Rowena’s review of Midnight Games (Killer Instincts #3) by Elle Kennedy.

She wears a thousand deadly identities. He sees through them all.

A master of disguise, Isabel Roma spends her life pretending to be other women. Normally, her emotions are reined in tight—but sexy mercenary Trevor Callaghan has a knack for getting under her skin. The elite operative’s quiet strength and raw magnetism affect her in ways she’s never felt before, a distraction that can quickly turn deadly in their dangerous line of work.

After putting his tragic past behind him, Trevor is ready to focus on his future—and he damn well intends for Isabel to be in it. When their entire operation is thrown into chaos, Trevor enlists Isabel’s talent for deception. And as they attempt to save their team in a world where the stakes are high and the danger is grave, Trevor must convince Isabel that the woman beneath all the disguises is the one worth having…

Finally!

Trevor and Isabel’s book. I have been looking forward to this book since Trevor and Isabel first showed up in this series, in Book 1. Trevor and Isabel went undercover as married couple Julian and Paloma Martin and together, they took down Luis Blanco. When we last saw them, Trevor wanted to see where the chemistry that was sizzling between them would go and Isabel fled…leaving Trevor in the dust.

It’s almost six months later and Trevor and Isabel are thrown together again when Isabel comes to town to see her friend Abby, who is married to one of Trevor’s friends and co-workers. Before they can really talk about what happened, where Isabel went, the compound that Trevor lives at goes under attack and the book really takes off.

Holy cow, this book! From the jump, the book was just non-stop action. The suspense nearly killed me as there is so much of it in here. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough because I wanted to know where Jim was, who attacked the compound, what’s going on with Isabel and Trevor. There’s so much going on but it’s not the kind of jammed packed where story lines and characters suffer from not being fleshed out. Kennedy did a fantastic job of including multiple story lines without overwhelming the reader and I appreciated her efforts.

Trevor has come a long way since the first time we met him and I couldn’t get over how much I loved him in this book. He was so steadfast in his feelings for Isabel and in showing her that he was serious about her and my heart skipped a beat every time he did anything really. Trevor is my favorite hero in the series so far (and I already read Jim’s book) so that’s saying something because all of the heroes in this series just do it for me. They’re all great but there’s something about Trevor that makes me love him more. I loved that he loved Isabel without forgetting Gina. I loved how hard he tried to make Isabel see that. I just flat out loved him.

Isabel was a complex heroine. She had issues that made it hard for her to stick with relationships. Her family did a real number on her and I don’t know if I would have had the patience that Trevor showed toward Isabel. There were times in the book where I wanted to smack some sense into her, to keep her from running away yet again but it all ended the way that it was supposed to be so I was glad for that. Isabel was a great friend to the family she made with her co-workers and when she wasn’t running away or denying her feelings for Trevor, I liked her. I really liked all of her disguises and how she kept surprising the guys with how easily she slipped into different personas. My favorite of her personas was Paloma Martin though. Ha!

The suspense in this book carries through seamlessly and I was surprised when the big reveal happened. I don’t know what I was expecting but I wasn’t expecting that. There were plenty of times while reading this book when I said (out loud, mind you), “PLOT TWIST!” Haha. This book was good. It was everything that I hoped it would be and it was exactly the story that I was expecting for Trevor and Isabel. I’m completely addicted to this series and I’m glad that I didn’t have to wait twenty books before getting Trevor’s story. I’m mighty curious about the IT guy now. I’m wondering if he’s going to get a book.

This book was a damn good story and I’m so glad that I read it. I definitely recommend.
