book-alejandrossorceressEXCERPT FROM ALEJANDRO’S SORCERESS BY ALYSSA DAY
Rose stalked back into the house, very deliberately not slamming the door behind her. Arrogant, pompous, sexist excuse for a law enforcement officer. Although, from what she’d seen in her very limited experience, those qualities were the norm, not the exception, in men carrying badges and guns. Look at the stupid sheriff.

She calmed down inside the kitchen, and her innate sense of fairness started to kick in. The officers who’d come to the house and told them about Daddy’s car accident couldn’t have been nicer or more considerate. One of the men–Officer Engel, she’d always remember his name, though she’d only been twelve at the time–he’d sat and held her mother’s hand while she cried.

Okay. Fine. Then only Alejandro and the Garden City sheriff were arrogant asses. Although, speaking of asses, Alejandro’s was really something to behold. Not that she’d looked on purpose, but it had been hard to miss when he ran outside to find his partner.

“Why am I even thinking about this, Bob?” she rhetorically asked her stone cat, who didn’t answer.

She didn’t need him to answer, though. Agent Tall, Dark, and Dangerously Hot was too sexy for his own good—and far too sexy for her equilibrium to remain steady. He was ridiculously good looking, as if Hollywood had cast him in the role of action hero. Muscled in all the right places, silky black hair that was just a hint too long, and dark eyes that looked at her as if she were an especially juicy piece of fruit he’d like to suck between those sexy lips.

Rose stumbled over her own feet when a surge of heat whipped through her at the thought of him sucking on any juicy parts of hers.

“Oh, goddess, I’m in trouble here. Focus, Rose,” she whispered to the empty room, more proof that she was losing it, as if she’d needed evidence.

Focus. Right. She crossed to the refrigerator and retrieved another vial. At this rate, if they didn’t get rid of the basilisks soon, she’d have to make another batch. Not to mention she didn’t know if the potion was strong enough to rescue a grown man. The paperboy had been a close one, not that she’d admitted it to anyone. He’d taken longer to transform back from stone to human than she’d hoped.

Plus, he’d refused to deliver their paper ever again. Ungrateful little monster.

Alejandro walked in the door, and the air in the room changed and grew heated; charged as if the electric potential of a summer storm had centered itself over her kitchen counter. The skin on the back of her neck tingled with a delicious feeling of anticipation.

Stupid neck.

Guest Review: The Covert Wolf by Bonnie Vanak

Judith’s review of The Covert Wolf by Bonnie Vanak.

Loyalties collide, passions ignite and a high-stakes adventure ensues in Bonnie Vanak’s sensual new military series.…

When a mission gone wrong kills his best friend, Navy SEAL Matthew Parker will stop at nothing to destroy the demons who threaten his team. To do so, Matt must locate a mysterious orb before the demons use it to destroy the world. But the only woman who can help him—Sienna McClare—has her own agenda…and every reason for hating his kind.

A half blood, Sienna hopes returning the orb to her people will gain her acceptance back into the only family she’s known. But working with a Draicon werewolf like Matt comes with a high price—one that could cost Sienna her dreams. A natural-born leader, her werewolf lover must now teach Sienna to listen to her heart—and go where their all consuming passion leads them.

