What Are You Reading? (314)

WAYR-New

Casee:I’m reading Power Game by Christine Feehan. I’m about halfway through it and really enjoying it so far. I’m also rereading the In Death series and am falling in love with Eve and Roarke all over again.

So far this year has been kind to me.

Holly: My youngest brought home a cold this week, and we’ve both been laid low by it. I hate being sick, but at least I got some reading time in. I did some re-reading. The Gamble, Mystery Man and Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley, and One Fell Sweep by Ilona Andrews. I also read Playing the Player by Amy Andrews. It was a cute contemporary romance, but I though the final conflict was a little contrived. Right now I’m reading Malsum Pass by Kimberley Forrest, which I picked up after seeing Tracy’s review of it. I’m about 40 pages in and so far so good.

Rowena: With all of the rain that we’ve been getting here in Southern California, I’ve really picked up my reading game and that makes me happy. I read Satisfaction by Lexi Blake, which was an enjoyable contemporary romance. I really liked the way that Bran went about getting things done in this book as opposed to his bonehead brother Riley in the last book. Bran was a breath of fresh air and I absolutely adored him. After that, I read Nine Rules to Break when Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean because that’s my book club discussion book and book club is on Monday. It was just as wonderful as it was the first time that I read it. <3

Next up, I read Sustained by Emma Chase again for the Totally Doable Challenge that I’m participating in this year and it was my favorite freaking read of the week. I cried, I laughed and I fell in love with Jake Becker and the McQuaid family all over again. I loved them so much that I re-read Sidebarred, too. Oh man, I have so much love for all of those characters. So much love. Next up, I read Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis and while the story was solid, the characters got on my hot damn nerves throughout too much of the story for me to give it anything more than a 3.

Now, I’m reading Seven Minutes in Heaven by Eloisa James. I’m about a third of the way into the book and I’m enjoying it. Can’t say much about the story yet but it’s going good so far. After this, I’m going to read Fury on Fire by Sophie Jordan and get to know North because I’ve been mighty curious about him since book 1 (his book is book 3). Wish me luck! 🙂

What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!

Rowena- I loved Sustained! It was my first, and probably still my favorite, Emma Chase book.

I read The Rule Book and The Rule Maker by Jennifer Blackwood. I enjoyed both; they both had great humor and dialogue. After that I struggled. Nothing sounded good and I ended up trying The Debutante is Mine by Vivienne Lorret since I needed to read one of my Overdrive books to free up a slot for a book I had on hold. I got about halfway through and gave up. It was okay, but I wasn’t getting into it which may have been more about me being in a slight slump than the book itself. I started Heartless by Marissa Meyer and it was fine, but I wasn’t in the mood for it so I put it down for now. Now I’m trying Someone Like You by Lauren Layne. I’ve been reading it for two days and I’m only 25% in. I’m really liking it, but having a hard time concentrating on reading. Hopefully next week will be better!

I’ve been away from home for a few weeks helping my mother move to an assisted living place. Books read since late December include ~

    — Mariana Zapata’s newest contemporary romance Wait for It which I enjoyed at the time. I realize now though that I recall next to none of it perhaps due to distraction. I’ll doubtless re-read it at some point.
    — a re-read of Thea Harrison’s A Dragon’s Family Album: A Collection of the Elder Races
    — Lisa Marie Rice’s romantic suspense Midnight Secrets (Men of Midnight Book 3) which I also enjoyed.
    — a re-read of The Search by Nora Roberts
    — Anna Richland’s paranormal romance First to Burn (Immortal Vikings Book 1) which was a fun read and a re-read of her spin-off contemporary romance novella (NOT paranormal) which numbers amongst my favorites: His Road Home
    — the romantic suspense Flash of Fire (Firehawks Book 4) by M. L. Buchman which I enjoyed (but not as much as some of his other books)
    — For my sister’s book group, Our Souls at Night: A novel by Kent Haruf. It was a quick but meaty read and the author’s last book written before his death from cancer.
    — the inspirational historical romance From This Moment by Elizabeth Camden. I enjoyed it and did not find it too preachy (though the characters were a little too harsh on themselves from time to time). I learned some interesting historical tidbits such as the fact that the first subway system in the US opened in 1897 in Boston and that it was the first electrical subway system in the world. The first subway systems (steam run) were in London, Glasgow and Budapest.
    — two male/male romances by Kim Fielding were re-reads Motel. Pool. plus Rattlesnake. I also read for the first time her Brute.
    — Please Look After Mom by Kyung-Sook Shin which I read for my book group. It was a poignant read about an older woman who goes missing in a Seoul subway station when she and her husband are separated as he steps on a train without her.
    — the contemporary romance Hard Hitter (A Brooklyn Bruisers Novel) by Sarina Bowen which I enjoyed. Others of her books remain my favorites though.
    — Bedmates: An American Royalty Novel by Nichole Chase which was a pleasant read, but it’s probably not a book I’ll reread.
    — Ann Aguirre’s paranormal romance The Leopard King (Ars Numina Book 1) which I enjoyed with some reservations. I’ll definitely continue on with subsequent books in the series, but there were aspects of the book that I found jarring. The reader is informed that humans exist in this world, but that they’re distant (due to a treaty?). IEDs are jarring but reasonable (trading?). The use of cell phones however would seem to indicate a need for cell towers ….
    — Him also Us by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy; Him was a re-read, Us I read for the first time. Both are male/male new adult romances. I enjoyed them both.

Happy New Year to you all and happy 10th birthday to Book Binge.
