Kris‘ review of Nightwalker (Dark Days Book 1) by Jocelynn Drake

For centuries Mira has been a nightwalker–an unstoppable enforcer for a mysterious organization that manipulates earth-shaking events from the darkest shadows. But elemental mastery over fire sets her apart from others of her night-prowling breed…and may be all that prevents her doom.

The foe she now faces is human: the vampire hunter called Danaus, who has already destroyed so many undead. For Mira, the time has come to hunt…or be hunted.

But in a dimension just beyond the world’s boundaries, a banished race stirs dangerously, hungry for power, for domination, for vengeance. Already a protective seal has been breached: already blood flows like a river through the world’s great cities.

And only the collaboration of two sworn enemies can save humankind…and its feral brethren.

Great book!! This is not a romance yet, but it has potential to have some romance in it. Mira is a nightwalker, aka vampire, and is a great kick butt heroine. She is an old vampire who does not want a “family” to take care of because of the responsibility but she does protect those in her domain. Danaus is a vampire hunter. He has stumbled across something that he needs her help with though.

The naturi are trying to free their queen again and that is not a good thing. The naturi are essentially elves/faerie, but they have no need for humans and see them as nuisances that need to be exterminated. The vampires are too crazy about humans but they need them to survive. They begin to work together to try to stop the naturi. The Elders of the vampires also are working with them to try to stop this, but they are also using Mira for their own goals and that was frustrating to me for her, because she had no control over their wishes. They are her Elders and she had to do what they wanted and that lack of control always bugs me for the characters.

There is not much romance in this book, but there is the potential for it. Danaus constantly says that he is protecting her so that he can kill her himself when this is all over. But i think that is going to be easier said than done.

I do not think there was anything that I did not like about this book (except maybe my impatience for them to get together and for the next book). This was a great story and I cannot wait to read the next book.

I give this one a 4.75 out of 5.

This book is available from EOS. You can buy it here or here in e-book.
