 0 Comments

If you’ve been paying attention in the last couple of months, you will have noticed that Holly, Rowena, and myself have each taken to writing our thoughts on a shared topic and then posting them throughout the month. This month’s topic is about auto-buy authors that we never thought we’d stop reading until we did.

It makes me sad that this wasn’t at all a difficult list to make. A few of these authors were some of the first I ever read. Linda Howard was my go-to. I would have Judith McNaught on this list. As she hasn’t released anything in a bazillion years, I didn’t really think she applied. I also didn’t include Julie Garwood because I would most likely buy a historical if she ever decided to write one again.

I was really surprised when I sat down and put this list together. It was so easy. All these authors instantly came to mind with no thought whatsoever. These are authors that I literally stalked (not physically) to find out when a new release would be out. I would be so sad when I found out it would be a whole entire year until a new release. Now that feeling is just…gone.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Oh, SEP. Why did we have to break up? Kiss an Angel is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. Talk about needing the tissues. I have reread that book so many times that I have lost count. I just don’t know what happened to us. We stopped communicating. It was really Call Me Irresistible that wrecked us. A love triangle? I don’t know if that’s where you went with this book, but the summary sure made it seem like it. I am so against love triangles I would rather break up with you then read one.

J.D. Robb

I used to read all In Death as soon as they came out. I was thrilled that there were two books released a year. Soon enough that started being too much. Not to mention that it seemed that there was little character growth due to the fact that the books come out right where the previous one ends on the timeline. I’m not one of those people that want Eve and Roarke to have a baby. That obviously means the end of the series. I would like a little more relationship angst between the two. No marriage is as perfect as this one seems, especially when you have two people as damaged as they are.

Sherrilyn Kenyon

Back in 2000, I had my first child. This is relevant, I’m telling you. At that time, Kenyon told her readers that Acheron was going to be released in 2007. I looked down at the baby in my arms and tried to imagine him at seven years old. As much as I wanted Acheron, I didn’t want my baby to be seven. I think Acheron was finally released in 2008, but that was 10 years ago and my memory isn’t exactly stellar. I remember reading that 700+ page book in a day. I took that day off work. For real. Then something happened. The world got too complex. I could not keep up and I really didn’t even want to.

Linda Howard

I love rereading Linda Howard. I do read her new books, but I don’t rush to get them. I usually wait until they’re available from the library. I know that LH has had some medical issues in the past. I’ve heard rumors that her writing style changed after that, but I have no idea if that’s true. If it is true, I’m not even mad. No, but really, while some of these authors truly hurt, this one just makes me sad. I have met her a few times and she is such a lovely woman.

Lisa Kleypas

Lisa Kleypas was my favorite historical author after Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood. She had something special and I recognized it. Then she put out a contemporary. In first person. It was around the time that authors were doing that. Julie Garwood started writing contemps and a couple of other authors did it too. WHY? Why mess with perfection? Not only did LK put out a contemporary, but she put out one in first person. I admit, I did read Sugar Daddy. It just wasn’t for me. I think I read the Wallflower series after that, then I quit her.

Who are some authors that got bumped off your auto-buy list? Share in the comments!

Auto-Buy Authors Holly Stopped Buying

Posted November 27, 2018 by Holly in Discussions | 9 Comments

This is a difficult topic for me, since a lot of these authors are still wonderful. Some I outgrew, some I plan to go back to at a future time, some I may never be able to read again. I stopped auto-buying all the authors on Rowena’s list awhile ago. Some others I stopped buying are…

Hannah Howell

I adore Howell’s older highland romances. She writes fabulous heroines who are smart and plucky and always manage to save themselves. Plus, she does female relationships really well. But after awhile they all sort of blend together. While she’ll always have a special place in my heart, I don’t buy her new releases anymore.

Christine Feehan

Oh, Christine Feehan. Where do I begin? About 14 years ago, Casee sent me the first 4 Dark Series books and told me I had to read them. I stuck with that series for about 15 books until I gave up. I still gobbled up every Sea Haven and Leopard book she put out, though. Now that the Sisters of the Heart series is done, I think it’s time to say goodbye. I’m not interested in the MC books and the Ghostwalker and Leopard series just don’t work for me like they did.

Jill Shalvis

I used to love JS’s small-town contemporary romances. They always managed to hit the spot. It’s not that I’m really over her book, necessarily, just the small-town romances in general. I have a good number of her books in my TBR pile, but until I start reading them again, she’s off my auto-buy list.

