#DFRAT Excerpt and Giveaway: Waiting Fate by W.B. Kinnette

Posted July 29, 2013 by Tracy in Reviews | 1 Comment

Sometimes Fate hides in plain sight while you stumble through darkness.

Ivy escapes from an abusive husband, finding peace with her daughter in her childhood home. She’s determined to keep her past a secret to protect those she loves.

Archer has been in love with the same girl since seventh grade. When Ivy comes back into his life—bruised, broken, and haunted by secrets—he knows he can’t lose her again.

But Ivy made a promise to her daughter. No one would hurt them again. She’s afraid to trust, afraid to be wrong again, and afraid that the one man she’s loved forever will break her heart.

Fate might take its time, but it won’t wait forever.

As he walked her to her door, she slid her small fingers into his, and he ran his thumb across the back of her hand. The night was cool. At the door she turned, smiling up at him. “Thank you Archer. It was… fun.”

He couldn’t see clearly, but he could swear she was smirking. Yeah, you blew your chance. Way to go. So he hugged her, wrapping his arms around her waist, like he’d done a hundred other times before. They were a huggy group.

He was surprised when she rose on her toes and slid her arms around his neck, holding tight like he was a lifeline. He pulled back, just a bit, hoping but afraid to hope as he searched her eyes. They sparkled, just a bit, and then she leaned forward, closing the gap between them and brushing her lips against his.

Time stopped. The world stopped and he froze in shock. It took him several seconds to realize what was happening, and then he kissed her back, holding her tight against him. He could feel her heart racing, matching his. When she relinquished his lips, he sucked in a breath, struggling to breathe. “I’ve wanted to do that since high school,” he muttered, almost without realizing it.

#DFRAT Excerpt (+ a Giveaway): Her Gilded Prison by Beverly Oakley.

DFRAT2013Check out Her Gilded Prison by Beverly Oakley

The lovely Lady Sybil’s 20-year marriage has not produced an heir – which is hardly surprising since her husband cannot bear to be parted from his long-term mistress.

When heir-apparent, handsome cousin Stephen arrives at Grange Hall to be briefed on his duties as the next Viscount Partington, he sets many feminine hearts a-flutter, including those of Sybil’s two daughters: plain, dumpy Hetty and fiery, exquisite Araminta.

Then a unwelcome contender for the viscountancy emerges. Presumed dead, Edgar turns out not to have died on the battlefield – but nor has he distinguished himself there, either.

In order that mutton-headed Edgar never inherit what her husband has spent his lifetime creating, Lady Sybil devises an extraordinary plan…
In his wildest dreams, Cousin Stephen never expected his duties would be so diverse.

Chapter One of Her Gilded Prison

The three men were on their knees now, heads craned forward, eyes fixed with prurient interest on the amorous adventure playing out on the gossamer web before them.

“He’s launching in, for God’s sake! Dipping his wick – if you could only see it! Look at him.”

Stephen felt the young Earl of Barston’s breath hot on his arm, then intercepted his gaze: rapt, enquiring, as he whispered, “She’ll kill him for it?”

His host, Sir Archie Ledger’s coarse laugh cut in as he jostled for a better look. “You say he knows his reward is death?” He twisted his head to look at Stephen, darting a glance at his wife who sat calmly embroidering at the far end of the drawing room, before adding under his breath, “The fuck of eternal damnation, eh? I reckon that’s what I got.”

It was no secret Sir Archibald Ledger had been pressured into marriage following an indiscretion with the lovely but sharp-tongued Miss Julia Preston.
Lady Julia raised her head at the commotion and her voice cut like scissors into the schoolboy game Stephen was master-minding.

“I say, gentlemen, what’s more interesting than paying some attention to the ladies. Mr Craven, I want you to please take a seat by me and tell me all about your new benefactor.”

Archie’s voice dropped a notch and the three young men huddled closer, eyes still fixed on the spider’s web, just below the escritoire. “Take cover, gentlemen, here she comes.” His voice soured. “No, it’s no good. She’s found us. Story of my life. Fun’s over.”

Stephen, still on his knees, blinked to see first Lady Julia’s well turned ankle and then, as she bent down, her lovely face. As her lively green eyes locked with his, he felt the tug between gaze and groin, and wondered at Archie’s discontent. She was a diamond of the first water.

