What Did You Get for Christmas?

Posted December 27, 2011 by Rowena in Miscellaneous | 3 Comments

I can’t believe that Christmas has come and gone already. It was a very hectic Christmas weekend for me filled with lots of family coming in from out of town, trips to the cemetery to spend time at Mom’s grave site with all nine of her kids and every single one of her grand kids.

I didn’t have time to log onto Blogger and get things scheduled and for that I apologize.

We here at Book Binge hope that you guys had a very blessed Christmas with loads of family and plenty of gifts.

MERRY BELATED CHRISTMAS!

So, what did you guys find waiting for you underneath your Christmas tree this year? Did you guys get anything fantabulous?

I did.

I got this:

…and to say that I’m thrilled is putting it lightly. I absolutely freaking love it. Surprise of all surprises though is that I haven’t loaded one single book on it yet. I’ve been too busy watching movies on it and playing different games (Fruit ninja is my bitch) and Facebooking on it but this week is when I’ll be adding books and trying out the whole e-reader part of this fabulous device.

So as you can tell, I’m pretty stoked about my Christmas this year.

What did you get this Christmas?

Nora Roberts sells 1 million Kindle Books

Posted January 13, 2011 by Holly in News | 0 Comments

Yesterday Amazon announced that Nora Roberts was the third author to sell 1 million Kindle books. Russ Grandinetti, vice President of Kindle Contest says, “Nora Roberts has been a bestseller at Amazon for 15 years so this accomplishment is no surprise. We’re happy to welcome Nora Roberts to the Kindle Million Club, joining Stieg Larsson and James Patterson.”

SEATTLE—Jan. 12, 2011—Amazon.com, Inc., (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced that Nora Roberts has become the third author to sell over 1 million Kindle books, becoming the third member of the “Kindle Million Club.” As of yesterday, Nora Roberts has sold 1,170,539 Kindle books under her name and her pseudonym J.D. Robb. The Kindle Million Club recognizes authors whose books have sold over 1 million paid copies in the Kindle Store (www.amazon.com/kindlestore). Stieg Larsson, author of the Millennium Trilogy, was the first author to hit the 1 million mark.  James Patterson, author of more than 65 books that span the genres of suspense, fantasy, romance, historical fiction and children’s, was the second author to join the Kindle Million Club.

I’m not surprised that La Nora was the third. The woman is a powerhouse.

Guest Review: Sparring Partners by Leigh Morgan

Posted November 21, 2010 by Book Binge Guest Blogger in Reviews | 0 Comments

Tracy’s review of Sparring Partners (Dojo Chronicles) by Leigh Morgan.

What if everything you always thought you wanted could be yours simply by saying “I do”? Billionaire Jordon Bennett needs to find a wife, now, to secure his position as CEO of B.H. Holdings. Reed Mohr could use a miracle to help pay for her alternative elder care facility, Potters Woods. Inside and out of the dojo, can these two survive sparring with each other?

Reed Mohr knows all about having to make sacrifices. When her job as a child advocate lead her to the decision to adopt one of the children, 14 year old Jesse Bane, from foster care she gave up her job and had to get married. Ok, she married her gay best friend so as not to actually have to have a real marriage, but giving up her job was pretty life changing.

Two years later: When Jordan Bennett is told by his uncle that he must get married within 72 hours…to a “real” woman in order to secure his future position as CEO of his uncle’s company, Jordan is stunned. He only dates models and actresses, how the heck is he going to find a real woman in 72 hours, get her to marry him and make her love him within 30 days? Impossible! Then he meets Reed at a museum and within 24 hours they’re married.

Neither of the two people expects their lives to change as drastically as they do. Reed is pissed off at Jordan for so many reasons, but she can’t seem to stop herself from being attracted to him – not just physically, but emotionally as well – because he’s a nice person. Jordan finds himself moved into Reed’s home, Potters Woods, with her, shall we say, eclectic family, and he’s not quite sure which end is up. He does know that he’s falling for Reed and her crazy family and really enjoying himself.

In the end Jordan has to figure out how to live his life and be happy, which he is with Reed and her family. But when he’s with his uncle and business associates he’s a complete ass and treats Reed like dirt. I have to say that I really didn’t like Jordan for a long time in this book but he definitely redeemed himself by the end. For Reed’s part she had to discover who she could be with Jordan as her husband as well as the world that he comes from – and that was just not an easy task.