J.D. Robb

Robb’s In Death series was a long-time favorite of mine. I eagerly awaited each release and read them as soon as they came out. I think I’m behind about 9 books now. As much as I love Eve and Roarke, I haven’t been in the mood to read them. I may go back to the series at some point, but for now I’m no longer buying them.

Julia Quinn

Y’all. This one is hard to admit, but it’s true. I’ve stopped buying JQ. To be fair, I’m really not reading historicals much at all lately. Even so, when I see a new JQ release I don’t immediately think “I need to buy that”.

Which auto-buy author was the most shocking for you to give up?

Books Holly Would Hate If She Read Them Today

Posted October 17, 2018 by Holly in Discussions | 5 Comments

While formatting some old posts, I came across some reviews I’d written for books in Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series. Reading my reviews, I started to wonder if I read those books today, would I still give them such high marks? Just reading through my reviews had me shaking my head. I gave up reading some authors years ago, because I know that, while I loved them in my youth, they’d never hold up to my reading standards now.

Chasing Perfect, Almost Perfect and Finding Perfect by Susan Mallery
Released 2010-2012
Publisher: HQN Books
Genres: Contemporary Romance
My Reviews: Chasing Perfect, Almost Perfect, Finding Perfect

Return to where it all began—the romance, the friendships, the community, the warmth and laughter of Susan Mallery’s New York Times bestselling series Fool’s Gold.

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Fool’s Gold, California, is a charming town like no other, where newcomers and locals alike find endless—if unconventional—opportunities to fall in love.

From Charity Jones, a city planner hired to create jobs that will keep the town’s men from moving away, to Liz Sutton, still trying to shed the stigma of being the girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and Pia O’Brian who, despite having a disastrous romantic track record and the parenting skills of a hamster, has inherited three frozen embryos, Fool’s Gold is overflowing with quirky characters, passionate moments and heartfelt emotion.

I really enjoyed this series back when, but just reading my reviews had my blood pressure up. I’m glad I enjoyed the books when I read them the first time. I definitely won’t be going back to read them again.

Almost HeavenAlmost Heaven by Judith McNaught.
Released: June 1, 1991
Publisher: Pocket Books
Pages: 384
Genres: Historical Romance

#1 New York Times bestselling author Judith McNaught crafts a powerful and unforgettable tale of two willful lovers in a twisting path of secrets throughout nineteenth-century Great Britain.

The Countess of Havenhurst, Lady Elizabeth Cameron, possesses a rare gentleness and fierce courage to match her exquisite beauty. But when she is discovered in the arms of Ian Thorton—notorious gambler and social outcast—her reputation is shattered. Thorton, rakishly handsome but with a mysterious lineage, embarks on a voyage to Elizabeth’s heart. Unfortunately, this journey is fraught with intrigue, scandal, and a venomous revenge. Destined for each other, yet wary of the other’s motives, Elizabeth and Ian engage in a dance of suspicion and passion that tests the very soul of their star-crossed love, from London’s drawing rooms to the mysterious Scottish Highlands. Will Elizabeth find true love or is Ian merely a ruthless fortune hunter at heart?

McNaught was one of my favorite authors back in the day. I was always swept up in her tales and so anxious to see what would happen. Almost Heaven was a particular favorite. Ian. Sigh. I know if I read it today the drama would be too much. As it is, just the memory of all the drama Elizabeth creates makes my teeth clench. I’m going to keep my happy memories of JM and stay far, far away from re-reading this book.

The GiftThe Gift by Danielle Steele
Released: February 5, 1996
Publisher: Dell Books
Pages: 288
Genres: Historical Romance

On a June day, a young woman in a summer dress steps off a Chicago-bound bus into a small midwestern town. She doesn’t intend to stay. She is just passing through. Yet her stopping here has a reason and it is part of a story that you will never forget.

The time is the 1950s, when life was simpler, people still believed in dreams, and family was, very nearly, everything. The place is a small midwestern town with a high school and a downtown, a skating pond and a movie house. And on a tree-lined street in the heartland of America, an extraordinary set of events begins to unfold. And gradually what seems serendipitous is tinged with purpose. A happy home is shattered by a child’s senseless death. A loving marriage starts to unravel. And a stranger arrives—a young woman who will touch many lives before she moves on. She and a young man will meet and fall in love. Their love, so innocent and full of hope, helps to restore a family’s dreams. And all of their lives will be changed forever by the precious gift she leaves them.