“What is so fascinating, gentlemen?” Her intimate murmur sounded as if it were just for him. Her gaze was certainly focused on him as her mouth curved in a secret, knowing smile.

Stephen sucked in a breath and found he was quite unable to answer. Since he’d come back from war he was unused to mixing in such elite company, though as a boy, before his mother’s decline, he remembered frequenting houses like this.

Just when he assumed she’d solicit her husband for information she brushed his hand with hers, the smile that was just for him, still in place.

Good God, he thought he’d imagined it before. Now, with Sir Archie still on his haunches, to her right, reluctantly in the process of rising, Stephen was quite clearly being conveyed a secret message. Lady Julia admired him. He forced himself to breathe evenly as his cock sprang to attention. He could not rise now, for God’s sake. He must keep them watching at least a few seconds longer.

“She’s going to devour him.” He heard the urgency in his voice that had nothing to do with the mating spiders.

“Nothing happening.” Archie sounded bored as he groaned and gripped the table leg to heave himself up. Stephen remembered having wondered at a match which had the spindly-legged, unprepossessing Sir Archie marching the very lovely Miss Julia Preston down the aisle with such haste the season before. He’d not thought about the lovely debutante again until news spread that the couple had been blessed with twin boys within a barely timely eight and a half months of their nuptials.

Now Lady Julia looked as dewy fresh and desirable as she had when Stephen had gazed admiringly at her in the ballroom as a young man experienced in battle but completely unprepared for London society. His mother had left him little of the vast fortune she’d frittered away through drink and gambling though enough to at least deport himself like the gentleman he’d been born.

He managed, but only just.

“No, nothing happening,” repeated Archie. “I’ll wager a thousand monkeys you’re all hot air, Craven.”

Lady Julia, who’d straightened, bent at the waist to peer again at the scene which had so excited the gentlemen.

“Oh, my goodness, the spider jumped!” she squeaked, twisting round so suddenly she tripped over her husband’s arm and fell full length upon Stephen.

For a second he just lay prone beneath her, eyes wide with shock as her soft curves moulded his hard – very hard – contours – not all of them his bones … and swallowed as he broke into a cold sweat – for she must clearly recognise she was lying upon where there should be no peaks.

“Get up Julia. Craven, do you accept the wager?” Archie, who sounded as if these were everyday occurrences, took his wife’s elbow and hauled her to her feet. But not before Julia had slanted a knowing, and very provocative look, at Stephen.

“What? Er, yes,” Stephen mumbled, paying only half a mind. He rarely gambled these days. He had only to recall his wretched, fatherless youth, and the antics of his feckless, beloved, wager-mad mama.

“Good fellow!” A hearty handshake followed as Stephen rose. He took refuge behind the back of the Egyptian sofa and forced a strained smile at his hosts.
“I do love an unusual wager,” Lady Julia murmured, adopting a pose of rare solidarity beside her husband. “So this big, bold, female spider – obviously a prime article in the arachnid world – has just suffered the amorous attentions of her tiny, boring, timid, ineffectual husband.” Her knowing smile broadened and her words were heavy with emphasis as she enunciated each word. It was impossible to miss her meaning and Stephen could only wonder that Archie didn’t bristle at the obvious allusion to their own marital situation. She stroked Archie’s arm while asking Stephen in silky tones, “You’re the celebrated man of science in the room, Mr Craven. Please explain in … explicit terms … the courting rituals of the spider world.”

Stephen flicked a glance at Archie. Fortunately he appeared to be his usual good-humoured self – and just as keen for information as his wife.
He cleared his throat. “The male spider will court the female and … and then after he…”

“Impregnates her,” Lady Julia supplied with an enquiring smile.

#DFRAT Excerpt and Giveaway: Texas Two Step: The Prequel by Cynthia D’Alba

Posted July 28, 2013 by Tracy in Reviews | 2 Comments

Their love never died, but her secrets could break his trust beyond repair.

Texas Montgomery Mavericks, Book 1

After six years and too much self-recrimination, rancher Mitch Landry is ready to admit he was wrong. He’d loved Olivia Montgomery but commitment wasn’t high on his list back then. That was his first mistake. He’s just divorced his second, and he’s set to do whatever it takes to convince Olivia to give him another try.

