What Are You Reading?

Holly: I’m still feeling pretty meh about reading. I want to read, but nothing is catching my attention. When I start a book, it takes twice as long as normal to finish it. It’s frustrating.

This week I read Bear Attraction by Jennifer Ashley,  which prompted a reread of Tiger Magic (my favorite of the series). I also reread Ransom by Julie Garwood and Fall Into Me by Linda Winfree. That’s it. Hopefully I’ll get my reading mojo back this week.

Rowena:  This week was an okay reading week for me. I read Perfect Couple by Jennifer Echols which I really enjoyed. It was cute and fun and I’m pretty stoked to get the next book in the series read. Next, I read More than This by Jay McLean and that one started out great and then kind of fell off for me. The hero and the heroine drove me crazy. They didn’t get their crap together until damn near the last page. Ugh.

Now, I’m reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It’s my book club pick of the month and our meeting is in the next couple of weeks so I have to read it and prepare a discussion for it. So far, I’m really enjoying it. I like Jojo Moyes’ writing and I’m really liking both Will (even though he’s still mean) and Lou. They’re interesting characters.

Reading Goals: 2015

Reading+Challenges

Holly: I never used to set reading goals/challenges for myself, because I would always end up with reading anxiety when I did. “I’m supposed to read 100 books this year and it’s December and I’ve only read 75!?!?!” Then I’d get so freaked out I’d give myself readers-block (it’s a real thing!) and not be able to read at all.

The last few years I’ve done a number challenge (211, 200, 200, etc), and did pretty well with it. I didn’t freak myself out because I just considered it a way to track my reads, which I’ve been doing for years now. This year, however, I’m going to set a few reading goals. I want to broaden my reading horizons, and get out of my comfort zone more.

In an effort to do that, I plan to continue to read new-to-me authors. I read 48 new authors in 2013 and 46 in 2014. That averages out to about 4 per month. Not terrible, but when you consider I average approximately 20 books per month, I feel like I could be doing better. I’m also going to try to branch out and read things beside contemporary romance. I read 136 contemps in 2014, and less than half that many paranormals. The numbers of historical, rom-suspense and other sub-genres was negligible. I also joined a reading challenge to help me cull down my TBR pile and motivate me to read outside my comfort zone. I found this challenge on Pinterest. Rowena has agreed to do it with me. (I ‘m also considering this challenge, also found on Pinterest. I haven’t decided if I’ll do one or both.)

2015 reading challenge

To summarize, or the TL;DR version:

1. Read more sub-genres
2. Read more new authors
3. Finish the 2015 Reading Challenge

Rowena: 2015 was going to be the year that I take a break from reading challenges. It was going to be the year that I read whatever I want, whenever I want and not be bogged down with review books and whatever else but I can’t help myself. I like reading challenges. They’re good for variety because like Holly, I read a lot of contemporary books so the goals I’m setting are to get me out of my comfort zone and try new to me things. I won’t know if I like something until I try it, right?

I have a tendency to stick to what I know and what has worked with me. So if a new to me author is popular, I won’t try them out until someone I know personally recommends them. And even then, it might take me years. Haha.

I belong to a book club that meets once a month to discuss books and last year, there were a few times that I didn’t read the book and couldn’t participate in the discussion. That ends this year. I will read and discuss every single book that we choose to read as a club.

So aside from the 2015 reading challenge with Holly, my reading goals are:

  1. Read more new to me authors
  2. Read more sub-genres
  3. Read all of my book club picks
  4. Read more for me and not anyone else

Did you join any challenges in 2015? What are your reading goals?

Evan Downey needs a new beginning. Since the death of his wife five years ago, the brilliant tattoo artist has shut himself away in a prison of grief that not even his work can break him out of-and what's worse, Evan knows his son Lyon is bearing the brunt of his seclusion. Moving back to the lake town of Evergreen Cove where he spent his childhood summers is his last chance for a fresh start.

Charlotte Harris knows she owes it to her best friend's memory to help Evan and his son find their way again, but she can't stop her traitorous heart from skipping a beat every time she looks into Evan's mesmerizing eyes. Charlotte is determined to stay strictly in the Friend Zone-until a mind-blowing night knocks that plan by the wayside. Now, if they're brave enough to let it, Charlotte and Evan might just find a love capable of healing their broken hearts . . .

Tracy’s review of Bringing Home the Bad Boy (Second Chance #1) by Jessica Lemmon

Evan and his young son, Lyon, are moving to Evergreen Cove, a place that he spent most of his summers growing up. He needs to get out of the house that he lived in with his wife, Rae, as he sees her death every time he walks down the hall – as that’s where she died in his arms.

Charlie was Rae’s best friend. She had a crush on Evan when she was younger but Evan only had eyes for Rae. Now they’re friends. Charlie and her ex-boyfriend once hung out with Evan and Rae as couples and the pair get along fine.

When Evan sees a beautiful woman in a bikini laying out of the dock at the lake he’s anxious to go get to know her further. He’s shocked when he finds out that it’s Charlie but realizes that that instance provided him a view of Charlie he’d never had before. He starts trying to get closer to her but as much as Charlie longs for Evan and she loves Lyon to death, she can’t get over the feeling that she’s betraying Rae by starting something with her husband.

This was a really great story. I loved the ins and outs of Charlie and Evan’s relationship even though I thought at times that Charlie was fighting it all too hard. I still understood what she was going through as I feel that I would have some of the same issues as she did if I were in her shoes.

Evan was…hot. Everything about him was gorgeous. He was beautiful from head to toe and inside and out. He loved his wife dearly and would have liked nothing more than to have her alive and well but he knew that would never happen. He was also not blind to the fact that he and his wife didn’t have a perfect relationship. They had their issues and even though people tend to remember only the good about someone once they’ve died he wasn’t blind to their problems. He had survived 5 years without his wife and he was ready to start living again. He was still haunted by his own demons but for the most part he was a pretty great guy all the way around. I loved him and his son together and the fact that he didn’t let things slide with Lyon’s upbringing as he so easily could have – just from guilt alone.

Charlie took a little longer for me to warm up to. I thought she was overly dramatic at times but as I said, I understood where she was coming from. I would have liked to have seen her stand up to her ex (who was a complete douche) when he confronted her. He was such an ass and I wanted her to be strong in his presence. Unfortunately that didn’t happen but it would have been great to see. 🙂

While it had its issues I found the book to be an overall good one. I’m looking forward to see what happens next with the secondary characters we met in this book.