This is a book I read at a time in my life when I needed the story. Thinking back, I’m sure much of it was problematic, but at the time I didn’t see the flaws. I was swept up in the tale of this brave girl who was on her own, dealing with an unwanted pregnancy in the 1950s. The story truly touched me. There’s no way I’d feel the same if I read it today, but I’ll keep my fond memories.

My Review: Prince of Dreams

A wealthy and bitter exile, he most dangerous and desirable man in all of England, he burns to possess a proud, headstrong beauty who is promised to another. But winning Emma Stokehurst’s exquisite hand through threats and determination does nothing to fill the empty spaces in Nikola’s heart—until passion’s magic carries the handsome, tormented prince back to a bygone era of splendor and romantic dreams. For there his destiny awaits him in a distant life. And in one remarkable woman’s tender touch—achingly familiar but gloriously new—he must seek the elusive promise of ecstasy . . .and learn, at last, to love.

This is an old school novel by Lisa Kleypas. I love the last 1/4 or so of this book. Adore it, in fact. But the first 3/4 are pretty rough to get through (and yes, Nikolai did cheat ::wince::). I don’t know that the last 1/4 would make up for all the terrible if I read it now.

Night PlayNight Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Released: August 1, 2004
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Pages: 384
Genres: Contemporary Romance

Bride McTierney has had it with men. They’re cheap, self-centered, and never love her for who she is. But though she prides herself on being independent, deep down she still yearns for a knight in shining armor.

She just never expected her knight in shining armor to have a shiny coat of fur…

Deadly and tortured, Vane Kattalakis isn’t what he seems. Most women lament that their boyfriends are dogs. In Bride’s case, hers is a wolf. A Were-Hunter wolf. Wanted dead by his enemies, Vane isn’t looking for a mate. But the Fates have marked Bride as his. Now he has three weeks to either convince Bride that the supernatural is real or he will spend the rest of his life neutered–something no self-respecting wolf can accept…

But how does a wolf convince a human to trust him with her life when his enemies are out to end his? In the world of the Were-Hunters, it really is dog-eat-dog. And only one alpha male can win.

I loved Bride and Vane back in the day. Adored them. I loved how petty Vane was, getting back at Bride’s ex. How cute they were together, all of it. But I can’t imagine reading the book now and feeling the same way. I grew out of SK some time back.

Books Rowena Would Hate If She Read Them Now

Posted October 10, 2018 by Rowena in Discussions | 7 Comments

This month, Holly, Casee and I are sharing the books we liked back in the day that we would probably hate if we read them now. You know, the books that used to make our hearts race and then sigh happily but because we’re older, we’re different and our tastes have changed, we know that if we were to try reading these books now, our reading experience would not be the same.

When I first started reading romances, I was young and I loved historical romances. They were my main love and I loved re-reading Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught and Linda Howard over and over again. These days, my most read genre is contemporary. I am drawn to the more modern romances because I connect more with them. I still love historicals but I don’t read nearly as many of them as I used.

I’m also a different reader now. I used to have such patience with characters and storylines. I used to never DNF books. I read every book that I picked up from beginning to end but becoming a book blogger has changed that for me. I don’t have the time or the patience to continue a book that I just do not care for. Life is too short to waste time on books that I’m not invested in.

These changes in myself led me to this list. Check it out.

Virgin River

Virgin River by Robyn Carr

Genres: Contemporary Romance
Pages: 386
My Review: Virgin River

“Wanted: Midwife/nurse practitioner in Virgin River, population six hundred. Make a difference against the backdrop of towering California redwoods and crystal-clear rivers. Rent-free cabin included.” When the recently widowed Melinda Monroe sees this ad she quickly decides that the remote mountain town of Virgin River might be the perfect place to escape her heartache, and to reenergize the nursing career she loves. But her high hopes are dashed within an hour of arriving: the cabin is a dump, the roads are treacherous and the local doctor wants nothing to do with her. Realizing she’s made a huge mistake, Mel decides to leave town the following morning.

But a tiny baby, abandoned on a front porch, changes her plans…and a former marine cements them into place.

Melinda Monroe may have come to Virgin River looking for an escape, but instead, she finds her home.

I used to love small town romances but aside from a series or two that I’m mostly reading for the authors themselves and not the small towns, I don’t read them very often. I gave up the Virgin River series after a handful of books in the beginning and what I remember not caring about is all of the cheesy nosiness of everyone in town. If I read this book now, I’d want to rip my hair out. So it just figures that Netflix announces that they’re bringing the Virgin River stories to life in a short series, right? Ehh.