Through hard work, determination and more than a few tears, Olivia survived the break-up with Mitch. She’s rebuilt her life around her business and the son she loves more than life itself. She’s not proud of the mistakes she’s made—particularly the secrets she’s kept—but when life hands you manure, you use it to make something better of yourself…lest you get stuck in it.

At a hot, muggy Dallas wedding, they reconnect. Olivia’s first instinct is to play it cool, but after one devastating kiss things flare real out of control, real fast. Maybe a quick roll in the hay will get him out of her system once and for all. Funny thing about hay though, once it’s tangled in your hair, getting it out risks revealing things that were never meant to see the light of day.

Product WarningsContains hot sex, a vindictive ex-wife, and hot chocolate chip cookies.

Excerpt: Texas Two Step

Mitch stepped up beside her, took her fingers and pulled them into the crook of his arm. Trapped between the heat of his palm and the hard muscles of his forearm, her hand burned. She tried to pull away but he tightened his grip to keep her firmly in place.

“You look beautiful,” he whispered in her ear. “Thank you for wearing the necklace. Did you put pictures inside?”

The combination of warm breath in her ear and the softness in his voice sent chills rippling down her spine. Everything inside her tightened. Reflexively, she touched the locket then shook her head. “No,” she lied. “Never did.” She shivered and he gave her hand another light squeeze.

“You okay?”

She nodded, unable to force words past the knot in her throat. Oh Mitch, if I could tell you everything, would you understand? Would you hate me? Would you have come if I’d called?

Mitch was her past and she needed to keep reminding herself of that reality. Until today, she’d been positive her love for Mitch had died years ago. As she walked beside him, touching him, smelling him, her heart inflamed with feelings, she feared she was no longer in control of her emotions. Heck, she was pretty sure she was close to out-of-control. And right now, she wasn’t sure how she felt about that.

Together she and Mitch followed the rest of the wedding party to the staircase leading down to the hotel’s wine cellar. Shoes thumped on thick carpet. Voices filled with laughter and joy echoed off the walls as the wedding party trooped down to an area designed to hold far fewer people than were currently filing in.

Olivia stepped through the door with Mitch close behind, the palm of his hand scorching her lower back through the silk of her dress. Her heart throbbed painfully in her throat. How could she possibly swallow food around the boulder resting there?

She stepped forward, trying to put some distance between them, but he moved swiftly, matching her step for step, staying close, continuing to touch her.

She glanced at the single, round table set with fresh flowers, candles and seventeen place settings of fine china. Seventeen chairs crowded around a table meant for fifteen. Flickering flames from the candles tossed dancing shadows along the walls and on the ceiling. All in all, an incredibly romantic setting with extremely cozy seating.

A setting she did not feel safe sharing with Mitch Landry.

Too close.

Too intimate.

Too painful.

Before she could escape to the far side of the table away from him, Mitch pulled back a chair. He tipped his head toward the table and said, “I believe we’re supposed to sit here.”

Olivia looked at the china then noticed the place card with Ms. Olivia Montgomery Gentry mocking her from above the plate. Her gaze slid to the right. Mr. Mitch Landry.

What she said was, “Oh, okay.”

What she meant was damn it.

She sat and Mitch took the chair next to hers. She scooted to the left. He followed. His thick, muscular thigh pressed against hers. She pulled her legs together and broke contact, but not for long. Within seconds, he was pressed against her again.

She didn’t need the heat from his leg to remind her he sat beside her. His unique spicy cologne filled her nose. The taste of him remained on her lips, in her mouth. Her back still burned from the branding of his palm. Her fingertips stung from his touch. Her body was on fire. Her nerves were arcing like a clipped electrical wire.

Hotel staff poured champagne into the flutes on the table. She didn’t need any champagne tonight. She was already drunk on Mitch Landry.

The food must have been good. The Grayson staff was known for excellent cuisine, but one would never know from her plate. She barely touched her steak or the vegetables, or even the turtle cheesecake, her absolute favorite dessert. Mostly, she moved the food from one side of the plate to the other. The food she did put in her mouth tasted like Mitch’s tongue. Every aroma smelled like Mitch, dark and sexy.

She was in heaven…and hell.

Texas Montgomery Mavericks, Book 2

Go back to where it all began…When Olivia Montgomery met Mitch Landry and their lives were changed forever.

