What Are You Reading? (245)

WAYR-New

Holly: This week was definitely slower for me in terms of reading. I’ve been running like crazy doing end-of-school-year stuff that I’ve hardly had time to think, much less read. I did get a few re-reads in, but I’m hopeful after next weeks my long lazy summer can start and my reading will skyrocket.

For new reads, I finished Evangeline Anderson’s Born to Darkness series. Crimson Debt, Book 1, was a free download. I had a lot of problems with the story, but I was just curious enough about the next couple to buy the 2nd book, Scarlet Heat, then the 3rd, Ruby Shadows. Of the three, Scarlet Heat is my favorite, but all three were seriously flawed. I’ve read about 5 books in Anderson’s Brides of the Kindred series and, while her stories are interesting, I believe she’d benefit from the services of a really good editor. Still, I’ll probably read the next Born to Darkness book when it’s released.

Otherwise I did some re-reading. Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley, because I was talking about it with a friend. Moonlight on Nightingale Way by Samantha Young to refresh my memory so Rowena and I can jointly review it. Shards of Hope by Nalini Singh, which is 100% Azteclady’s fault for writing such an excellent review.

Rowena: It’s been a slow going reading week for me. The only book that I read this week was The Duke & the Lady in Red by Lorraine Heath. It was a great historical romance that made me tear up, oh who am I kidding? I cried myself silly while reading this book. It took me a bit to get through this one because I wasn’t really in the mood for a historical romance but I read it anyway and am glad that I did. Oh no, wait. I did a re-read of Before Jamaica Lane by Samantha Young because Ames read it and really enjoyed it but I couldn’t remember a thing about it so I read it again so I can discuss it with her. LOVE NATE AND OLIVIA!

Right now, I’m reading Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway. A contemporary YA book about two best friends and the changes that come in their lives when one of them was kidnapped as a kid and has now returned home – ten years later. So far, it’s pretty good so I’ll see where it lands on my enjoyment scale when I finish it.

  1. I started out the week reading The Winter Family by Clifford Jackman, but I really struggled to get into it. There are so many characters right off the bat, I couldn’t always keep them straight. And then even when I did settle in, it just sort of dragged. So one day when I just didn’t want to open the book, I went to NetGalley and got Midsummer Dreams by Alison May. Fewer characters, but with the narrative bouncing around between the four main friends. It’s enjoyable enough, but not anything special. I’m only at the 31% mark, I think I’ve been spending more time watching Netflix and my DVR this week than I have reading.

    • I know what you mean. I’ve been spending more time with Netflix and DVR these days too. I need that urge to go away so that I can get back to some decent reading. I hope things pick up for you too. 🙂

I’m currently in the midst of reading the anthology Way of the Warrior by Suzanne Brockmann, Julie Ann Walker, Catherine Mann and Tina Wainscott and others. I’ve enjoyed all of the stories I’ve read thus far (albeit some more than others).

Recent reads include Loretta Chase’s Lord of Scoundrels (a re-read), Playing Dirty: Bad Boys Undercover by HelenKay Dimon, and This Gun for Hire by Jo Goodman.

    • Holly, I have good news! A commenter on Nalini’s blog was able to quote an explanation for the teleport lock issue–I edited my review to include the comment. I’m so happy there is no world-building continuity break!

I have an awesome summer book recommendation if you are looking for suspense and romance! I just read “The Friend Request” by author Charles Soto and I could not put it down. It is a Facebook love story about two high school sweethearts who reconnect later in life to find that they both now live in two totally different worlds. Chase is a ultra rich business owner dealing with some scandalous family issues and Carly is a struggling single mom desperately trying to care for her disabled son. I absolutely loved the characters and found this to be an entertaining and addictive book! I am sure I will be re-reading it again on the beach!! Hope you check it out
