What Are You Reading? (281)

WAYR-New

Holly: I didn’t have much reading time this week. I read On the Edge by Ilona Andrews. I was in the mood for more UF after finishing the Kate Daniels series and figured I’d try it. It was just okay. Not as great as I’d hoping it’d be. I also read Troublemaker by Linda Howard. You guys, I was low key nervous going into it, but I ended up really liking it. It had Howard’s trademark humor and the sexual chemistry was there, too. It was kind of slow to start, but I really ended up enjoying it.

I may try to read another Ilona Andrews novel today, or I may look for a paranormal. I’m undecided.

Rowena: I haven’t been reading much this week. I finished up Branded by Fire (and really enjoyed it) by Nalini Singh and am now reading Blaze of Memory and while it’s interesting, I’m not as invested in Dev and Katya as I was with the other couples in previous books. Maybe I’m more of a Changeling girl instead of a Psy? I have no idea. After this, I’m going to do a quick re-read of Own the Wind by Kristen Ashley for my book club meeting on Monday and then after that, I’m going to jump right back into the Psy-Changeling series and start Bonds of Justice. I’m on a mission after all.

What are you reading this week? Any new favorites or books that drove you crazy? Share!

I had time to read a book, hooray! I read Simon Says Die, an old romantic suspense from Lena Diaz. I enjoyed it–some good twists and turns.

  2. I finished Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, by Helen Fielding, and while it was enjoyable at times (I loved Roxster, despite his ridiculous name) I wasn’t mad about it.

Now I’m reading my first Linda Lael Miller, Once a Rancher, and I’m really liking it. Good thing too, because I have 25 of her other books in my TBR!

Not reading much this weekend as I’m on a mini break with some family and friends, but for the first time ever I did not toss four or five books in my suitcase. That’s because we are visiting the flagship Half Price Books store in Dallas tomorrow, and in very excited!

I recently read Ilona Andrews’ On the Edge and the three subsequent books. I liked the first and fourth books best; the second and third had some aspects that I found icky. (Don’t you like that scientific term?) Holly, have you read Written in Red: A Novel of the Others by Anne Bishop? I’ll suggest that as a paranormal series you might enjoy.

    Books read this week include:

    — Anne Bishop’s Marked In Flesh: A Novel of the Others. This is the fourth book in the series; a little research determined that a fifth book is anticipated.
    — Rock N Soul by Lauren Sattersby. It has a bit of everything — life, death, growth, seeking forgiveness, and humor. It was a rare read in that it had me wondering how the situation would resolve itself for the main characters; it’s quite likely a book that I’ll re-read at some point. The two leads are bi-sexual men.
    — a re-read Ilona Andrew’s Steel’s Edge which is the fourth and final book in The Edge series.
    — The Strongest Steel which is a contemporary romance by Scarlett Cole. It was an enjoyable read but not a book I’m likely to revisit.
    — a re-read of a book that I recently won HERE ~ Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson. Thank you, again.
    — the short romance Signing Bonus (Chicago Series Book 3) by Elizabeth Marx. This was a pleasant read, but it didn’t have the same oomph (how’s that for another quantifiable characteristic?) as some of the author’s other books. I’m unlikely to re-read this.
    — re-read of the novella His Road Home by Anna Richland.

    — currently reading Anne Bishop’s Heir to the Shadows
    — also midway through Tamara Allen’s The Road to Silver Plume which is a male/male historical romance set in the latter 1800s in the US.

    • It’s amazing that I think I know all authors and all books but every week, I never know any of the books you read, Kareni. I thought I was cool. Haha.

It was a lot easier 25 years ago to know all the authors and all the books; now the amount of new books is simply staggering! I learn about a lot of new books on your site as well as on several others.

    • What kind of things happen in books 2 and 3 that made you uncomfortable? I don’t mind spoilers and I’d like to know before I decide to move on. If you don’t want to listart them here, will you email me?

There is a lot of genetic manipulation of characters in those two books, Holly — think individuals that have a lot of both plant and animal traits. It doesn’t sound too bad when I write it out here, but it’s to the credit of the authors that on the page those characters are quite repellent! Perhaps I have a weak stomach.

        • I see. It isn’t something the characters do, such as poor behavior, that you consider “icky”, but rather what they are. I can deal with that. I thought you meant there was squicky behavior going on.
