Tell us about Breakable.

Breakable is a companion novel to Easy. Both a prequel of Lucas’s life before Jacqueline (when he was Landon), and the story of Easy from his perspective, Breakable was written for readers who craved more about Lucas when they finished reading Easy.

What prompted you to write Landon’s story?

Lucas didn’t “speak” to me when I was writing Easy. I saw him from Jacqueline’s point of view only – and that was fine with me. I wanted Easy to be her story, and having him remain so silent made it easier for me to keep it exactly as I intended. It wasn’t until around a year after I first published Easy when Lucas finally began telling me his story. Once I started seeing bits and pieces of it, I had to write it.

Was it difficult writing overlapping timelines?

Technically speaking, this was the most difficult writing project I’ve ever tackled. The overlapping timelines were a challenge to manage, but writing Lucas’s view of the Easy story inside one of those timelines drove me to drink (that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!). Readers may think it’s easier to rewrite a story into a different perspective than it is to craft an entirely new story, but that’s just not so. (This was true for me, and for several other authors I know who’ve done it – all of us have vowed to never do it again.) The story can’t be altered. The dialogue inside scenes can’t be altered. I made up for this as much as possible by writing “outside the lines” – including scenes that were only alluded to in Easy and beefing up scenes that faded into black in Jacqueline’s perspective.

What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

The moment I struggle to sit up, I’m love-attacked by my cat, Moose, who acts as if my being asleep for a little while was tantamount to having left home for a week. My wonderful husband brings me coffee in bed and saves any complex questions or bad news until I’ve downed at least one cup. I’m a slow-waking sort of girl.

You’re stuck on a deserted island. What 5 things do you wish for?

(Having seen Castaway, watched Lost religiously and read Tracey Garvis Graves’ On the Island, I would be utterly terrified to actually have this happen. I would die SO FAST.) I’d wish for fresh water, my glasses, my inhaler, my husband and a cell phone with miraculous service and just enough battery power to get me rescued asap! If I have all that… I would want a box of my favorite romance novels, a crate of some decent Pinot Grigio, a hammock, a fruit tree, and lots of sunscreen to protect my ungodly pale, I-don’t-tan-I-burn skin.

Breakable lo res

A Contours of the Heart Novel

As a child, Landon Lucas Maxfield believed his life was perfect and looked forward to a future filled with promise—until tragedy tore his family apart and made him doubt everything he ever believed. All he wanted was to leave the past behind. When he met Jacqueline Wallace, his desire to be everything she needed came so easy…As easy as it could be for a man who learned that the soul is breakable and that everything you hoped for could be ripped away in a heartbeat.

For the longest time after I started watching Survivor, I carried around a box of matches in my purse, just in case I somehow got marooned on a desert island with only my purse LOL.

I really enjoyed Easy and loved Lucas so I’m looking forward to reading his story.
