Author Interview (+ a Giveaway): Nalini Singh

Posted May 27, 2013 by Holly in Giveaways, Promotions | 46 Comments

Today we have a treat for you. Bestselling author Nalini Singh recently agreed to answer some questions for us about her upcoming release, Heart of Obsidian, and what she has in store for us in the future.

There’s been a lot of speculation about who the hero and heroine of Heart of Obsidian will be. It was kept pretty tightly under wraps, but Nalini posted the first two chapters on her website (Caution: Do not click if you don’t want to be spoiled), revealing the hero. The heroine is still a mystery.

Step into New York Times bestseller Nalini Singh’s explosive and shockingly passionate Psy-Changeling world…

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained bloodred.

A woman whose very existence has been erased.

A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.

A deadly price that must be paid.

The day of reckoning is here.

From “the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) comes the most highly anticipated novel of her career–one that blurs the line between madness and genius, between subjugation and liberation, between the living and the dead.

Can you give us a small hint about what to expect from Heart of Obsidian?

There’s a two chapter excerpt now up, which gives you the start of the book. A lot of things happen in Heart of Obsidian, and those events will reverberate through the Psy-Changeling world for some time to come. It’s not a book readers of the series should miss!

What can you tell us about The Ghost?

By the time this interview goes live, the Ghost will have done a Twitter chat! So check out that transcript here. (Warning: Spoilers!!)

What would you say was the most challenging thing about writing this particular book?

The continuity details; but that’s been a challenge for all the later books in the series. Continuity is very important to me – I want all the puzzle pieces to fit together logically from book to book.

Does this book complete the Psy/Changeling arc you originally planned when you started the series? If not, how many more are in the original arc?

No, there are at least two more books to go in this arc. It might be three if two books isn’t enough to tie everything up as I want to do, but I won’t know that until I sit down to write. I know the story – it just depends how long it takes to tell it.

I am still contracted up to book #14. 

Switching gears for a minute, what do you have planned for the Guild Hunter series? Will each of the Seven get a book?

The next book, Archangel’s Legion, is about Elena and Raphael, but you also get to see a lot of Illium, Aodhan, and Naasir. As for which of the Seven will get their own book – I would love to write about all of them, but I’m always very conscious of doing justice to the characters. I want the story to be the right one for them. Since I only completed Archangel’s Legion recently, I’m giving myself some time to think things over, and haven’t yet made a firm decision as to the protagonists of the next book.

Will you go back to Elena and Raphael again after this?

I think we’ll return to Elena and Raphael again in the series – they’re central players in the events set in motion in Archangel’s Legion. However, I definitely do want to explore many of the other characters more deeply too, and I love that the series allows me to do both.

Each series is so different, yet so well balanced. Do you find it hard to jump between the two worlds?

No, I don’t. I think it’s because they’re so different – there’s really no overlap. The writing, the tone, the characters, they’re all very distinct.

What’s an average day like in the life of Nalini Singh?

There is no average day! Usually, I try to do all e-mails, blogging etc in the morning, and write in the afternoons/evenings, but that can change depending on what I need to do workwise. If I have edits due within a short timeframe, for example, I pretty much work morning to night until they’re complete.

Just for fun: What book, author or series are you currently loving?

I just finished reading an advanced copy of Meljean Brook’s “Guardian Demon”, which is a story I’ve been waiting for since the first book in her Guardians series. It was awesome! I also love Meljean’s Iron Seas steampunk series. I think she’s a brilliant, innovative builder of worlds that I love to get explore.

What do you have in store for us next?

After Heart of Obsidian, it’ll be Archangel’s Legion in October! However, I’ll also be sending out short stories as usual through my newsletter, which is free for anyone to join, so there’ll be lots of little goodies in between the two books!

I’m currently reading the series for the first time. I’ve only read Kiss of Snow, Tangle of Need, and am about a third of the way through Slave to Sensation (having finally decided to quit being silly and read the rest of the series in order). So far I think Slave to Sensation may be my favorite, but I reserve the right to change to mind once I’ve finished the series.

I haven’t gotten too far in the series yet, but I really enjoyed Visions of Heat.

  3. One favorite? It’s very hard to choose. I’m still very partial to Caressed by Ice, because I love that Judd doesn’t morph into an unrecognizable warm, fuzzy character–but you see this throughout the series, not just his book.

Kiss of Snow, because Hawke–and Walker and Lara 😀

I think it’s easier for me to say which one is the least favorite! (and even then…)

I have a hard time picking a favorite in this series. I think they’re all consistently good. I like how they truly build and move the whole storyline forward.

How can I pic one favourite?! This series is awesome, and pretty much every entry is amazing. I truely can’t pick one. 🙂

I haven’t read this series yet, but I keep hearing it mentioned on different blogs.

  7. On re-reading the books… “Branded by Fire”. I really like Riley, and I loved reading about him and Mercy.

My favorite book so far is Kiss of Snow. I was giddy at finally seeing Sienna and Hawke together.

  10. I haven’t read any of the books in this series. They all sound great. Definately will be going on my ever growing TBR pile.

  11. Tracy Lynn

“Kiss of Snow” is definitely my favorite. I just loved how Sienna drove Hawke crazy throughout the series. 🙂

  12. So hard to pick just one series favorite, but I still have to go with Judd and Brenna, Caressed by Ice, with Slave to Sensation a close second. thanks Nalini, for such a fantastic series.

  13. I don’t have a favorite, but I think I have a slight preference for the Psy/Changeling mixed couple stories over all changeling stories.

Ooh, that’s a tough one… I love them all! But I’d probably have to go with Slave to Sensation.

  15. I’d have to say Slave to Sensation. Great book and series. Congrats on the new release. Can’t wait to read it.

  16. I liked Branded by Fire the most, though my favorite favorite character is still HAWKE!!!!! I just didn’t really like Sienna the first time I read Kiss of Snow, but maybe I’ll try again! Can’t, can’t wait for Heart of Obsidian!!

  20. I guess I’d have to choose Slave to Sensation, but only because it was the introduction to a world I love. All of the books in the series are great!

Oh, I seriously can’t choose which one is my favorite. This is the only series I can say that about, and that tells something, doesn’t it? I just love ’em all!

  23. My favourite Psy/changelling book has got to be Slave to Sensation! Lucas and Sasha are the best – I love it whenever they make a cameo in the other novels. (Also, totally want Kit to get his own book!)