Only His by Susan Mallery

My Review: Only His

Wedding bells are ringing in Fool’s Gold, but not for Nevada Hendrix. Her triplet sisters are engaged, and even her mother has a more active love life than she does. Determined to make a fresh start, she applies for her dream job, only to discover that her new boss is her first love. Maybe she could overlook the fact that they’ve seen each other naked, but she’ll never forget the way he broke her heart.

Tucker Janack agrees to Nevada’s “business only” ground rules. After all, love is a trap that the construction millionaire has avoided his whole life. But when great business partners turn out to be so much more, every rule gets broken. Will either of them be willing to try again…or will their past get in the way?

This book is one of the triplets books from the Fool’s Gold series by Susan Mallery and I don’t remember much about the romance itself but I don’t think I’ll ever forget how cheesy everything else was in the book. All of the happy couples doting on each other, the pregnancies and just over the top happiness. You’d think it would be a good thing but if I were to read this book again, I’d hate it. I’d probably throw up. All of that cheesy happiness would grate on my nerves so I’ll probably never read this again.

The Best of Someone Else’s Life by Kerry Reichs
Released on October 13, 2009
Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks
Genres: Contemporary Romance
Pages: 431
My Review: The Best Day of Someone Else’s Life

Despite being cursed with a boy’s name, Kevin “Vi” Connelly is seriously female and a committed romantic. The affliction hit at the tender age of six when she was handed a basket of flower petals and ensnared by the “marry-tale.” The thrill, the attention, the big white dress—it’s the Best Day of Your Life, and it’s seriously addictive. But at twenty-seven, with a closetful of pricey bridesmaid dresses she’ll never wear again, a trunkful of embarrassing memories, and an empty bank account from paying for it all, the illusion of matrimony as the Answer to Everything begins to fray. As her friends’ choices don’t provide answers, and her family confuses her more, Vi faces off against her eminently untrustworthy boyfriend and the veracity of the BDOYL.

Eleven weddings in eighteen months would send any sane woman either over the edge or scurrying for the altar. But as reality separates from illusion, Vi learns that letting go of someone else’s story to write your own may be harder than buying the myth, but just might help her make the right choices for herself.

I remember enjoying this book back when I read it but reading through my review, I don’t think I’d stomach reading it again now. I do remember being confused because there were so many characters introduced and it was a bit of a bother to keep them all straight in my head. I don’t think that would slide so smoothly with me now and I just have no interest in this kind of book anymore.

Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught
Released on January 1, 1991
Publisher: Pocket Books
Genres: Historical Romance
Pages: 538
My Review: Whitney, My Love

Under the dark, languorous eyes of Clayton Westmoreland, the Duke of Claymore, Whitney Stone grew from a saucy hoyden into a ravishingly sensual woman. Fresh from her triumphs in Paris society, she returned to England to win the heart of Paul, her childhood love … only to be bargained away by her bankrupt father to the handsome, arrogant duke.

Outraged, she defies her new lord. But even as his smoldering passion seduces her into a gathering storm of desire, Whitney cannot, will not, relinquish her dream of perfect love.

As much as I love Judith McNaught’s older stuff, I don’t think that this particular book would go over well for me if I were to read it now. Between that scene and Whitney’s personality, I just don’t think it would work for me. This was almost one of my least favorite McNaught books and if I were to read this one again, I know that it would shoot straight to the top of my I HATE THESE BOOKS list so I don’t think I’d let myself go there again. Nope. Just, nope.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Released on July 18, 2007
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Genres: Paranormal Romance
Pages: 513
My Review: Twilight

Isabella Swan’s move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger. Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

Oh man, I used to love the hell out of this book. When I first read it, I was obsessed. Then it became a movie and I loved that too but if I were to read the books now (for the first time), I think that I’d hate it. I would probably think that Edward was on the same page as Christian and is a psychopathic stalker who needed to relax and Bella would drive me absolutely bat shit crazy if I were to read about her now. I don’t have a lot of patience for uninteresting characters and Bella just isn’t interesting to me anymore so I would probably either hate this book or DNF it, one of those.

Have you read any of the books listed on this list? Do you think they’d stand the test of time if you were to read them now? Are there any books that you loved before but would probably hate if you read them now? Share in the comments!