Those who know that I read lots of books are often surprised that I like paranormal romance. I have more often than not been found with my nose in a non-fiction book, a historical romance, or an academic tome of some sort. Now I have sunk my teeth into a book that is filled with surprise, mystery on several levels, prejudice and sexual attraction, a deep sense of abandonment, and wounds of the heart and soul. Sienna is half fae and part Draicon werewolf but she is determined to prove her worth to the fae community in order to bring home a magic orb and re-establish herself as a full, functioning member of the community she has long called home. Yet with Matt she found an acceptance that went far beyond that of the community she called family and who eventually kicked her to the curb. She also found a new understanding of family, one that wasn’t based on a judgmentalism that called one’s sense of worth into question. She found love but she was afraid to accept it because it involved the very species she had long hoped to deny in herself.
This author has a deft touch in working all the varied aspects of this story into a remarkable textured whole, replete with magic and humanity, caring and family, hunger for community and a deep desire to do good for all people. It is a story that is intense and multi-layered and which draws the reader into a world where people appear just like you and me and yet they are filled with magic and the ability to live in another dimension of our world. The slowly developing love between Matt and Sienna keeps the tension level at just below sizzle and even when they become lovers, there are still miles to go before full trust grows between them.
There are lots of paranormal romances “out there” and lovers of that romance genre have lots to choose from. But this is a book that is easy to read and yet is filled with adventure and loving, good people and strange demons, fear and reassurance. So do yourself a favor and put this on to “to read” list. I think you’ll be glad you did.

I give it a rating of 4 out of 5

Guest Review: The Shadow Wolf by Bonnie Vanak

Judith’s review of The Shadow Wolf by Bonnie Vanak

On the run from authorities, gutsy Megan Moraine knows shadow wolves like herself have no place in this world. But she’s still prepared to do anything to protect her young charges. That resolve is tested when the trio is captured by Gabriel Robichaux. Everyone knows that Gabriel is a ruthless bounty hunter, a member of an elite group called the Enforcers. Why then is Megan so attracted to her enemy—a wolf who hunts his own people? A wolf whose languid, sexy drawl makes her dream the impossible?

A new novel from this author and one that is filled with tension and suspense, watching a woman and her two twin child cousins try to escape the prejudice and oppression that had become the norm for “shadow wolves” — those shifters who had the ability to become invisible. Deemed abnormal, these shifters had been consigned to an island camp where they were quarantined from “normal” werewolves. Megan has planned this escape attempt but nothing has really gone as it should.

Now Gabriel, an undercover advocate for “shadow wolves” has come to their aide, yet there are still humans and shifters who are after their lives and who are also seeking Gabriel to wreck revenge for deaths they cannot accept–sons and daughters who had become feral and whose existence Gabriel had been ordered to end. This is a story that is never easy, one that has at its core both the budding romance between Gabriel and Megan, but also the never absent issue of how can these three live in a world that has declared them abnormal, broken, unwanted and feared. Gabriel has his own secrets that make complications in their flight from death, but also impinges upon any potential future Megan and Gabriel may have together. The two little girls have learned well that they are different, that their very survival depends on remaining “mum” about lots of stuff in their lives, and are loyal to their older cousin to a fault. As their parents are dead, Megan is their only older relative and she wants to re-unite them with their father in New Orleans, believing that then they would be safe, surrounded by a family and father’s embrace, and able to have a good life instead of the crippling existence in their quarantine situation.

This is not easy reading and is not for those who want a light, fluffy, quick read. It is a novel that pulls at the emotions, is one that the ultimate resolution grows more and more improbably, and which is indeed ended only with some surprising developments. This is the first novel by this author I have read but I was impressed by her expertise and by the overall excellence of the composition of the work. It is somewhat a different kind of paranormal but most of all it deals with the issue of prejudice and how being comfortable with someone who is “different” is so difficult for some, especially when they gain power and are able to enforce their prejudice upon a significant segment of society. It is no different in human society, but the author, I think, has used the paranormal setting to make her point. I was wooed by the love between Megan and her cousins and I was blessed by their loyalty to one another. I experienced deep distress at the rejection of those who should have loved them, and deeply affected by the girls’ questions as to why everyone hated them. Prejudice hurts everyone.

I highly recommend this book to those looking for a paranomal romance that is out of the ordinary and which, while easy to read and told in a very readable style, still deals with some hard issues and entertains while it is educating. This particular issue of this novel also includes another shorter work that was previously released. Thus, there is more here for readers to enjoy.

I give this novel a rating of 4 out of 5