Texas Two Step:The Prequel is a short story. It serves as an introduction to Olivia Montgomery and Mitch Landry, the primary characters in the novel, Texas Two Step. The Prequel covers their college dating years up to their break-up. Texas Two Step, the novel, continues the story six years later.

Texas Two Step: The Prequel

Tuesday morning’s arrival brought some relief. She’d scheduled a pedicure to go with her standing manicure appointment and frankly, nothing but a full body massage relaxed her more than a pedicure. As she crawled into the Pedi-chair and stuck her abused feet into the warm swirling water, she released an audible sigh.

“Too hot?” Tonya, her manicurist, asked.

“No. Perfect,” Olivia said, settling back into the seat. She flipped on the chair’s rolling massager. “I needed this.”

Tonya looked at Olivia’s feet. “You sure do. Those toenails are long enough to peel bananas.”

“Ha ha. There goes your tip.”

Tonya lifted one eyebrow. “I have sharp instruments and I know how to use them.”

Olivia grinned. “Got it. Tip restored. So, tell me about your date this weekend. Was he the one?”

Tonya began telling one of her long-winded date reenactments, which Olivia usually loved, but today found herself struggling to follow. She nodded in the right places, clucked her tongue when Tonya’s date did the funky chicken on the dance floor at the hottest nightclub in town, and shook her head in commiseration when Tonya described his overenthusiastic, lip-sucking, tonsil-swabbing good-night kiss.

“So, when’s the next date?”

Tonya popped the top of Olivia’s foot with a nail file. “I am not going out with him again. Never. I’ll stay single if that’s the best that’s out there.”

“You know, there’s always playing for the other team.” Olivia bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing.

“Sorry, chicko. I know you’re hot for me, but you just don’t have the right equipment.”

Both women laughed.

“What about you? Do anything fun this past weekend?”

Olivia shrugged. “Emily and I went to The Bourbon Cowboy Friday night to celebrate our birthdays, but that’s it. Saturday night I watched a Hallmark movie that made me cry and Sunday I cleaned house. Other than Friday, does any of that sound fun to you?”

Tonya tapped Olivia’s foot. “Put that back in the water and give me the other one.” After Olivia did as instructed Tonya said, “So no exciting men at the bar? I hear The Bourbon Cowboy is the place to husband-hunt if you’re looking for a lawyer. Neither of you met anyone interesting?”

“Emily did.”

“Really. Tell all. Keep your foot in the water.”

“Guy named Wes Benton. They had dinner Sunday night and again last night. I’ve barely seen my roomie.”

“No kidding. Good for her. He a looker?”

“Tall, dark and handsome.”

Tonya shook her head. “That Emily has all the luck.”

“Ain’t that the truth. Of course the fact that she’s tall, curvy and gorgeous doesn’t exactly drive the men away.”

“Maybe you need to find some ugly girlfriends to run around with, you know, to make you look better.”

Olivia chuckled. “Sounds like a plan. You busy next weekend?”

“Har har. Sharp instruments, remember?”

Olivia laughed, but before she could respond her cell phone began playing “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. Pulling it from her pocket, she read the display but didn’t recognize the number.

“Olivia? This is Mitch Landry.”His deep voice saying her name sent her stomach into a pitch and roll. “Hi.” Good lord. She sounded all breathy, as though trying too hard to sound like Marilyn Monroe. She cleared her throat and tried again. “Sorry. Had a frog in my throat. Hi. How are you?”

Tonya tapped her foot. Olivia pulled both feet from the water.

“I’m good. You?”

“Did I catch you at a bad time?”

“Oh, no. This is fine.”

Tonya pointed to the phone and mouthed, “A guy?”

Olivia nodded.

Tonya mimicked kissing.

Olivia grinned and looked away before Tonya could become more animated in her mime show.

“I enjoyed Friday night. I was glad you got home safely.”

Ah. He’d been talking to Wes.

“We did. Thank you. What do I owe you for the cab?”

Could this conversation get more formal and awkward?

“What? The cab? Nothing. I was glad to do it.”

Okay, she wasn’t letting him get away so easily this time.

“I would like to pay you back. How about I buy your dinner?”

Tonya chuckled.

Olivia glared down at her and mouthed, “Hush.”

