For six years Anya Korbin worked with Del-Rey Delgato--the genetically altered rebel known as the Coyote Ghost--to free a group of coyote women kept in her father's lab. As Anya matured into a woman, she and Del-Rey grew close…, but then he broke his promise and killed her father. Now she must deal with her animalistic desire for the one who betrayed her.

Of all Lora Leigh’s series, this one is by far my favorite. I feel like she has come so far from Tempting the Beast, which was book one in this series. Even though some things do get repetitive, she continues to build a world that I get sucked into every time.

Coyote Breeds are thought to be the most dangerous of them all. Willing to sell out their fellow Breeds for money, the Coyote’s are mostly enemies of the Breeds that are trying so hard to carve a life for themselves in the world. Del-Ray Delgado is the alpha of his pack and comes to an agreement with a Wolf pack to settle near their “den”. Haven is comparable to the Feline Breeds’ Sanctuary.

Del-Ray worked for six years with Anya Korbin to free Coyote Breeds held in the facility where she worked. Del-Ray knew from the day he met sixteen year old Anya that he would betray her, he just didn’t know how. Not knowing anything of the mating heat, he had no idea what Anya would one day be to him. He doesn’t find out until it’s too late, until he’s hurt the one woman that he never wanted to hurt.

For the six years that Anya worked beside Del-Ray to get her Coyote friends out of the labs, she fell more and more for him. When he betrays her by shooting her father after promising he wouldn’t be hurt, Anya can’t get past her hurt and anger over the betrayal. When he forces her to come with him to Colorado, she doesn’t think it could get any worse. That’s before she realizes that she is Del-Ray’s mate. Before she realizes what the mating heat can do to a person.

Anya has no intention of accepting Del-Ray’s claim over her, especially when she knows that he has no feelings for her other than the physical. Going before the Breed Council, Anya is the first mate to be granted a separation. Under the agreement, she doesn’t have to see Del-Ray and he can’t force her to be something she doesn’t want to be.

The men in this series are all the same in one basic way. They either claim the woman b/c it will protect them or they distance themselves to protect them. In this case, Del-Ray thought that officially claiming Anya as his mate would put her in danger. That part was heartbreaking. After almost a year of separation, Anya had come to terms with the fact that Del-Ray was her mate. Then he refused to claim her. Which caused problems that Del-Ray couldn’t have forseen, even though he was warned.

I thought this was a good installment of the Breed series b/c it gave us a look into the Breeds as a whole rather than separate (Coyotes, Wolf, Feline, etc.). I think that Lora Leigh has this series going in a good direction and I’m really looking forward into seeing how she furthers the plot.

4.25 out of 5.

This book was heartbreaking for me too. I cried several times with this book — once when Anya sent the email to cancel the mating ceremony and then again when Anya cried after being hurt.

I hadn’t really look forward to reading this book but now it’s one of my faves of the series. Really good read!!

  2. I agree is was a tear-jerker for me too. The only problem I had was when it kinda seemed like Del-Ray was making her have sex with him when she was upset and humiliated over her demotion as coya. Other than that I liked it and I’m looking forward to the next book about the Bengal Tiger.

  3. Thanks for the review Casee. I am amazed how Lora Leigh keeps this going. I have a very limited book budget so I can’t pick up this book… yet! But I definitely look forward to the read.

Good case in point re: spoilers. I didn’t read this review yet cuz I’m dying to read the book. I scrolled through the comments too, although I did see someone said they cried while reading it. WOOHOO, I love to cry when reading. In fact, I cried several times while reading Dawn’s Awakening and Harmony’s Way.

I’ll come back when I’m done with it and see if we agree.

  5. Thank you Casee! Am really looking forward to reading this book…I just wish my library would purchase it already (they have ALL of the others – have I mentioned how much I *heart* my library – even the Ellora’s Cave books).