This is a good book about love, family and self-discovery. It has some very touching moments in it that were quite moving – first between Jordan and an very aged resident of Potters Woods and then with Reed’s son Jesse. Leigh Morgan really knows how to do those tender moments well.

Overall an entertaining read.

Rating: 3.75 out of 5.

Guest Review: Rubies and Other Gems by Joyce DeBacco

Posted September 18, 2010 by Book Binge Guest Blogger in Reviews | 0 Comments

Judith‘s review of Rubies and Other Gems by Joyce DeBacco.

A one-night stand in her dreams isn’t the worst thing that can happen to Lily’s shaky marriage. Unless it involves a real man who lived and died years before she was born.

Transported through time by her grandmother’s ruby jewelry, Lily is appalled when she discovers Daniel, her dream lover, isn’t a dream after all. But she’s entranced by the simpler nature of times gone by and can’t resist going back again. But only after imposing strict rules on herself. When a miscalculation keeps her away longer than planned, she’s confronted by her enraged husband, Sam, on her return. Aware she can’t make amends and steer her children in the right direction unless she stays in the here and now, Lily vows to leave the past to the past.

But in her attempt to take away the jewelry’s power, she inadvertently sends herself back without her return ticket, the rubies. Aided only by the kindness of an older, grayer—and married Daniel, she fears she’ll grow old and die before her loved ones are born. A far greater fear is that her children won’t ever see the light of day if she’s not there to give birth to them.

I am as excited about action tales and erotic love stories as the next person. But from time to time readers encounter a love story that is really what I sometimes call a “life biography” or “pictures in the life of . . .” So it is with the family in this story, told mostly from the perspective of Lily Manning, a woman who had been married for 20 plus years with two nearly grown children and a quiet and non-expressive husband.

This novel is not your “hot-hot-hot” kind of novel. There are some love scenes sprinkled through out the tale, but they are not the engine that drives this novel. Rather it is the dynamic between Lily and her husband and children that are the forces that inspire her actions and reactions and which inevitably shape the relationships that are the center pieces of this literary work.

Pin Grandma’s ruby brooch on your sweater and put on one matching earring, sit down for a short nap in a favorite chair, and voila! Lily finds herself in her Grandma’s farm house kitchen, only it is during the years when her Grandma was a little girl. She discovers that the town where she lives looked very different 100 years prior to her lifetime, and she meets the blacksmith, a very handsome and friendly guy, to whom Lily is attracted. He is the stuff of which her fantasies are made. And given the fact that Lily and her husband are seldom intimate anymore, she is definitely open to a fantasy lover. However, after a journey back in time once or twice, Lily is appalled to discover that Daniel was a real person and that her fantasy lover wasn’t just a dream.

Lily must now make some decisions about her future that are difficult and which form the backdrop of the on-going story. The progress of her life and experiences tell of her discoveries about herself and her husband, Sam, about her children–especially her daughter who has been using drugs off and on for years, and about her son and his dreams. She must work very hard to re-build her marriage after Sam finds out about her infidelity. And she must decide what she is going to do about her Grandmother’s rubies.

The “gems” in the title may very well be the opportunities that are opened to her as she discovers more about herself and each of her family members. Certainly the rubies were a door to a whole other world and to people and their times, people who became important to Lily and upon whom she had more of an impact that she realized at the time. The “gems” may also be the people who are important to Lily. No doubt she gained a new appreciation for Sam and his faithfulness to her as a husband, a deeper respect for her children and their right as emerging adults to chart their own future, and a greater understanding of herself and what was really important to her happiness.

So I would recommend this novel as one of those books that moves the reader through the days, months, and years of living, that open the reader’s awareness to circumstances that, in this case, may be just a bit unique–how many of us get to be time travelers?–and which “warm the cockles of our hearts” with the genuine humanness of the story, and which remind each of us that there are precious factors in all our lives that go far beyond our estimation sometimes. I doubt if anyone on this planet truly appreciates their spouses, children, and special people in their lives as much as we should. So be sure to read this novel–it will be well-worth your time. I know it held my interst from start to finish, and I was entertained and instructed as I read. I give this book a rating of 4.25 out of 5.