“Dinner. I’d love to, but I’m paying. I insist.”

“Okay. When?”

The pause was long enough that Olivia checked the phone’s screen to see if she’d lost the call. She hadn’t.

Oh lord. Had she pushed too hard? Maybe he was having second thoughts about dinner with her.

“Sorry about that,” Mitch said. “I had to grab my class schedule.” There was another pause. “I’ve got a bear of a test on Thursday. What about Friday night?”

“I can do Friday night.” Olivia’s heart danced the jig. She had a date with Mitch Landry.

“Great. Why don’t I pick you up about six-thirty. That work for you?”

“It works for me. Where are we going? I mean, I need to know how to dress. Casual or dressy?”

“Dressy. I was thinking The Fireplace Room at Grayson Mansion. Have you been there?”

The Fireplace Room? The most expensive and exclusive restaurant in Dallas?

Was he kidding? Calm down. Act like you go there every weekend.

“I’d love to go back to The Fireplace Room. It’s one of my favorite places.” Or it would be if she’d ever got to see the inside of the legendary eatery.

“Great. I’ll see you Friday.”

“See you then.”

#DFRAT: Excerpt (+ a Giveaway): Hired by Lily Harlem

DFRAT2013Check out Hired by Lily Harlem

One hundred grand to babysit bad boy Logan “Phoenix” Taylor on a paradise island-seriously, how bad could he be? Frankly, it didn’t matter. Not when it would make my dreams of going to nursing school possible. I wasn’t even expected to talk to him, just hang out in a luxurious villa on a private beach and study.
Simple, right? But I hadn’t counted on Logan being so deliciously bad that he was oh so good. And when the temperature cranked to boiling point, he knew just how to satisfy the deepest, darkest part of my soul and give my body exactly what it needed.
Amongst the sand and waves, we transported each other to an exquisite world of pleasure where only we existed, only we mattered. But the heady mix of emotions and lust couldn’t keep things from spiraling out of control back in reality, where I had to keep the secret that I’d been hired to entertain him…even if it shattered my delicate heart. Even if it cost my destiny.

Read an Excerpt of Hired:

HiredI watched Logan close the umbrella and secure the pole into place. He glanced around, shading his eyes with his hand, checking for anything else that might blow away, then headed my way with a train of dry, flat leaves skittering past his feet. I opened the door wide to let him through. He stepped in, still squinting against the dust, as I pushed the door shut with a loud click. The world went silent. After the howling wind and the roaring sea, the quiet of the house was acute and heavy and fell around us like a dense cloak.

Leaning back against the door, I pulled in a deep breath. “Made it,” I gasped.

“Yeah,” he said, stepping up close—real close.

When I looked up, his cheeks were stained red, several grains of sand hung in his long lashes and his hair was tousled and dusted with gold. “Is that everything tied down?” I asked, trying to ignore my breasts heaving against my halter-top.

“Well, almost everything,” he said with a decidedly carnal grin.

I swallowed and flattened my palms against the cool glass door behind me. “What else do you need to tie down?”

The right side of his mouth creased upward and his brows gave the tiniest of twitches. “I’d quite like to tie you down,” he said, his gaze coming to rest on my mouth. “To the bed.”

Licking my lips, I tasted salt. My stomach knotted as excitement, anticipation and sin collided in a delicious tangle.

“But I guess that’s moving a bit fast,” he murmured, bending his head lower. “We only just met.”

“A bit fast for me,” I agreed, absorbing the burning heat from his body as it radiated against mine.

“Brooke.” He raised one hand and rested it against the wooden doorframe by my left ear. His body moved in closer still. The gorgeous spiced aftershave he wore invaded my nostrils and settled not just on my tongue but somewhere else deep inside me. “Do you remember when you walked out of the water yesterday?” he asked in a low, rumbling voice.

“Yes.” How could I forget the toe-curling embarrassment? He’d stared silently toward me as I’d ambled up the beach, trying desperately to look cool and unflustered. I felt my cheeks warming further at the memory as my stomach twisted.

“It was a million times better than any Bond movie.”

“It was?”

“Hell, yeah. If they had you as a Bond girl it would be my favorite film by miles. Not just 007, but in general, any film ever.” His mouth slid upward in a grin. “You just about blew my mind.”

