What Are You Reading? (390)

WAYR-New

Casee: I’m in a slump. Sure, I’m so busy I can barely see straight, but I have time to read and I’m just not doing it. I have mentioned numerous times that I have some amazing books to read and for some reason I’m just not picking them up. I’m bummed.

Holly: I had a great reading week. I’m finally out of my slump and reading for real again. I’m digging UF, PNR and Fantasy right now.

First up was The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre. It was a dark, angst-filled read. I really liked it, but I needed a break after I finished it. So I Married a Sorcerer by Kerrelyn Sparks was good. It was my first book by her. I plan to go back and check out her others. Gaslight Hades, a Steampunk novella by Grace Draven, was also dark and filled with angst. I’m really sad there aren’t more books available in the series. Born in Fire and Raised in Fire by K.F. Breene were both good. The series is pretty light – there’s a lot of humor and it borders on being campy – but I like it. I’m going to start Fused in Fire next.

I also re-read Down London Road, One King’s Way and Castle Hill by Samantha Young.

Rowena: I took the week off last week because I was in Vegas on my last family vacation and man did I not want to come home. Spending the day lazing by the pool, eating all of the food then laughing it up with my family was a good time. Now, I’m back and I’m reading Gentlemen Prefer Heiresses by Lorraine Heath. This week, I read Arm Candy by Jessica Lemmon and Links by Lisa Becker.

What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!

I read and loved Scandalous Ever After by Theresa Romain at the beginning of the week. Since then I’ve been trying to read Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch. I’m enjoying it, but it’s slow-going. I’m enjoying it, but I was having trouble concentrating on it then I got sick and I’ve basically been sleeping the past three days. I’m hoping to finish it tonight. I’m at 82% and it ends at 96% so that should be doable. Then I Kimberly Kincaid’s new one that I won in a Goodreads giveaway, plus the upcoming books from Sherry Thomas and Juliana Gray from Penguin First to Read so they’ll be up soon. I also need to finish In a Dark, Dark Wood that I started and abandoned because I wasn’t in the mood for anything other than something light and fluffy. It’s due at the library in a few days. I need to get my reading mojo back.

Yay, I’m so glad you liked So I Married a Sorcerer, Holly! I read that one this week too and thought it was really good. It’s better than the first book in the series, which was interesting but a little inconsistent.

I had a good reading week, probably the last one before the new semester insanity descends (sob). I read This Wicked Magic, which is a Harlequin Nocturne I picked up on a total whim. It was enjoyable and kind of different than the usual fare, but it didn’t knock my socks off either. I also read Alpha One by Cynthia Eden which I somehow never read before. And then I read Highlander Most Wanted by Maya Banks. I LOVE book 1 of that series (Never Seduce a Scot), like really really love it an irrational amount given that objectively the book is not that special. I hadn’t ever read book 2 in the series, though. It was also excellent and I basically spent at least 70% of the book crying because the heroine truly had an awful situation. And then I learned Banks never finished book 3 of the series (though it’s listed as still coming in the future?) and that made me grumpy and unfulfilled so I decided to try another Scottish romance. I hunted down the Lyndsay Sands book Holly told me about, Devil of the Highlands. (Holly, you were right it’s campy but it mostly worked for me.)

And one more comment since we can’t post long comments any more. I also read two more of the Psy Changeling series (7 and 8) and now I am scheming how I can possibly squeeze in more reading before school and work starts again, because things are getting so exciting! Speaking of crying through books, I hardcore sobbed while reading Blaze of Memory, like big wracking sobs that made me put down the book for a few minutes. Haha, I am totally invested in this world now. I knew I would be, but I also knew it would be impossible to put down, and indeed it is. 🙂

      • The comment issue *should* be fixed now!

Ugh, don’t even get me started on that Maya Banks series. I read those as they were released. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ALREADY! Aaaaahhhhhh.

I figured you’d like the Sands. Some of her historicals really worked for me and some were just too much.

I’m away from home as, I’m sorry to say, my mother broke her hip. I’ve been doing some reading but not as much as usual. I’ll likely post in the next What are you reading post. Happy reading all.
