Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.

Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.

Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael’s Tower under siege by enemy archangels.

Yet even as they fight desperately to save the city, an even darker force is stirring, its chill eyes trained on New York…and on Raphael. Rivers of crimson and nightmares given flesh, the world will never again be the same…

I’m not even sure that a review of AL could possibly tell you the utter love I have for this book. I have adored Raphael and Elena’s relationship since book 1 and that hasn’t changed. The glimpses that we’ve seen of them over the course of the series haven’t been enough so when I heard they were back to being center stage for AL I was extremely excited. Singh didn’t disappoint me (she never does) with this wonderful story.

Elena and Raphael are working together to find out who’s behind the horrible events that lead to angels falling from the sky and vampires dying (which they just don’t do!) and they’re incredibly frustrated with not knowing. People they care about have been hurt and the entire population of New York is in danger of dying if the couple doesn’t get the knowledge they need and find a way to stop a war.

During the course of the book we see Raphael and Elena becoming friends with Archangel Elijah and his consort as well as going to a ball that is held by Raphael’s mother. During this time both Elena and Raphael are dealing with odd happenings. Elena with increased nightmares having to do with the death of her mother and sisters and Raphael with strange dreams that take place in the field where he laid broken when he was a child. Raphael is also attempting to deal with a power that tries to take over his body but trying to assimilate it makes him a cold, unfeeling person, which neither he nor Elena want.

Elena and Raphael’s love is never in question and though they have their trials they just prove to make them stronger together then they ever would be apart. The ups and downs of a normal relationship are there but also the enemies that try to drive them apart test them daily – and the love always wins.

The whole story is about family, love, loyalty, strength and war but it’s all so interwoven that you can’t have one without the other. Singh has written a book that grabs your attention and your heart and doesn’t let it go until the last page has been read. This is a story that just needs to be read in order to grasp the wonder of it all. It’s so damned good you won’t want to put it down.