“I did?” My eyes widened in surprise. He’d liked what he’d seen, and I thought he’d been unimpressed with my curvy attributes.

“Oh, yeah, and other parts of my anatomy.”

He ducked his head, his lips a whisper from mine. I could almost taste the salt on his mouth.

“Well, we wouldn’t want that would we, Logan?” I murmured.

“Wouldn’t we?” His brows raised.

“Sounds painful.” I swallowed, my throat felt tight.

“It’s already getting painful.”

#DFRAT Excerpt and Giveaway: Discovering Alicia by Tessie Bradford

Posted July 27, 2013 by Tracy in Reviews | 4 Comments

Four glorious weeks in a cabin nestled deep in the wilds of Northern Michigan is exactly what Alicia needs. Fishing, sleeping and reading are the only things on her agenda until she finds herself on the forest floor with a gorgeous man running his strong hands over her body. When she realizes they know each other she’s surprised, but when he revs her into a sexual frenzy in a hot minute, Alicia is stunned. The last thing she needs to do is to repeat past mistakes.

Brad can’t believe his college crush is literally sprawled at his feet. It’s been ten years, but she still heats his blood to boiling in an instant. She’s in his neck of the woods for an entire month, the perfect amount of time for a steamy, no-strings-attached fling.

Alicia and Brad soon discover they are both looking for far more.

Copyright: Tessie Bradford, 2013
He stopped mere inches away and reached out to tuck a piece of her wet hair behind her ear. “I’m a big believer in honesty, Alicia.” He trailed his finger down her cheek. “You’re as pretty as a picture, all flustered and staring at me with those big doe eyes. If you don’t want me to kiss you, now would be the time to speak up.”
She wouldn’t have uttered a word if the hounds of hell were snapping at her butt. Ali was stunned to see his pupils dilate with desire. Brad cupped the back of her head and placed his lips gently on hers. His kiss was tender, coaxing, and magical. She tentatively rested one palm on his side, just above his waistband. His skin was warm and smooth, the muscles underneath taut. He adjusted his stance slightly and wrapped his arm around her, his hand lying scandalously low on her back. Ali sighed and snuggled at bit closer. Her heart threatened to pound out of her chest when he responded immediately. He pulled her tightly against his body, delightfully crushing her breasts against his chest. Tastes and nibbles quickly escalated to feverish parrying of tongues. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and he massaged her back.
When they were finally forced to break the kiss in order to catch their breath, Alicia dropped her head to his shoulder. Brad cradled both cheeks of her ass and moved her seductively against his massive erection. The reality of what she’d just done, what he obviously and naturally wanted to do next hit her like a ton of bricks. She wiggled out of his embrace, desperately needing space to get herself under control.
What the fuck was she doing? Granted, they weren’t strangers, but spending time in a lab, three days a week, for one semester, almost ten years ago, didn’t warrant this level of friendliness when running into each other in the woods! Hell, she hadn’t even recognized him at first. She closed her eyes and ran shaky fingers through her long, damp hair.
“You wanna tell me what’s wrong, Ali?” he asked quietly.
“Nothing, everything’s great. The kiss was great. You’re great.” She attempted a smile. “Wow, it’s really getting dark fast. I should go back.” She fumbled for the flashlight hanging from her belt, and after a few tries, was able to turn it on. She then pulled the soaking, crumpled up map out of her pocket. “It was great to see you again, Brad. Maybe we’ll run into each other again while I’m here.” Ali turned and headed in what she hoped was the right direction, but in less than two steps, a large hand wrapped around her arm.
“Freeze, woman.” She did as he ordered. “I, too, appreciate all of the greatness that’s happened tonight,” Brad whispered against her ear. “Especially when you melted in my arms.” Ali gasped when he pressed firmly against her backside. “Why are you running away, skittish as a scared rabbit? Nothing’s gonna happen that you don’t want, and you want badly.”
Alicia spun around to face him, so embarrassed and horny she couldn’t think straight. In a hot second, Brad Compton, geeky science guy, now ultimate sex-on-a-stick guy had her almost forgetting the lessons she’d learned the hard way. “I’m so, so sorry, Brad; please…” She stared up at him, horrified when a single tear trickled down her cheek.
He brushed it away with a feather-light touch of his thumb. “Come on, Ali; let’s get you home.”
