Retro Post: Books I Have No Desire To Read

*****As part of our 10 year anniversary celebration, we’ll be re-posting old reviews and posts that make us cringe, laugh or sigh all over again.

This post was originally published December 5, 2013.

booksI saw the post over at The Book Vixen where they listed the books that they had no desire to read and realized that I have a whole lot of books that I don’t care to read either.  Popular books that a lot of people seem to love that I just have no desire to read.

Here’s my list:

  1. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Holly is probably going to kill me for daring to list this book but it’s true. I have no desire to read this book. I can’t even be arsed to be ashamed…I just don’t wanna.
  2. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I know a lot of people from work that read and loved this book. But me? Meh. Not going to touch it.
  3. The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks. I know that this book features the children of Noah and Allie from The Notebook, but meh…I can’t drum up any kind of excitement to want to read it…so I know I never will.
  4. All of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. My friend Izzy tried to get me to read these books a long time ago and just as then, I still have no desire to read them. Don’t tell Izzy but even when I told her I was going to read them, I knew I wasn’t going to…they were just meh to me. I only watched the first movie too. Oh well.
  5. Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Back when I was really into this series, I wanted Styxx’s story but now that it’s out? Not interested. Not even a little interested either.
  6. Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James. Never wanted to read it and I don’t care how many people loved it, I’m never going to read these.

What are you some books that you have no desire to read?

  1. I agree with most of your list, except for Gone With the Wind. It’s a book I’ve read several times, ever since my first reading at 12 years old. It’s a great book, but I think the popularity of the movie diminished the desire of many to read it. It’s a shame, too, because some of Margaret Mitchell’s best just didn’t make it into a movie so closely focused on Scarlett and Rhett.

To your list, I’d add YA and New Adult sub-genres. There’s just too much other stuff out there that I already need time to read…not going to add new genres to the pile!

    • Holly recommended the book ages ago but I have no desire to read it. I know that I’m missing out but I choose to think ignorance is bliss. 🙂

  2. Pam C.

I’m with with you on the 50 shades of Grey. Wont watch the movie when it comes out also. I’m just not into the whole tortured tragic craze that’s going on. Read Bared to You and will eventually finish that series, but don’t plan to start anymore depressing crap.

    • It’s funny because a lot of my non-reader friends read and loved the 50 Shades series but my reader friends have all hated it and as much as I love my non-reader friends, I’m with my reader friends on this. Not touching those books.

I am shocked and hurt about Harry Potter. Sigh. It’s ok. I love those books enought for the both of us.

The Hunger Games is at the top of my “will not read” list. I dislike dystopians and I’m not wild about YA, so I can’t really think of any good reason to pick it up. Every single one of my non-reading friends has asked me about it and is shocked when I tell them I haven’t read it and don’t intend to. Fifty Shades is the other series at the top of my DNR list.

    • I read and really enjoyed The Hunger Games. But I love YA books and I can see why people wouldn’t care to read dystopian YA books. They can be a bit much. I’m right there with you on 50 Shades though.

Actually, I have no interest in reading ANY of Nicholas Sparks books. Sorry, female authors have been writing these books waaayyy before he hit the scene. And they’re better at it!

And I tried (I really tried) to read 50 Shades of Grey. Just like you, all of my non-reader friends raved about it. I figured I try it. Just….no. No.
